North America Gunman Detective

Chapter 540: Investigation (Part 2)

Emily left Manhattan after driving around and arrived at a mechanic shop in Brooklyn. She drove the car directly into the shop and parked it deep inside, "Benny, help me."

Benny initially just saw a car drive in, got up, and walked over slowly. Hearing Emily's words, he immediately ran to the entrance, looked around, partially closed the door, and ran back to the car. Emily had already opened the car door and got out, but she looked extremely weak, with her back covered in blood.

Perhaps because she had reached a safe place, Emily relaxed, and her whole body suddenly went limp and collapsed. Fortunately, Benny reached her quickly and caught her.

Benny shouted to the two mechanics nearby, "Guys, clean it up." Then he supported Emily into an office-cum-lounge, pushed open a secret door, where there was a dark room.

He turned on the light and swept everything off the table with his arm, allowing Emily to lie down.

Then he took out a large medical kit, opened it, and immediately ran out to wash and disinfect his hands. He put on surgical gloves and a mask from the kit, picked up scissors to cut open her clothes, and began examining her gunshot wounds.

He checked two bullet holes; fortunately, it seemed the bullets were slowed by obstacles, so the cavitation effect wasn't severe, and there was still hope.

Benny took out pre-loaded anesthetic from the kit and administered it to Emily. Before it took effect, he had already started with the scalpel.

Benny was clearly not new to dealing with gunshot wounds. Despite the inadequate environment, he quickly examined Emily's wounds, incising the area nearby to perform emergency work internally. His actions were swift and steady, more like a battlefield medic than a regular hospital doctor.

Outside, a mechanic came to the dark room's entrance and shouted to Benny, "Cleaned up."

Benny didn't turn around, "Notify Mrs. Perkins, also inform the family."

Mechanic: "All of them?"

Benny: "Yes, let them judge for themselves."

The mechanic came to a desk, opened a drawer where there was a row of phones. He picked one up, pressed the recorded number inside, and after connecting, said, "Emily's been shot," and then hung up, continuing to dial other numbers.

By the time Perkins arrived, Emily had already received emergency treatment and was now undergoing a blood transfusion.

Perkins looked at Emily lying in the dark room and asked, "How is she?"

Benny was tidying up the dark room, speaking without looking up, "6 hours, you must arrange for her to go to a hospital for a full operation. I haven't completed all the treatments, just temporarily saved her; the conditions here are limited. You have to figure it out."

Perkins: "6 hours, got it."

Perkins took her phone, left the room, and started making calls outside.

Perkins closed the call and walked towards the dark room, "Royal Peaks Hospital, Dr. Derek Harper, he's arranging the operating room now."

Benny: "Who will take her there?"

Perkins: "You all will take her, remember the number."

Benny: "I need an ambulance, otherwise it's too conspicuous, too exposed."

Perkins: "You'll figure it out, the time should be enough."

Benny sighed, "Alright, we might lose a line, just be prepared, people from back home might come over."

Perkins: "Let them come to find me."

Benny waved his hand, "Alright, you don't need to watch here, go."

Perkins came to the yard of the mechanic shop, looked at the car she drove, and said to a nearby mechanic, "Get me another car, this one can't be used."

Mechanic: "Only that F150 can be used."

Perkins slapped the roof of the car hard, "Alright, I'll take it."

She pulled a box and two bags from the trunk into the pickup and drove away from the mechanic shop.

Jimmy and Mahong investigated the people around the parking lot, having them identify what the cars that left the parking lot at that time looked like. The NYPD had already coordinated to retrieve surveillance footage from nearby intersections. They directly accessed the surveillance footage on-site, confirmed the car models, and finally identified two suspicious vehicles.

Having confirmed the clues, it was then a matter of arranging personnel to track and verify. Half an hour later, they found a bloodstained car with the murdered driver found in the trunk.

Based on the driver's head gunshot wound and the blood in the trunk, as well as the blood dripping on the ground, it could be determined that the driver likely wasn't dead before. The gunman had probably shot again when switching cars here to prevent revealing their identity.

The NYPD K9 squad also arrived at the scene, but they had no success. The K9s lost the trail completely after leaving the parking lot; there was no choice, New York's environment was too complex. Though the dogs had strong senses of smell, the road scents were too disruptive.

Busy until dusk, Jimmy and his team still had no results; NYPD resources couldn't be infinitely drawn. Kevin's side was accommodating, but so much occurs daily in New York that patrol officers had to continue their duties and shifts, so only two patrol cars, four patrol officers, and Chuck and several detectives continued the investigation, of course including Mahong and David.

At night, when everyone was about to give up, Chuck's phone rang. After taking the call, he immediately went to Jimmy, "Jimmy, there's a lead. A fire truck had issues, its radio's position is by the road, but the truck isn't there, and two firefighters are missing."

Jimmy's eyes lit up, "What about the fire truck's response position and disappearance point?"

Chuck: "Brooklyn."

Jimmy: "Immediately contact all hospitals, confirm whether they admitted any gunshot or car accident patients, and it's best to check their operating room usage, particularly whatever temporary surgery arrangements were made."

Chuck: "Think this through, it's too big a commotion, there are too many hospitals we can't possibly summarize all information in a short time."

Jimmy: "Do your best, prioritize Brooklyn."

Chuck: "Alright, I'll arrange it, but don't expect any leads tonight, better rest first."

Jimmy nodded and called to Mahong and others nearby, "Mahong, David, thanks, we'll call it a day."

Mahong: "You sure? It's still early."

Jimmy: "Chuck's arranging the hospital investigation, it's quite an undertaking, no info likely tonight."

Chuck interjected, "The main issue is a missing fire truck and two firefighters, with the truck's radio dismantled, that's a big problem too."

Jimmy: "So, let NYPD handle it first. Everyone worked hard, let's go have a drink."

Chuck: "OK, wait for me a bit."

Perkins drove the pickup to Queens, parked in front of a detached house, unloaded the box from the car, took out a key to open the door, entered, turned on the light, and checked each room, finally feeling relieved.

This was a safe house Perkins arranged herself, usually not used. This time, their mechanic shop base might be compromised, plus the attitude of the InterContinental Hotel was unclear, so she used her trump card.

The initial plan for tonight was to take out Jimmy, but now with Emily injured, and the FBI and NYPD investigations, she had lost track of Jimmy's movements. The plan had to be canceled, and she'd look into whether Jimmy returned to his apartment around midnight before making further plans.

The plan was still feasible, but just as she finished resting and was about to leave, she suddenly received a phone call, "Emily got caught."
