Kevin: "Nice idea, got any goals?"
Jimmy: "Yeah, I'd like to see if there are schools offering on-the-job learning, and then figure out how to proceed."
Kevin thought for a moment, "Anything else?"
Jimmy: "There's one more thing, Hughes reminded me the other day, if I had the chance to get involved with an association or foundation, it would be good for my future. I'm not sure how to go about that, might need some time to see how to establish an association or foundation."
Kevin: "No, you're misunderstanding. Hughes isn't suggesting you create an organization from scratch, but rather to secure a position in a reputable association or foundation. When you're moving to management or climbing up the ladder, these reputations will be your capital."
Jimmy: "That's not easy though. All the organizations are surely full, securing a noteworthy position won't be easy, right?"
Kevin took a sip of whiskey, "I'll check my schedule first."
Kevin walked to the desk, took out a small diary from his bag and started flipping through it, pacing around as he read. After a while, he closed the diary, returned to the sofa, "There's a club event coming up. I'll confirm and let you know, you can join me if possible."
Jimmy nodded, "Is it a formal event?"
Kevin nodded, "Dress formally by then."
Jimmy: "Okay, should Nia come along?"
Kevin shook his head: "No, just you and me. I'll introduce you to some people."
Jimmy nodded, picked up his glass and drank, "Thanks, Kevin. Cheers."
The future father-in-law is really supportive. This will be the first time attending an event with him, time to see what activities among the big shots are like.
-----------------
A calm week passed, Jimmy worked diligently, perhaps Peter handled it. OPR never came to trouble Jimmy, so the shooting and kidnapping suspect issue seems settled.
The new field operations head is Amanda Calaway, a blonde beauty, well, a bit dated beauty, looks like she's in her 40s, with loose shoulder-length hair, unlike other female agents who tie their hair up for a sharp look.
Probably normal, since she doesn't need to go out in the field, like Hughes, just handling things in the office, she doesn't need to be like the others.
She did well in her inaugural speech, seems ambitious to replace Rees Hughes, managing the field team her way, but seems many aren't interested.
So long, enough for everyone to understand how Hughes was driven out, plus bringing in a boss from Atlanta, it's clear gaining trust will be unrealistic in a short time.
None of this involves Jimmy; he didn't visit their office the whole week. Mrs. Mason arranged two instances to do school safety campaigns, not exhausting but good to be out.
Jimmy left work early in the afternoon, went home to freshen up and change into a suit, switched to a blue-purple diagonal striped tie, tidied up carefully, then drove to Kevin's place, waiting for the right time to pick up Kevin for the evening event.
Today Jimmy is the driver, the CLS is back after a round of refurbishing at the dealership, the whole car looks almost new, not bad.
Kevin: "Do you like Mercedes-Benz cars?"
Jimmy: "No specific preferences, just when I was changing cars, this one just hit the market, so I bought one, looks fine."
Kevin: "Well, no problem for daily use, but if you're switching next, go for a business model."
Jimmy: "Brand preference?"
Kevin: "Anything, just experience them yourself."
Jimmy: "Okay, I'll pick one."
Speaking from experience, Kevin's ride is a Cadillac, though Jimmy hasn't been in it, he knows the brand, probably suits his status.
He's just an FBI agent, doesn't seem time to switch to a business model, but since Kevin mentioned, might as well change, not lacking the money.
Kevin: "Tonight's event is a small charity auction, organized in part by the Caring Foundation for City Police, a local New York foundation mainly providing financial, material and mental support for officers in hardship and injured officer families, easing their difficulties.
This foundation is established by two club members. Although not hosted by the New York City Police Association, they've supported it, so many city officials and police department folks will be there, and some celebrities invited."
Jimmy: "Alright, do I need to participate in the auction?"
Kevin: "No, these auctions have somewhat fixed participants. I'm just here to endorse their event, they just need me for some photos.
Later I'll introduce some people to you, one of them is on the board of the New York University League, make an acquaintance, then consider what to do next."
Jimmy: "Is this regarding the further education thing I mentioned?"
Kevin: "Yes, but unclear at the moment, start by making contact."
Jimmy: "Thanks."
Arrived at the destination, an art gallery in Chelsea District, temporarily cleared of exhibits to set up for the charity auction.
At the gallery entrance, a red carpet stretched not too long, some banners and boards placed on the sides, printed with the logo and slogans of the Caring Foundation for City Police, displaying other auction organizers as well.
Jimmy stayed by Kevin's side, walked into the entrance, upon invitee checks entered the gallery, grabbed an event brochure, introducing the auction organizers and some auction items.
No time to look now, upon entering the exhibition area with Kevin, noticed quite a number of people present.
The venue mainly comprised exhibition, auction, and activity areas; the exhibition area is at the entrance, relatively large, auction items displayed around, including paintings and some aged items, each with detailed descriptions but no starting prices.
Inside the exhibition area is the auction section, chairs and podium neatly placed, but currently unoccupied.
Next to the auction area is the activity section, hard to see clearly but Jimmy could see quite a few people, some standing, others sitting, holding cups, presumably for social engagements, providing guests a chance to rest and socialize.
Kevin glanced around, pulling Jimmy: "Jimmy, you can check around here, it's still early."
Jimmy: "Alright, what about you?"
Kevin: "I'll head inside to greet some people, come back when more people arrive and I'll get you."
Jimmy: "Okay."
Kevin headed into the activity area, Jimmy began examining the auction items. Clearly, these aren't exceptionally rare, a few oil paintings and sketches, supposedly works of moderately famous artists, yet Jimmy's appreciation for art isn't high, unable to tell what's extraordinary.
One painting, "Landscape of Freedom," stood out, large size, would look nice in the living room. Rich colors, vast green fields and trees, with a mountain in the distance, snow on the peak adding depth, appeared pleasing to Jimmy. He dislikes portraits, but has some interest in landscapes.
Continuing to look, soon a hunting knife caught Jimmy's attention, handcrafted by ABS Bladesmith Association MS-level masters, Damascus patterned blade, about 15 cm long, sharpened, black micarta handle, brass guard, alligator leather sheath, the knife felt impressive.
Unfortunately, Kevin said he couldn't participate in auctions today, let's see the auction price later, might look for an MS bladesmith to craft one someday.
One item after another reviewed, few appealing, only a gemstone necklace drew interest for auction participation, a pendant of ruby, emerald, and black gemstones appeared quite nice, unsure if Nia would be interested.
Jimmy took a photo with his phone, will ask her later.
