Dusk (BL Light Novel)

chapter 147

The enemy team hit by the ultimate got staggered and couldn’t immediately use their skills. In that window, our DPS rained down attacks, chipping away at their HP. One enemy DPS with an evasive move pulled back slightly and kept trying to hit me, but since I was a tank with low bleed, there was no recovering the damage they’d just taken. After realizing they weren’t doing much damage to me, the enemy DPS hurriedly tried hitting someone else nearby—but that one was also a tank on our team. It was hard to recover health through lifesteal. The team fight was going smoothly. Both of the enemy DPS were at slivers of health. Every time they tried to cast a skill, they got blocked by me, and thanks to our DPS managing to avoid and neutralize the enemy’s ultimates, our team had taken significantly less damage overall.Of course, our DPS didn’t have as much HP or defense as tanks, so they had taken some hits. But even so, at this rate, we’d be able to end the fight and recover while taking down Hoom and Shaman—[Team] Retaking a Class (Remiel) has issued a warning—Watch out!A red danger mark popped up on one corner of the minimap. Gang Jaegyung had pinged it.And from that direction, the support and DPS we’d encountered in the mid lane earlier appeared. They must’ve come to back up their team as soon as they saw the fight break out in center. What the hell is with their team spirit? They still came to back up even after seeing this mess? But the problem was, that support’s ultimate was a real pain. It ignored terrain and applied continuous stagger, so if we weren’t careful, this could totally flip.If we got hit and staggered, dodging enemy attacks would be nearly impossible. Our DPS would almost certainly die. So I ignored the enemy DPS who were basically one hit from death and lunged at the support to interrupt their cast. And just then, I heard a firm voice.“Don’t interrupt.”At those words, I reacted on reflex, hurriedly redirecting my aim and passing the enemy support by.[- “Justify yourself!”]By the narrowest margin, the enemy support who hadn’t been interrupted successfully cast their ultimate. The casting character’s voice echoed across the field, and white bandages began drifting toward our team within the area of effect. What the hell? Why not interrupt that? If we take this hit, our whole team could get wiped.I was about to complain to Gang Jaegyung, but he casually swapped positions with our squishy ranged DPS using a movement skill and continued calmly:“I’ll take care of Sola. Mr. Go, please handle the rest as much as possible. Olavia used her evasive and got out of the AoE range, and I moved Migo too, so I’ll clean things up quick.”Rattling off his words like a machine gun, Gang Jaegyung began attacking Sola, the enemy DPS. He was inside the ultimate’s stagger field ✧ NоvеIight ✧ (Original source) too and should’ve been affected, but thanks to a support-exclusive skill, his stagger cleared quickly, giving him a huge advantage. But I didn’t have a skill like that. I’d already used my one similar move earlier, so I had to tough out the stagger raw. And now he wanted me to “handle the rest as much as possible”? Did he seriously think I could do that? How far was he planning to trust me?…The corners of my mouth lifted on their own. So he really believed I could handle this much, huh…? What a cute bastard. What a precious bastard. What a proud little bastard. I’d definitely live up to that trust.Stagger wasn’t an insanely scary status effect in itself. The real problem was the enemy support’s ultimate could apply it to multiple people simultaneously while ignoring obstacles. The stagger itself wore off in under two seconds, and even if you were re-staggered repeatedly, there were still ways to move.I confirmed that my character was staggered and counted the timing in my head. The moment it ended, I activated a skill and charged into the enemy lines. After using one skill, I was staggered again. It might’ve been bad if another attack came in, but it seemed the enemy team, excited that the support’s ult had landed well, was focused on killing our other DPS. I, the tank, was being completely ignored. That was the opportunity. The moment I saw the stagger wear off, I used another skill and stepped forward. Then, when staggered again, I started spamming auto attacks just to inch forward.Once I’d closed the distance, I used a damage buff and, timing the stagger end precisely, unleashed a wide-area skill on the enemy DPS who’d passed me earlier. As Gang Jaegyung had mentioned earlier, Aegis had pretty high base attack. Plus, my level was decent, so I had bonus stats for attack and crit, and I’d just doped. Thanks to all that, one enemy DPS took a crit and died with a scream.[Dingdigidiridingdigiding (Aegis) >>> GodHandWriter (Gazelle) KILL!!]I got staggered again after landing the kill, but honestly, I’d already done more than enough to pull my weight.[- “Let’s finish this!”][- “Alright, let’s set the table!”]Seeing me engage the enemy, our team’s other tank, BlackHippo, quickly approached and used his ultimate to pull the enemy team together. Right on cue, our ranged DPS used their ultimate too, and the clumped-up enemy team was lifted into the air—then skewered instantly by a rain of massive, deadly cutlery falling from the sky.[Gando (Olavia) >>> StickyRice (Berry) KILL!!][Gando (Olavia) >>> JuicyBooty (Pond) KILL!!][Team] Gando (Olavia): BuurrpThree enemies were instantly sent back to the respawn screen. A completely satisfying team fight—except for not interrupting the support’s ultimate.[HotPoop (Migo) >>> PlumpHamster (Miira) KILL!!][HotPoop (Migo) >>> Decaffeinator (Sola) KILL!!]Apparently the other flank had gone well too—kill feed lit up blue, and the satisfying voice notification confirmed the enemy team had been wiped.[All] GodHandWriter (Gazelle): whoa wtf[All] GodHandWriter (Gazelle): dingdidiring dude is goddamn cool;[All] Dingdigidiridingdigiding (Aegis): it’s dingdigidiridiriding[All] GodHandWriter (Gazelle): ok ringdingdong dude[All] Dingdigidiridingdigiding (Aegis): dingdigidiridiriding, I said[All] Decaffeinator (Sola): even he got it wrong just call him dangdakkungdarakkungTheir whole team was marveling in all-chat, and as I basked in the hype while clacking away at my keyboard, Gang Jaegyung chimed in next to me with a soft voice and direct praise.“As expected of Yeong. You were amazing.”He casually called me Yeong, and though I noticed right away, it didn’t bother me much—probably because I was in such a good mood.“I only pulled it off ‘cause it was me. Anyone else wouldn’t have made it.”“Exactly. I trusted you because it was you. If it were anyone else, I would’ve played it safe.”A low chuckle followed. I glanced sideways—Gang Jaegyung was smiling happily, probably because the team fight went just as he’d planned. Seriously, he’s insufferable like this.Anyway, that aside.“So why’d you tell me not to interrupt the support ult?”If we had interrupted it, the team fight would’ve gone even smoother. It would've saved time too, and we wouldn’t have needed to burn so many ultimates to finish the fight. So it made no sense to me that Gang Jaegyung, of all people—the one who would’ve known that best—had told me not to interrupt.“If an ult gets interrupted mid-cast, the cooldown gets shortened. That means it’ll be up again by the next team fight, and we’ll have to worry about it all over again. I didn’t want Miira to be a factor next time.”“…That’s it? Why not just keep interrupting?”“Wouldn’t it be better if there was zero chance of getting hit? No need to even think about it.”“We can just interrupt again when it comes up.”“Exactly—so instead of wasting time on that, we attack more freely.”Okay, to be fair, he’s not wrong. In fact, that was probably the most logical call. But this wasn’t ranked. It was a normal match… Do we really have to think this hard for a casual game? This isn’t even high elo.“And my ultimate cooldown’s a little awkward right now too. If we stall a bit, it’ll be ready for the next fight. So, you know. Two birds with one stone.”“Why are you putting this much brainpower into it? It’s a normal game—we can win easy without stressing.”I always knew Gang Jaegyung was like this, but still. Sometimes (okay, a lot of the time), it got frustrating. He pursued logic so obsessively it exhausted everyone just watching him. Sure, that’s what made him impressive—and even admirable. It’s probably why I still liked him.“But I can only do this when you’re here! If it’s not Yeong, there’s no one else who can follow my thought process. When else am I gonna try this stuff?”“…”I hope he lives a life of pure logic forever.“Hmph. Fine, then. Keep going. I’ll match you as best I can.”“Really?”“Yeah.”If Dusk ever adds faction wars or whatever later, maybe I wouldn’t mind being on the same team with him at least once. No idea if we’d be in sync, but Gang Jaegyung would be over the moon regardless.
