North America Gunman Detective

Chapter 563: Riddlemasters All Around (Part 3)

Arriving at Hughes' house, only he was home. Hughes asked Jimmy to sit down as he went to make coffee.

Hughes came over with two cups of coffee and placed them on the coffee table. "Is everything fine with Peter? No injuries, right?"

Jimmy nodded, "Yesterday's incident has been resolved; Peter and the others are all fine. The two kidnappers were not entirely sane. Still, it was bad luck for them to encounter such a thing, and Peter's gun was in his bag, not on him—he was too relaxed."

Hughes: "I can understand. I've been asking him to take over Ruiz's position for years now, to switch roles a bit and gain more experience, but he's always refused. He's been handling white-collar and art cases for years—it's still not enough; he lacks sensitivity for other cases."

Jimmy couldn't respond, as the bosses' remarks often gave him a headache.

Hughes didn't wait for Jimmy to respond. He took a sip of coffee and sighed, "Peter is smart, capable, resourceful, and has good EQ. He gets along well with everyone—what a pity."

Jimmy: "Will this time be hard to get over?"

Hughes nodded, "Some people don't want us to have it too easy."

Jimmy: "Will management be involved?"

Hughes: "Possibly. Anyway, let's not talk about this. What did you come to say this time?"

Jimmy chuckled, "Haha, nothing much. I just got a warning last night to stay put and not wander around, so I came over to get a cup of coffee."

Hughes: "Mason? No, that's not right. Dave?"

Jimmy nodded, and Hughes said, "Looks like things are decided for now. I was planning to transfer you back soon, but we'll have to wait a bit."

Jimmy: "You guys always talk in riddles, while I'm clueless and have no idea what you're talking about."

A slight smile appeared on Hughes' face, "Not knowing isn't a bad thing. This matter doesn't really concern you; you'd need to be at Peter's level to be involved."

Jimmy: "Can you tell me a bit? Even a little would do. You always make me feel like my IQ is not enough—being confused is troublesome."

Hughes: "Higher positions are limited. If some people want more, others have to step aside, but that would make many people uncomfortable. Don't think too much about it. It might take five or ten years before it's a concern for you. You're still too young now. By the way, if you return to the field, where would you like to go?"

Jimmy: "I don't have any particular thoughts; I'm fine with going anywhere."

Hughes: "Well, don't follow Peter's example too much. Spend some time in different teams and get familiar."

Jimmy nodded, "I don't mind. It would take me at least another decade or so to reach your position; I'm only thirty, so there's plenty of time."

Hughes slightly furrowed his brow, and Jimmy's words seemed to give him an idea. He held up a hand to stop Jimmy and sipped his coffee while pondering something.

After a while, Hughes put his empty cup on the coffee table and looked at Jimmy, "Jimmy, are you interested in changing places?"

Jimmy blinked, a bit surprised, "What are you saying?"

Hughes: "We'll talk about this later. By the way, I might go to the FBI's Agent Association in a few days to do a part-time job."

Jimmy: "Ah, congratulations! Where will you be going? Headquarters, branch, or division?"

Hughes: "It's not decided yet; I'll let you know once it's confirmed."

Jimmy: "Alright. If you really go there, can I expect a commemorative badge soon? Hahaha."

Hughes: "You? Wait a few more years; you're not qualified yet. If you get the chance, start a small association or fund to improve your profile—it'll be beneficial for your future."

Jimmy: "I understand. I'll look into handling it later."

Hughes nodded, "When is your wedding?"

Jimmy: "We haven't set an exact date yet, but it should be in March or May; there are still a few months to go."

Hughes: "Right, get married soon. A married man is more stable and often more reliable."

After discussing the main things, only some casual chat topics remained. Jimmy finished his coffee and then said goodbye, returning to the office.
