It wasn't until evening that Mahong and his team returned.
Jimmy stood up and asked, "Mahong, did you discover anything today?"
Mahong shook his head, returned to his seat, and Philicia stood in front of Jimmy's desk and said, "We've investigated the street where the motorcycle disappeared. There's no parking lot there; cars are parked along the roadside. However, we didn't find the motorcycle because the area is surrounded by apartment buildings, and they don't have surveillance cameras outside, so we can't directly retrieve the footage."
Jimmy asked, "Did you talk to the locals?"
Philicia nodded, "They don't remember anything significant; after all, there are too many people riding motorcycles in New York."
Jimmy sat back down, disappointed, "Let's visit the parking lot from which they started tomorrow. I'll go too."
Mahong said, "Sure, but we'll need to wait until we get back from the prison."
Mahong and Philicia began to organize their things; they mainly came back to log the activities of the day and sort out the gear needed for the field, as they didn't need to bring as much when going back to rest.
Jimmy turned to Mahong and said, "By the way, I spoke with Tim from the administrative department today. There are many people who could have accessed the license plate number I registered; it's impossible to simply sift them out. If we want to continue the investigation, it seems we might have to report to Hughes. What do you think?"
Mahong said, "Let's discuss it once we have a preliminary conclusion. Right now, we have nothing definite, so reporting might not even kickstart an investigation."
Jimmy said, "Okay. I also have some new thoughts today; I want your assessment."
Mahong looked up at Jimmy and said, "Go ahead."
Jimmy said, "I suspect the people who attacked me are not the masterminds behind the bombing, Nu'er Mohammod."
Mahong said, "Continue. Your reasons."
Jimmy said, "Placing an insider in our office isn't too difficult; not everyone can resist temptation or threats. But to obtain my license number, track me all within a day – such an insider would need a higher level of clearance, and the amount they'd have to do would make them more susceptible to exposing themselves. We're all from Quantico; nobody would likely be so foolish as to expose themselves that easily."
"If he was forced to leak my information yesterday, he must have had a compelling reason. As for Nu'er, after being away from the United States for almost a year, to come back and recruit such a high-level agent as an insider seems highly unlikely."
Mahong didn't respond, considering Jimmy's reasoning. It made sense; if Nu'er Mohammod truly had such an insider, then his capabilities would increase significantly. In terms of impact, it would definitely be better to initiate a terror attack first before dealing with Jimmy.
Mahong nodded, and Jimmy continued, "Another thing, my home address is recorded in the office. If it was Nu'er's doing, using a bomb to kill me at home would probably be quicker and more precise rather than shooting from outside in a parking lot."
Mahong continued nodding, "Makes sense, but we still can't rule him out directly. Tomorrow, we'll continue interrogating El. Jimmy, you stay at the office."
Jimmy sighed. It seemed, to avoid any collateral damage, Mahong was unwilling to let him operate solo no matter what.
The three of them packed up and drove back together. Jimmy had more trouble; he had to transfer the equipment from the older assigned car to his new one before he could leave.
By the way, the new assigned car, equipped with sirens, a radio, and bulletproof doors, had a genuine Federal Government license plate, not the fake one from the previous car. Anyone familiar with the license plate rules could easily tell this car was an FBI office vehicle.
Jimmy still diligently checked his room with "Heart Eye" and made sure the hair placed at the door gap hadn't moved before he entered the house. This tedious validation process was definitely too unsafe for Nia to come over.
He simply cooked some pasta with meat sauce and green vegetables, then washed up and went to bed to watch TV.
Early next morning, Jimmy returned to the office to wait for Mahong's return. However, before they arrived, Hughes called.
Hughes said, "Jimmy, I need you to go to Newark; they had another explosion last night, and you need to support the Newark office on behalf of the Manhattan office."
Jimmy took a deep breath, "Hughes, I just survived an assassination attempt, and it's not really convenient for me to travel right now."
Hughes said, "I understand, but the Newark office specifically requested your assistance. Don't worry, I'll make sure Mahong handles the investigation here."
Jimmy said, "But Hughes, it could be very dangerous for me to go out now."
Hughes was almost at his breaking point. Even the motorcycle gunmen missed you during their surprise attack, and you're saying you are in danger? Now that you're prepared, it should be the gunmen who are worried about being neutralized by you and losing the leads."
If it hadn't been for Tim Dunn mentioning Jimmy's visit to Hughes yesterday, Hughes wouldn't have planned to send Jimmy out so soon; there were enough leads with the explosion case to delay. But now that Jimmy wanted to get involved in the internal investigation, there was no room for discussion. He needed to leave.
Hughes said, "I believe in your abilities; you'll be fine."
Having no other choice, Jimmy said, "Alright, I'll get ready and head to Newark today."
After hanging up, Jimmy immediately called Mahong. The phone rang twice before Philicia answered.
