Rotting Land: Survive

Chapter 123: Gambling with Fate

Judging by the height of the floor the man was on and the number of zombies at the base of the building, Tang Xiaoquan estimated it would take him at most 3 to 4 minutes to reach the ground.

But the reality was that it took him twice as long as the estimated time, plus even more, before he leisurely appeared at the entrance of the ground floor.

For this, Tang Xiaoquan's explanation was either the man was too cautious, or he was just too dawdling.

But anyway, the man came down alive, and that was the most important thing.

The man in his sight peeked around cautiously from behind the wall.

After ensuring there was nothing suspicious around, he crouched down and quickly jogged towards his car.

It was a Buick GL8 parked by the roadside, and judging from its understated yet elegant appearance, the man was probably a mature and reserved, successful career man.

However, these meant nothing to the matter at hand; whether he could successfully start the car was key.

Holding the key in his hand, the man opened the car door, at which point Tang Xiaoquan, watching from afar, heaved a sigh of relief.

He had been worrying that out of habit, the man might use the remote key due to nervousness, and if his worry came true, the unlocking buzz would definitely catch the zombies' attention, and by then...

Fortunately, the man was rational enough not to make such a rookie mistake.

The man squeezed into the car laboriously, his somewhat clumsy stature causing the vehicle to rock up and down twice.

And once he was fully inside the car, due to the sunshade film blocking the view and the intense sunlight reflecting off it, Tang Xiaoquan could no longer see inside the car by sight.

So now, he, like the rest of his companions, could only wait in silence, waiting for the man's success, waiting for that familiar engine sound to start.

The car continued to shake incessantly, and Tang Xiaoquan knew that was due to the man crawling around inside.

After all, he entered through the passenger side, and if he wanted to start the car successfully, he would have to climb over to the driver's seat.

One could imagine how embarrassed the man must be at this moment inside the car; someone like Ah Cheng, who'd had similar experiences, even furrowed his brow, as though recalling his own crawling experience.

After about 3 to 4 minutes of this back and forth, the shaking car finally began to settle down.

Then, a further 3 to 4 minutes passed before the roar, indicating the engine start, sounded precisely on cue.

Great! It worked! Unable to restrain himself, Tang Xiaoquan clapped his hand, a hard-to-suppress look of joy appearing on his previously tense face.

However... to his utter disbelief, his slightest joy didn't last for even 10 seconds before the sound of the "rumble" became inaudible again.

Stalled! This was not a good sign! Tang Xiaoquan's heart instantly sank to the lowest point.

"Rumble, rumble~" The engine roared to life again, but after groaning out twice, it abruptly stopped.

"Damn it! What's going on? Isn't that car pretty new, why would it..." Slamming his hand on the wall in frustration, Tang Xiaoquan found it hard to accept the reality in front of him, given his lack of car knowledge.

"Maybe the car hasn't been used for a long time, and the battery might be dead," Ah Cheng wasn't entirely sure himself.

"Huh? Dead battery? What do you mean?"

Anxious to understand the situation, Tang Xiaoquan quickly asked, but to his disappointment, he didn't get the answer he wanted; instead, the Buick GL8 that had just stalled suddenly roared incessantly as if provoked.

"Buzz! Buzz buzz! Buzz buzz buzz buzz~" Watching the zombies being gradually attracted by the vehicle's roar, Tang Xiaoquan felt like his head was about to explode:

"What's he doing! Is he crazy! Doesn't he know that by doing that..."

He quickly threw two "Incendiary Bottles," but the sound of the shattered bottles was trivial compared to the thunderous roar of the engine, as tiny as a leaf in the ocean.

The change in the zombie horde's direction was unavoidable! Tang Xiaoquan stood frozen in place.

"He's crazy! That man is absolutely insane! We have to stop his foolish actions, otherwise, we'll all end up finished!"

Gazing quickly around himself, Tang Xiaoquan hoped to find a way to communicate with the man inside the car.

However, just at that moment, Ah Cheng suddenly piped up: "Brother Quan, he might... not be crazy, just..."

"Just what?" Sensing that Ah Cheng might know something, Tang Xiaoquan quickly queried.

"Just... maybe he's trying to start the car by revving the engine!"

"Really? Are you sure?"

"Well~" Blushing slightly, Ah Cheng replied a bit embarrassedly, "I'm not too sure, but I've seen my uncle do it before!"

"Then did your uncle succeed?"

"Yeah, he did!" Nodding affirmatively, Ah Cheng finally provided a definite answer.

Inhaling deeply on instinct, two paths now lay before Tang Xiaoquan:

First, let the man start the car, eventually allowing him to be devoured by the zombie horde. The advantage is that there is no need for them to take risks for a rescue, but the downside is that it may attract more zombies due to the engine noise.

Second, stop the man from starting, but this will inevitably expose the location of his teammates, causing them to be targeted by the zombies.

Neither option was preferable; was there really no other way?

Fingers instinctively fiddling with the hair in front of his forehead...

Without a doubt, if the man could start the car smoothly, all doubts would be resolved, but...

Glancing at Ah Cheng once more, Tang Xiaoquan finally discarded the idea of confirming the success rate with him.

After all, such things could never have conclusive answers, unless you have the ability to ask the one up above, so...

The zombie horde had already begun moving towards the Buick GL8, and it wouldn't be long before the street would echo with a man's tragic cries.

It was now time to make a decision, or else, in just a while, there wouldn't truly be another chance!

Fate! Today, I'll bet against you this once!

His eyes gradually sharpening, Tang Xiaoquan made the most daring and important decision of his life:

"Ah Cheng, inform Brother Hu and Wu Chao to stay hidden, I'm going to lure the zombies over!"

"Ah!" Screaming in disbelief, Ah Cheng tremulously confirmed: "Brother, Brother Quan, what did you just say? You're bringing the zombies here?"

"Yeah!" Firmly replying with determination, Tang Xiaoquan briefly explained: "Our supplies last only for a day, missing this chance to leave may mean we'll never find another one! So, I've decided to take a risk and give that man one last chance!"

Understanding his brother's decision, Ah Cheng no longer said anything further, quickly relaying the message to the rooftop, and person by person, the decision from the rooftop soon reached Hu Xiaodong's ears.

The young man's decision was undoubtedly extremely risky, with even the slightest mistake potentially plunging the team into irreversible disaster, but Hu Xiaodong calmly refrained from objecting because he believed in his own judgment; he firmly believed the young man upstairs had his reasons!
