Witch, Fireball and the Evil God of Steam

Chapter 242: Red Pill and Blue Pill_2

Ding Lingguang Lang's voice interrupted their thoughts, and the slogans on the bookshelf changed.

The slogan "Old Sen's Miraculous Touch" disappeared, replaced by "It's getting late, please enjoy your meal," with the sounds coming from deeper within the library. The air was filled with the aroma of food as they followed the source of the sound, several rows of bookshelves temporarily removed. It seemed as though a red carpet was laid upon a floor floating in the void, guiding them to a square table laden with a sumptuous feast.

The table was also filled with bread and fine wine, along with a dazzling array of meats, comparable to the imperial court banquets of the capital.

The candlelight on the square table emitted a warm glow.

In this desolate library, they encountered their first living being—a butler dressed in a tailcoat with horns on his head, accompanied by a slender tail, clearly marking his demonic identity.

During the trial of courage, Ethan had encountered many similar demons.

It had yellow pupils and spoke elegantly, "Welcome to you both, my name is Behemoth, one of the high-level demons created by the master."

Among all the creations of the Old Gods, demons were the most humanoid race.

In hindsight, this seemed to imply a special bond between Sincaro and its ancestors.

"In the future, I will be fully responsible for both of your lives here. If you need anything, you can ask me at any time."

Behind Behemoth was a temporarily set up counter that appeared to be the work area belonging to the librarian.

"Do not accept food of unknown origin."

The Lindong Witch warned cautiously.

She wasn't worried about Sincaro poisoning the food; it likely contained something even worse than poison.

Previously, someone had stealthily spiked Ethan's wine at a court banquet.

The identity of the one who did it was irrelevant; what mattered was that Ethan needed to heighten his vigilance—especially now, with substitute literature so prevalent, the Old Gods might be plotting against him at any time.

"Rest assured, the master holds no malice towards you both."

Behemoth heard Lindong's warning and showed a gentle smile, unbecoming of a demon.

But what truly caught Ethan's attention was another keyword mentioned by the demon butler, "What does future life refer to?"

Until now, Sincaro had not revealed its intentions.

This trial of wisdom had no rules for victory; it had simply opened up many permissions.

"You both can settle down here, although it temporarily seems uninhabitable, you can transform it into your desired home at any time."

"But we don't intend to settle here."

In response to Ethan's skepticism, Behemoth merely smiled, "We have plenty of time, you can sit down and eat while we talk. I will do my best to answer all your questions, as it is my duty."

An untamed wilderness awaiting cultivation, a butler to aid them in pioneering.

This relaxing building game's atmosphere felt somewhat odd to Ethan.

"Mr. Ethan, excuse my imprudence, I've investigated you before."

Once the two were seated, Behemoth gracefully laid out napkins for them, saying, "Your initial plan was to join the Reception Bureau and be assigned to a more leisurely department at the main office, but too many things happened later, completely disrupting your plans, didn't they?"

Ethan did not deny it; everything Behemoth said was true.

He was once a working man, with 'idle eating, waiting for death' being his ultimate goal.

But plans couldn't keep up with changes; his ultimate dream was shattered by Pope Julius himself, and his life's ultimate aspirations veered into the unknown.

However, after the trip to Ophira, Ethan rekindled hope.

He grew increasingly interested in magic and in this world's unusual technological tree. Within his lifetime, he might witness this world evolve into the information age.

Regarding the quality of life and material standard, he still preferred modern society.

If he could merge his experiences from both worlds, it might be the ultimate state of life.

Behemoth's voice was light, like a lullaby reaching deep into his heart.

Perhaps this was an ability Sincaro endowed upon this high-level demon when it was created.

"Do not trust the demon's seduction."

Lindong didn't buy into it, satisfied with her current lifestyle, she believed Ethan must feel the same.

"And what about you, Miss Lindong Witch?"

Behemoth turned to her, "Your original intention was to seek revenge against the church and those who once defamed you. But now they are all dead, and the Empire familiar to you is progressing positively. You should have realized that even without you, the Empire could develop well... The cabinet system, Divine Attendant, 'Root,' and the removal of the church's ideological imprint, what you've done along the way is enough."

Behemoth seemed to know a lot of insider details, even including the existence of 'Root,' which had never been publicly announced.

Ethan suspected that they were dealing with an intelligence demon.

"So what?"

"Miss Lindong Witch, what do you truly want in life?"

Behemoth paused slightly, "Isn't it actually simpler than most people's thoughts? Maybe it's hard for them to imagine that a great Elemental Shaper like you, actually just wants to find a place to settle down with Mr. Ethan and live a stable life. Do you remember when you took Mr. Ethan to the northern cave where you once lived? What were you thinking at that time?"
