Run Away If You Can

chapter 19

I stared at him, my face as pale as death. Nathaniel Miller sat there with such sleek arrogance that he looked almost out of place even in this hell. His boredom was unique—he regarded this grotesque spectacle as if it were the most tedious thing imaginable. And yet even he, like everyone else here, had glazed eyes. He must be seriously drunk. He’d only undone a couple of buttons on his shirt as he sipped wine, an unclothed omega straddling him. One hand held the glass, the other draped carelessly over the couch back. Occasionally he lowered that arm, grasped the omega’s hair between his thighs, and shook it. Like a soulless sex toy, the omega responded by engulfing Nathaniel’s length even deeper, bobbing its head fervently.A handful of naked omegas clustered at his feet, panting their desire. Nathaniel glanced at them as if mocking their desperation—then looked away.Ah.I almost heard him whisper it like a sigh. How utterly tiresome. He took a sip of wine, then tilted the glass. The scarlet liquid plunged toward the floor. The omegas at his feet lunged forward, licking it up like starving dogs. Watching them, Nathaniel parted his fingers—then the heavy glass inverted.Crack! The sharp crash shattered the glass into a thousand shards. Naked omegas crawling on their knees were cut and scraped, bleeding where they fell. Yet they felt no pain. One slid across the blood-slick marble only to right itself and continue its crawl.“Ha ha ha ha.”Someone laughed as they masturbated atop the shards—not an omega, of course.Nathaniel turned his head with that same bored expression. He reached for a cigarette on the table, then his eyes locked on me.My blood went cold and my face froze.A wave of dizziness stole the color from my feet, as if the blood had drained away. I forced down a dry swallow. He stared at me without moving. His eyes, usually so sharp, were unusually unfocused tonight—caught between hallucination and reality. As proof, the hand that reached for the cigarette faltered, and the wooden case slipped from the marble table, cracking apart with a hollow snap. Cigarettes scattered. Nathaniel slowly followed their path with his lashes, blinked once, and then turned his gaze back to me.His eyes drifted through the air like features in an aquarium glass—meaningless and detached.“Hey… Prosecutor.”His languid voice cut through the orgiastic cacophony to me alone. How could his words come so transparently? He blinked slowly, still sounding half-asleep.“How did you get in here…? That can’t be right…”Muttering to himself, he picked up the open wine bottle and poured a fresh glass. The crimson flood swirled before settling. He stared into it, entranced, as if waiting for calm waves.Strange… no amount of alcohol should do that.I cocked my head. I’d assumed he was simply drunk—but these men who seemed even more intoxicated were still getting erections and fucking omegas mercilessly. If you’re that drunk, you shouldn’t be able to get hard—unless extreme alphas are different.I’d heard extreme alphas had supercharged immune systems and rapid healing—traits that propelled them to the top. Maybe their pheromones bolstered them too. If I, a beta, felt woozy in all this scent, omegas would be knocked unconscious—and normal alphas even more so. Only extreme alphas could retain any rational thought. I envied them all in that moment.Nathaniel still couldn’t tell fantasy from reality. He drained more than half the glass, set it down, and sighed, tilting his head back. That was my cue—no conversation was possible now. I wanted out of this filth and decadence. When I saw him once more gripping an omega’s hair like a tool, I flashed back to the moment he’d nearly throttled me.Gooseflesh crawled over me. What had I risked coming here for? Nothing mattered more than my life.I stepped back hesitantly—which only drew his attention.“…Chrissy Jin.”He frowned, then blinked. His eyes sharpened, focusing on me at last. Damn it. Swallowing a curse, I wavered. But in that instant, he snapped fully awake. He shook his head like a wet dog, then looked at me. I could see his wits returning. He glanced at the omega still servicing him, then yanked it away by its hair. It collapsed limply to the floor. I hastily averted my gaze. Nathaniel ignored it, staggered to his feet, and smoothed his trousers.“I asked why you came.”His words were slurred, his tone still sluggish—but he was back in reality. I couldn’t turn and leave, so I forced myself to speak.“I—I came to discuss the claim… but you seem busy. I’ll return another time. Should I leave a message with someone outside?”“Wait.”I started to bow and step back, but his voice stopped me. I should’ve pretended not to hear and kept walking. Too late now. I turned back. He stood there, watching.“You came all this way—talk now, Prosecutor. I’m not busy.”
