Jimmy glanced at the road. Many people in Jersey City commute to Manhattan, so the traffic is much lighter during the day, with not too many cars on the road. When the car behind him pulled up alongside, he turned his head for a look, regretting that Heart Eye couldn't observe through the reflection of the mirror; otherwise, he could have made an earlier assessment.
The window on the right side of the car was already open, with someone in the passenger seat holding something, and a person in the backseat had already raised a hand out the window, a handgun in their grip.
Jimmy stepped on the brakes, gripping the steering wheel tightly to keep the car from losing control. The emergency braking caused the other vehicle to quickly move from Jimmy's left to in front of him, and the rear passenger's shot missed. By the time he turned to look back at Jimmy through the window, Jimmy had already switched on his siren and lights, restarted, and caught up in pursuit. The roles of hunter and prey had changed, but regrettably, the ramming bar he was supposed to have installed hadn't been fitted yet; otherwise, they would've definitely experienced what a PIT maneuver was like.
Jimmy sped up and followed closely behind the car, taking out his revolver with his right hand. When he got close, he fired a shot through the windshield, aiming for the rear seat where the person who had just fired from the back right was sitting. However, since the car was constantly moving, Jimmy's aim at the head was slightly off, probably hitting the chest area instead.
There were four people in the car, and at this point, Jimmy couldn't hesitate; it was better to err on the side of caution and eliminate their threat as soon as possible.
The people in the car ahead poked their heads and arms out the windows to shoot at Jimmy, forcing him to swerve left and right to try to dodge the bullets. Fortunately, shooting from a moving vehicle wasn't something everyone had practiced, and their marksmanship was quite poor.
Jimmy placed the revolver on the console and drew his Glock from his waist, needing the greater ammunition capacity for suppression. He had no intention of conserving ammo and just aimed for the human shapes in his line of sight, firing away. Despite the vehicle's movement and bumps causing most shots to miss their intended targets, he still managed to injure the person in the back.
The driver in front seemed to either have been shot or was just nervous, as the car began to sway heavily, clearly struggling to control the vehicle. Watching his own car, Jimmy gritted his teeth and resisted the urge to perform a PIT maneuver, knowing that without a ramming bar, a Victoria Crown's front bumper would definitely collapse after one attempt, sending it straight back to the repair shop.
As the car chase intensified with a gunfight, it was certain that some bystanders had called 911. After Jimmy chased them for two blocks and swapped for a spare magazine, a police car came rushing from behind, quickly reaching his rear.
Jimmy didn't give up the lead position; the people in the car ahead were armed, and if ordinary police came forward and things went south, it would get messy.
Jimmy kept an eye on the car ahead, and soon enough an accident occurred. As they approached an intersection, the car ran a red light without slowing down, just as another vehicle was passing through the intersection.
The gunman's car veered slightly, attempting to swerve around, but ended up colliding with the rear of the passing car. Both vehicles lost pieces and spun in different directions at the intersection. The car Jimmy was pursuing left black tire marks on the ground before crashing into a traffic light pole by the roadside.
Jimmy stopped his car at the intersection, put away the Glock, took the revolver from the console, got out of the car, and opened the driver's door as a shield, yelling, "FBI, drop your weapons and surrender."
Through Heart Eye, Jimmy had already confirmed the conditions of the people in the car; though their state of life or death was unknown, they were all unconscious.
The police car that had followed also stopped, and two officers got out. Seeing the FBI bullet-proof vest Jimmy was wearing, they understood his identity and drew their guns, aiming at the gunmen's car.
"Don't approach, they are armed gunmen," Jimmy shouted to alert the officers, "Cover me!" After saying this, he moved forward with his gun raised.
After confirming the situation in the car, Jimmy called to the officers behind, "You can come over now. Call an ambulance; everyone in the car has passed out."
While the officers were securing the scene, Jimmy took out his phone and called Mahong, "Mahong, I've been followed and attacked, now in Jersey City."
Mahong said, "We'll set off immediately, send me the location."
Jimmy replied, "I'll let you know once I get to the station."
After hanging up with Mahong, he immediately called Agent Riley in Newark, "Riley, I can't make it, just been followed and attacked, I'm in Jersey City now, heading to the station."
Riley responded, "Wait for me, I'll be right there."
Jimmy said, "No need, you do your thing, I've already told the guys in Manhattan to come."
Riley insisted, "This is New Jersey, not New York. Send me the address; I'll be right there."
Well, things had really gotten hectic now. Jimmy asked the officers which precinct they were from and texted the information to both Riley and Mahong. Once the backup officers and ambulance arrived and took the four people from the car to the hospital, with officers stationed to watch over them.
The scene was managed by the officers who collected evidence and towed the cars away, and the unfortunate victim in the car that was hit was also taken to the hospital in an ambulance.
