The Boundless Expanse(An Epic System Apocalypse LitRPG)

Chapter 637

Within him, the inklings of a solution were coming together, revolving around the interplay of his recent upgrades to both his Elemental mastery and Dao. His Primal attack skill had been created long ago, back when he was only on the first Step of his Dao Seed, and below ten percent mastery of his element. Then it had just been a conglomeration of various energies, made potent by conceptual resonance and brute force rather than technique. It was time to reforge the skill anew, and create something more befitting of his path. While he most likely wouldn't reach the next rarity, he could still upgrade Manifestation of Vengeance to the peak of Primal, or somewhere close to it.

To do this, Sam had to think, properly think, about what the skill actually meant. He had a far more nuanced understanding of his Dao Seed at this point, and had two Dao Fragments that could be added in.

His thoughts raced, and a light appeared from the darkness. His Dao, so far, had shown a road of balance. Of vengeance served, and denied. What he had currently was akin to a hammer the size of a building, raw destructive potential with little control once it left his hand, or hammer. However, his latest Dao upgrades had shown the importance of restraint. In that restraint was the necessity to pick the right target. He needed something that was absolutely devastating to a single target, while not wasting its power on anything else. While this wouldn't improve the overall strength of the skill much, in the Tower, filled with one on one combat with many powerful foes, concentrating all of that power down would dramatically increase its impact on an individual.

Sam could feel his Mountain's Flesh ability beginning to wane, taking constant damage from the field of spatial blades around him. However, he had enough time. With the Dao side of the upgrade finished, Sam moved on to elemental energy. Previously, he had simply used the resource as a source of extra damage, but now he had enough mastery to create some additional effects. Earth, at his level, was able to manipulate weight and density to a certain degree. With the conceptual nature of this, he could increase the impact of his skill, allowing it to drill through tougher enemies. Or at least, he hoped so.

As a few of the nearby blades of darkness disappeared, Sam made his move. Cancelling Mountain's Flesh, he dropped his hammer, bringing his hands together. For this, he needed to use his flesh as a conduit, rather than his weapon.

A glowing orb of power built between his fingertips, glowing red and blue as he forced his Dao to compress down into a tighter space. The smaller the initial size of the beam, the more of that damage could be concentrated. Next came the conceptual investment, with Sam imbuing the attack with his desire, to unleash the sum total of his revenge upon a single target while sparing others.

The sphere grew and grew in brightness, until it was almost blinding. Still, Sam was far from done. A layer of purified mana coated the orb, ready to be leached off once he fired off the beam. Finally, elemental energy surged down his arms and into the conglomeration. The orb changed color slightly, becoming a deeper hue. It started to wobble as Sam tweaked the energy levels. With one final burst of will, he crushed it into a marble sized shape.

Sam took a look at the battle above, judging that the Shadow Raven was the most dangerous of the threats present. The Foreman was already wounded, and his allies weren't that dangerous. They could have been, but after seeing Sam's obliteration of their ally, and out of fear for the Foreman, they remained distant, and mostly useless.

Sam aligned his attack with the bulk of the Shadow Raven, a laughably easy task given its size, and then let loose. A pencil thick lance of burning power erupted from between his fingers, searing through the air. It struck the Shadow Raven a moment later just above its right wing. Where it hit, a ripple of latent energy washed across the surface of the monster. There was no change for a few seconds, and Sam found himself wondering if he had created a dud skill. Then, with a whoomph of flame, it exploded, blasting apart a massive chunk of the elemental.

The Shadow Raven let out a keening cry as its wing turned to dust, a wave of elemental unbinding rampaging across its flesh. The Foreman took the opportunity to attack, flipping end over end in the air to deliver an almighty blow of his hammer to the center of the monster's forehead. A spike of concentrated lava and heat hammered down into the elemental, driven all the way through its head by the Foreman's strength. The Raven shuddered, and fell from the sky, its remaining wing failing it.
