Above the Rim, Below the proverty line

Chapter 56: The Rookie Wall

Opening Scene – November, One Month Into the SeasonThe NBA high had worn off.

Gone were the lights and confetti of Opening Night.

Gone were the poetic write-ups and ESPN "Reaper Watch" segments.

Now?

Scouting reports. Rotations. Fatigue. Film. Ice. Repeat.

Kyle Wilson stood in the Celtics locker room staring at the rotation board.

His name?

13th Man. "Situational Minutes."

The Grind BeginsThree weeks into the season and Kyle's stats were modest:

4.7 points per game

2.9 rebounds

0.8 blocks

38% FG

24% from three

His defense?

Still above average.

But teams were adapting.

Now they dared him to shoot.

They ran him off closeouts with pump fakes.

They forced him to chase high-speed shooters around 3-point curls.

His greatest strength—defensive awareness—was now being studied.

And exploited.

Ime's WarningCoach Udoka pulled Kyle into his office.

Film playing behind him: Kyle slipping on a switch, late on a rotation, bricking a corner three.

"This is what happens when you get comfortable with almost."

Kyle didn't argue.

"We play the Bucks tomorrow. You might not see the floor. You've hit the rookie wall, kid. Question is… you breaking through it or letting it bury you?"

On Social Media – The NoiseESPN analyst Kendrick Perkins:

"Kyle Wilson got da tools, but his game too raw for playoff-level minutes. That boy needs a G-League run before he burn out."

A Bleacher Report tweet went viral:

"The Reaper's Scythe is DULL AF 💀 Kyle Wilson shooting 4/18 from 3 this season. Yikes."

Insta comments were worse.

"Washed already."

"One mixtape and now he think he Ja Morant."

"He's like if Zion forgot how to dunk."

Kyle saw it all. Didn't respond.

Training Room – Ari Confronts HimKyle sat in the cold tub, headphones on, hoodie up.

Ari walked in holding a folder.

"Endorsement deals are stalling."

"I figured."

"Nike, Jordan, and Adidas all cooled interest after you turned them down. Kyonic's not moving units either."

"It's fine."

"No. It's not. You're fading, and you're okay with it."

He looked at her finally.

"I gave my whole soul to just get here, Ari. Now that I'm here, I got nothing left to feed the fire."

"Then steal the fuel. That's what real killers do."

Elsewhere – The 2020 Draft Class Begins to ShineAnthony Edwards – putting up 19 points a game for Minnesota. Loud. Flashy. Confident.

LaMelo Ball – Rookie of the Year buzz. Crossovers, deep threes, highlight dimes.

Tyrese Haliburton – surgical IQ and poise.

James Wiseman – slowly finding his groove with Golden State.

Obi Toppin, Patrick Williams, and Saddiq Bey—all showing flashes.

Kyle?

The "mystery man" of the class.

A 6'8" defender with upside… but no clear role.

Flashback – The Pain of ComparisonKyle scrolled his phone late at night in bed.

He saw a Bleacher Report draft comparison:

Top 2020 Picks Then vs. Now

And under his name?

"Still raw. Possibly a bust."

He locked his screen.

He couldn't sleep.

Celtics vs. Bucks – DNP-CDThe game was fast. Physical. Intense.

Giannis dominated the paint.

Jrue Holiday picked apart switches.

Kyle?

Sat the whole game.

DNP-CD: Did Not Play – Coach's Decision.

After the game, Ari met him in the garage.

"This how it ends?"

"No. It's how I level up."

Private Midnight Gym SessionThat night, Kyle hit the Celtics training facility.

Alone.

Three hours.

No cameras.

No music.

Just reps. Pain. Sweat.

Hook shots.

Footwork.

Free throws.

100 corner threes.

Closeouts from every angle.

He whispered after each make:

"I'm still here."

"I'm still here."

"I'm still here."

The Next Game – Vs. ClevelandIme gave him 6 minutes in the second quarter.

In those 6 minutes:

One diving save

One transition block

One tip-in

One corner three

He subbed out.

Didn't smile.

Didn't nod.

Just sat back down, towel over his face.

Ime wrote something on his clipboard.

Rookie Group Text – TensionA group chat with 2020 rookies lit up:

ANTHONY EDWARDS:

"Wilson y'all see that tip-in? Not bad."

LAMelo BALL:

"Bro finally woke up."

SADDIQ BEY:

"Y'all foul. He just needs time."

WILSON:

"I'm still here."

No response for 20 minutes.

Then Melo texted back:

"Then show us."

Ari's Hustle Behind the ScenesAri met with a small indie sportswear brand, Forge Athletics.

"Kyle might be struggling now. But when he catches fire, he won't just wear the brand. He'll be the brand."

The CEO leaned forward.

"And if he never catches fire?"

"Then I bet wrong. But I never bet to break even."

Final Scene – Celtics Film RoomIme stood before the team.

Paused the footage on Kyle's defense.

"This right here? That's how you EARN minutes."

He rewound.

"Everyone talks about talent. But survival? That's discipline. That's mindset."

Kyle sat straighter in his chair.

Ime looked right at him.

"The wall's not meant to stop you. It's meant to find out who you are when climbing feels impossible."
