Road to be the Best Chess Player in the World!

Chapter 267: The Mysterious Man in the Park

"Damn! He is crazy! How many people has he beaten right now?!"

"I don't know, it should be 12, right?"

"He is a super grandmaster, I tell you that! There is no way he could be other than that!"

"Yeah, even Old Man Krauss couldn't beat him, and he is the strongest in this neighborhood!"

The chatters were quite loud, attracting attention to the particular corner of the park. Sheva and Anna were curious to see what was going on. They didn't even have any idea here, not knowing what the people there were saying, since they talked in German.

Much to their surprise, though, after slipping through the crowd there, both teenagers could see a chess game, with someone local on one side thinking hard and a mysterious person wearing a cap, sunglasses, and a mask on the other side of the board. Not only that, a stack of money was also on the table, as if it were a gambling game in a casino that often appears in Hollywood movies.

"Oh, for God's sake… What is it, a trigger for an anime plot?" Sheva felt the corner of his mouth twitching unconsciously.

"Um? Why would you think that?" Anna asked, taken aback by his reaction.

"No, nothing." Sheva shook his head quickly, not wanting to explain further. "Just a… Wild imagination on my part. Forget it." He said one last time, as if trying to convince himself to forget about this matter.

Yeah, this sight suddenly reminded Sheva of every sports anime that he had watched in the past. Somehow, the main character would stumble upon people playing the sport that was the main theme of the story in the most random place in the world, triggering a hidden plot or something similar. This always worked, even for the least popular sport in the world. Hell, Sheva could even remember one scene where the main character in an anime somehow stumbled on someone practicing American Football. In a fucking barn. In Japan!

Sheva always thought that it was a ridiculous way to introduce a new plot, yet he had never expected he would experience something like that in his life. Here he was, stumbling into a chess game in Biel, somehow feeling like the main protagonist of the sports anime that he usually watched.

"Well, shall we take a better look?" Anna asked, feeling intrigued by this event.

Not having any reason to refuse, Sheva just shrugged. "Sure, why not?"

They tried to inquire about the current situation to some of the spectators there, and while most of them didn't really speak English, both Anna and Sheva finally managed to figure out the situation after finding a young man who was kind enough to explain even with his limited English.

It turned out that this park was the usual meeting point for any chess lovers in Biel, and since this town held the international festival annually, the number of people who came here was quite large. This time, around 20 people gathered, still in high momentum after watching the tournament yesterday. They were in a high spirit, putting a bet here and there for quick bucks.

However, everything changed when the mysterious man came. He started challenging everyone here with a simple rule. He would provide the initial 100 French Swiss, and whoever wanted to play had to pay 10 bucks here. The one who was able to not lose would get all the money on the table, winning it all in one sweep.

Of course, this was enough to attract everyone's attention. They all were eager to have their host here, not only for the quick 100 bucks, but also to make this mysterious man pay for his arrogance. Yeah, after all, what word could they use to describe the man who wanted to challenge the entire community and was confident that he wouldn't lose except for arrogance?

However, it seemed that the mysterious man didn't just bark here. He had the skill to back up his arrogance. If Sheva was not wrong, this should be the 13th game of the day, yet no one had ever gotten any result against the mysterious man except for the L.

Somehow, this reminded Sheva about the past, especially the event that eventually led him into the chess world. The boy couldn't help but snort, finally realizing where that déjà vu feeling came from earlier.

"Is there anything funny?" Anna asked curiously.

"No, no, just a little bit nostalgic." Sheva shook his head quickly. "Have I ever told you about how I got roped into this sport?" Seeing the girl shook her head, he continued, "Well, it is funny, because I feel like I got thrown back at that time right now."

After listening to the full story, Anna also snorted here, finding this coincidence to be funny. The situation here was basically the exact same as when Sheva started playing chess; with a master going to challenge the neighborhood by using money as a stake to attract attention, just to come undefeated against them all. Yeah, Sheva would call the mysterious man in front of him a master, because there was no way anyone else could maintain this kind of consistency for the whole 13 games perfectly like him.

"So, are you going to join the challenge just like you did in the past?" Anna asked with a smile.

Sheva pondered for a moment, not giving any definitive answer yet. Instead of doing that, he murmured lowly, 'System, can you scan him first?' Yeah, the boy wanted to see what level the mysterious man had, so he had an idea of what to expect if he joined the fun.

However, much to his surprise, the answer that the system gave was something that he had never seen before.

[DING! The scan is successful!]

[Name: ???]

Attacking ?

Defense ?

Calculation ?

Strategy ?

Intuition ?

Time management ?

'Um?!' Sheva frowned immediately, was taken aback by what he saw in front of him. 'The scan is successful, yet nothing is shown in the interface? Not even his name? System, what is going on here?' He wondered.

Well, it didn't take a long time for the system to answer, as within the next second, Sheva could hear another notification popping inside his head.

[DING!]

[Congratulations, Host, for triggering an emergency mission!]
