Ten minutes later, Evelyn's car slowly drove away. Sheffield put his hands in his pant pockets and stood still, watching the car disappear from his line of sight.
'This sneaking around can't go on forever. I'll have to face Carlos and ask for his permission. Evelyn, just wait till I finish what I have to do.'
When everything was over, he wanted to settle down and be with her.
The arrogant, sexy smile was back on his lips.
At ZL Group
It was late at night. A man appeared at the entrance of the company with two paper bags.
He whistled a tune as he entered the lift and went up to the regional CEO's office.
There were very few people left on the floor. Among the assistants, only Nadia was still there.
She was surprised to see Sheffield at the office, but took the initiative to greet him. "Hello, Dr. Tang."
He replied with a smile, "Hello, Nadia. Did you guys lose track of time? You're so hard-working. Here, I got you some food."
Nadia stared at the bag in Sheffield's hand, and refused at once. "Thank you, Dr. Tang, but I'm not hungry—"
"Don't worry. I bought two. Eat!" He put the bag on her desk. Seeing the desserts in the bag, she stammered, "Um, Miss Huo doesn't eat desserts."
Sheffield smiled and replied without hesitation, "She will."
Nadia was speechless. 'He behaves so confidently in front of Evelyn, ' she thought.
He pushed the button of the automatic door and entered Evelyn's office without knocking.
Evelyn was busy writing something, and when she looked up, she was surprised to see him. "What are you doing here?" she asked. It had been almost a week since they had seen each other.
This was his first time in her office. He walked straight to her after scanning the room and its decoration. He put the paper bag on her desk. "I missed you. I haven't seen you in days, and you showed no signs of coming to see me. So, I obviously had to take the initiative."
He realized long ago that nothing would ever progress in their relationship if he left the decisions to her.
Evelyn looked at the bag and asked, "What's this?"
"It's the Hokkaido chiffon cupcake and milk cake. I also brought you something to drink. You must be hungry; you've been working for so long. Have something." He took out the desserts and the cheese tea.
He had waited for more than an hour outside the company building, but the lights in Evelyn's office stayed lit. That was when he had decided to buy her some refreshments and see her in her den.
Evelyn shook her head. "I don't eat dessert or have sweet drinks."
Sheffield ignored her protest. "Did you know that sweet food can make people happy? You work so late and I bet you are stressed as hell. Having something sweet will change your mood and you might even be able to work more efficiently."
"Really? Is there any scientific research to prove that or are these just Dr. Tang's wise words?"
Sheffield sighed. "Allow me to explain. When sugar enters a human body, our brain activates the hormones called dopamine and serotonin. These are also called the happy hormones. They affect the mood and lift your spirits. Is that scientific enough?" With that, he scooped some dessert and placed it near her lips.
Evelyn took a bite and asked, "Happy hormones?"
"Yes. It's a kind of chemical reaction that happens in your brain that stimulates feelings like excitement and happiness. Here, have one more bite. It tastes good, doesn't it? That dessert place is very popular."
"What chemical reaction? It's just psychological."
"Hmm, not exactly. Sweet food really can make people feel good. I agree it is psychological, but your hormones play a vital role as well. Next time when you are upset or anxious, you should grab a sweet snack or an ice cream or some cake. You will feel a little better. And desserts usually look cute, right. That can also improve your mood. Their soft texture, candy color and sweet taste will melt your heart." He winked.
Evelyn rolled her eyes. 'He can make everything sound so reasonable and logical. It's a waste of talent that he is not a salesman.' She asked, "So, according to your theory, I should eat desserts every day."
"Oh, no. Desserts are good, but you should watch your health too. You need a balanced diet to avoid chronic diseases."
"Fine, whatever. Give me that!" Evelyn grabbed the spoon from him and started gulping down the cake.
Sheffield took a glance at the documents in front of her, picked one up and leafed through it. "Your father really doesn't worry about wearing you out. He has given you so much work to deal with."
Evelyn shook her head. "Actually, he has reduced my workload. But there is just too much to take care of in the company. I want to help him."
He closed the file and put it back on the desk. "It's past eleven o'clock. What time do you plan on finishing work today?"
"A bit longer. By the way, how did you come up here?" The entrance to their company was strictly guarded during nights. Even the employees of the company were generally forbidden to come back, let alone an outsider like Sheffield.
He smiled mysteriously. "I have my ways."
Evelyn nibbled on the dessert and asked with a frown, "What ways? Tell me!"
"Okay, okay! If it were someone else, I wouldn't give out my secrets. But, anything for my Evelyn." He took his phone out of his pocket, looked through some folders and put the phone in front of her eyes.
On the screen was the picture of them riding the elephant in D City.
Evelyn stopped eating. 'He kept the photo, ' she thought, looking at the photo and feeling nostalgic.
"I showed this photo to your security guard and told him that I am your boyfriend."
Trying to suppress the urge to hit him, Evelyn asked, "And the guard just let you through?"
"Of course, he didn't! I had to call his son. As soon as he arrived, I slipped into the building."
"How do you know his son?"
"Last time I came here, I saw the son bring him dinner. The son is one of my racing buddies." Sheffield had specifically chosen to come over during his buddy's father's working hours.
"There are more than one security guards," she said.
