Philicia: "Jimmy, is something the matter? Mahong is busy."
Jimmy: "Hughes just called me. I need to rush to Newark. An explosion happened there early this morning, and it might be related to the previous explosions."
Philicia: "Hold on a second." There was no sound from Philicia's end, and after a minute or two, Mahong's voice came through, "Jimmy, what happened?"
Jimmy: "There was an explosion in Newark, New Jersey this morning. They suspect it's connected to the previous cases, and Hughes got in touch. I need to go there to provide support. I'll leave today. Have you got any leads on your end?"
Mahong: "Yeah, no problem, off you go. I'll inform you when I get a clue." He hung up after finishing.
Jimmy did not ask about Mahong's progress and had Philicia leave. When Mahong conducted the interrogation alone, he certainly had his reasons. It looked like El was going to have a good ol' time this round; Mahong was not a man to mess with.
Jimmy called Nia. Heading out of town always warranted a heads-up, and even though Nia couldn't come over recently, he still needed to let her know, so she wouldn't worry.
Jimmy wasn't taking it easy this time. He drove home, changed out of his suit into casual jeans, put on the bulletproof vest directly, took out his FBI badge chain and hung it around his neck, and dragged his suitcase downstairs. Since he was going to Newark to handle an explosion case, he didn't plan to return the same day. The last explosion in New York took over a month to deal with, even with the help of the Anti-Terrorism Bureau. God knows how long he would have to stay in Newark this time.
After checking the surroundings and making sure nothing was off, Jimmy placed his luggage in the trunk and left the apartment by car, heading downtown Manhattan. His destination was clearly Newark, and it was more convenient to head to Jersey City through the Holland Tunnel from downtown.
While driving, Jimmy kept a vigilant watch on the vehicles around and ahead with his "Heart Eye Observation" and also kept an eye on the vehicles behind him through the rearview mirror. The last time, he hadn't noticed being followed by a motorcycle for a long time; he absolutely could not make the same mistake again.
Driving down the 6th Avenue to Canal Street, near the entrance to the Holland Tunnel, traffic had inexplicably ground to a halt. Jimmy opened his window, lit a cigarette, and waited while smoking.
After waiting for a long time without the traffic moving, it seemed there had been an accident in the tunnel. What a stroke of bad luck. U-turning to Manhattan Upper City through the Lincoln Tunnel probably wouldn't be any better at this point, so he just had to wait.
Jimmy used this time to call Agent Riley. Indeed, Riley had suggested sending Jimmy, and though he didn't say it on the phone, his implication was that Jimmy should seek him out upon arrival. Sigh, bad company, really. Such a critical moment and this mess happens. He hadn't sorted out his own issues and now he had to clean up after others.
Jimmy flicked his cigarette butt out the window while he waited aimlessly.
Suddenly, through the rearview mirror, Jimmy spotted a small group of 5 or 6 motorcycles approaching from behind. He had been a bit allergic to motorcycles lately and gave them an extra glance. They lacked any formation on the street, spread out on the road, and soon passed Jimmy, continuing along Canal Street toward the road by the Hudson River.
It shouldn't be an issue. These were single riders on their motorcycles, and their appearance seemed similar to those he had seen at the Harley shop, probably just an ordinary motorcycle gang.
After waiting for over half an hour, the line of cars finally began to inch forward. Jimmy started the car and slowly moved toward the tunnel entrance, gradually picking up speed, and finally entered the tunnel at a normal pace.
The tunnel wasn't very long. After driving for a bit, Jimmy suddenly noticed in his rearview mirror that a car behind him kept signaling to turn and was weaving through the traffic. If Jimmy were still a cop, he would have flashed his lights and ordered it to pull over after the tunnel. But for now, he decided to give way and let it pass. Maybe it was an emergency.
The car soon overtook Jimmy while still signaling and continued on. However, another car was trailing it, seemingly wanting to take advantage of the path cleared ahead to squeeze through. Jimmy shook his head; these people were completely disregarding the safety of others.
After exiting the tunnel, and filling up at a gas station not far from the tunnel entrance, Jimmy had just started driving when he noticed the car that had hurried forward in the tunnel parked on the side of the road outside the gas station. Something was off. It was in such a rush before. Jimmy slowly accelerated, and when his "Heart Eye" had enough distance, he saw four people inside the car, with only the driver turning his head to look back at the passing traffic.
Jimmy drove past their car with nothing happening, seemingly overthinking it. He continued towards Newark, but shortly after, the car from before followed him. He had suspicions. Jimmy kept an eye on the car in the rear while diverging from his intended route at the upcoming intersection. After making a couple of turns, he was sure the car had been following him all along.
"Fxxk! I just changed cars yesterday, and I'm already being targeted today?" Jimmy slapped the steering wheel, musing that it was inconvenient on the main streets and that he didn't know the area well enough to draw them out of the urban area. Jimmy started to accelerate, followed by the car behind him, which sped up even more and was quickly gaining on him. They were about to make their move.
