The next day, Lin Feng took Zhang Yuxi and the babies to the supermarket. They had been in Modu for so long, yet they still hadn't gone to the supermarket together as a family. Perhaps because the Lunar New Year was approaching, the supermarket had already taken on a festive air. The place was crowded with shoppers, and the atmosphere was full of cheer. After buying some ingredients, they headed home.
The fourth baby tugged on the second baby's sleeve and pointed to the eggs in the shopping cart. The second baby blinked and gave a knowing smile.
Zhang Yuxi was pushing the stroller with the babies, while Lin Feng's shopping cart was full of groceries. Since it was inconvenient to shop with children, they didn't buy too much. Due to the approaching New Year, the supermarket was running many promotions with significant discounts.
"I'll come back later to get some non-perishables and other New Year's goods," Lin Feng said.
Zhang Yuxi had no objections. "Let Mom watch the babies. I'll come with you," she offered.
Lin Feng took the opportunity to squeeze her hand. "Okay." He could feel Zhang Yuxi's growing attachment to him.
After Lin Feng and Zhang Yuxi put the groceries in the kitchen, they left again, letting Zhao Lizhen, who was on the phone in the living room, know they were heading out.
"I'm watching them, you two go on ahead!" Zhao Lizhen said, covering the mouthpiece of her phone.
The fourth and second babies beckoned to each other, and the other two toddled over. The fourth baby pointed to the eggs on the kitchen counter.
The second baby, the most articulate of the bunch, explained, "See those eggs? Mom told us that if we hold them and keep them warm, they'll hatch into little chicks! We should each take one and hold it when we sleep. That way, we'll have chicks by tomorrow morning."
The other two babies' eyes lit up at the suggestion. What a brilliant idea!
The third baby looked up. "But they're too high. We can't reach them..."
"Use a stool!" the eldest baby declared.
Working together, the four babies managed to move a stool into the kitchen. In the process, the fourth baby slipped and fell. His older brother and sisters immediately rushed over to him.
He just shook his head. "I'm okay!"
The two-meter distance wasn't much of a challenge for the determined little team.
As the saying goes, when children go quiet, they're either asleep or up to no good. Zhao Lizhen hung up the phone and noticed the sudden silence.
"Babies? What are you all doing? Where are you?"
Just then, the four babies were scurrying up the stairs from the other side of the dining room. Zhao Lizhen heard no reply, only a few soft thumps from above. A knot of worry tightened in her chest, and she hurried upstairs to check on them.
When she pushed the door open, she found all four babies in the bedroom, staring at her in perfect, guilty unison.
"Babies, what were you just talking about? Grandma called for you, why didn't you answer?"
Just then, the phone in the living room began to ring.
"Be good now," Zhao Lizhen told them. "Grandma has to get the phone, and then I'll come back and play with you, okay?"
The babies nodded obediently.
The moment Zhao Lizhen left, they all grinned like little foxes. They carefully placed the eggs they had acquired under their pillows.
The second baby said, her voice filled with anticipation, "When we sleep tonight, we'll hold them to keep them warm. Then we'll have chicks tomorrow!"
The eldest baby broke into a silly grin. "It'll be a surprise for Mom and Dad! They'll be so happy when they see the chicks!"
The fourth baby gently stroked his own egg. He cooed to it as if it were a tiny baby, "There, there, little chick-baby. You sleep here for now, okay?"
After saying goodbye to their respective eggs, they trotted downstairs, perfectly content.
Zhang Yuxi and Lin Feng returned with a large haul of groceries.
"Honey, could you put the vegetables in the fridge?" he asked.
"Sure," she replied.
Had it been Lin Feng, he definitely would have noticed that some of the eggs were missing.
As Zhang Yuxi closed the refrigerator door, she noticed the third baby hovering nearby, looking like they wanted to say something but couldn't. "What is it, sweetie? Do you have something to tell Mom?"
The third baby hesitated for a moment before shaking their head. "Mom, I have a surprise for you tomorrow! You're going to be so happy!"
Zhang Yuxi paused. "Oh? Can you tell Mom what the surprise is?"
The third baby shook their head firmly. "Nope, not yet! I can only tell you tomorrow morning!"
Zhang Yuxi didn't press the issue. "Alright, then! Mommy will wait for your surprise tomorrow!"
The third baby grinned and happily ran off to play.
Zhao Lizhen and Zhang Fuyong planned to have a proper New Year's celebration this year, which meant they needed to prepare all the special goods. Seeing the sales at the supermarket, Lin Feng had bought so much that they were already nearly set. Thinking back to last New Year's in Meicheng, Zhao Lizhen felt a wave of nostalgia.
「Tonight,」
The babies were all surprisingly eager and cooperative about going to bed. Zhang Yuxi and Lin Feng were both a little puzzled. Something seemed a bit off, especially with the eldest, who never wanted to go to bed early but was suddenly leading the charge.
Zhang Yuxi laughed. "The third baby told me they have a surprise for me tomorrow. Do you think it has something to do with that?"
"Maybe," Lin Feng replied, though he couldn't imagine what it could be.
In the middle of the night, Lin Feng went to get the babies up to pee. As he reached out to pick up the fourth baby, his hand touched something wet and slimy. That feels wrong. He pulled his hand back and stared at it in the dim light. Diarrhea? A leaky diaper? But there's no smell at all! For a moment, Lin Feng couldn't process what was happening. Then, he peered closer into the bed. Is that... an egg?
Lin Feng quickly checked the fourth baby's little pants, but they were clean. It really was a broken egg! He frowned, wondering why on earth his son would have an egg in his bed while he slept.
Not dwelling on it for now, he took the fourth baby to the bathroom. After changing his son's pants, Lin Feng tucked him into the big bed under the covers with them. He then went to clean up the fourth baby's crib, replacing the soiled bedding with a fresh little quilt and blanket.
Once everything was done, he looked at his soundly sleeping son and couldn't help but chuckle to himself.
