Jimmy returned to the restaurant. He had seen Mahong's call earlier and thought it was urgent, so he didn't dare to answer it directly at his seat. Now it seemed everything was going smoothly. Mahong's weak spot was his family; as long as that weakness didn't exist, he could act more freely.
James and Mary were very satisfied with today's dinner, and Jimmy was finally at ease. Choosing Chinese cuisine was a bit of a gamble for him, since, back in Little Rock, he rarely dined with James and Mary at restaurants and was unsure of their tastes. Even when he occasionally ate Chinese food, it was usually fast food.
Coming to New York this time, he naturally hoped to gain their approval. French and Italian cuisines were too mainstream and uninteresting, so he opted for Cantonese, the most widely accepted Chinese cuisine in the United States.
Afterwards, Jimmy sent James and Mary back to the hotel. The Upper West Side of Manhattan was reasonably safe at night, but it was still advisable not to go out. A daytime stroll was sufficient.
Over the weekend, Jimmy and Nia accompanied James and Mary to Nia's home. Nia's parents were at home, but her grandfather and uncle weren't there, which was good because too many people could be bothersome.
Jimmy and Nia just made some introductions and were then told to go wherever they liked, as long as they weren't underfoot. In fact, upon learning that James was a former county police chief, Nia's father, Kevin Miller, was visibly surprised and spoke much more than when Jimmy had visited before.
That's fine; both men were in law enforcement — one a retired chief and the other a deputy director. They certainly had plenty of mutual topics of interest, leaving no room for awkward silence.
Jimmy and Nia didn't have anywhere specific to go, so they just decided to catch a movie. After all, waiting for news at home or outside was the same.
When Jimmy and Nia returned to her house in the evening, James and Kevin, the high-ranking police officials, were drinking and chatting in the study, while Mary and Nia's mother were conversing in the living room, everything appeared harmonious.
After dinner, Jimmy headed back with James and Mary, while Nia stayed home.
James: "Jimmy, the date has been set. The engagement ceremony will be in a month, organized by Kevin. You should start preparing. The invitation cards need to be ready and distributed in the coming days."
Jimmy, while driving and watching the road traffic ahead: "No problem. Once it's confirmed, I'll get everything ready. What about you? Will you return to Little Rock for a while or stay here in New York?"
James: "We'll head back to Little Rock first. We've been away from home for several months; it'll be good to rest a bit. I'll come over earlier."
Jimmy: "That works. When are you planning to go back, so I can see you off?"
James: "No need. We've already made arrangements today, so we'll leave tomorrow. You don't have to worry about us."
Jimmy: "In such a hurry? At least let me take you to the airport."
James: "Alright, then tomorrow at noon."
Jimmy: "No problem, I'll pick you up from the hotel then."
James and the others, being older, had little interest in city tourism. Jimmy completely respected their wishes. Since James wanted to go back, they should go back early.
On the next day, Jimmy took James to the airport but didn't return home directly. Instead, he went to the InterContinental Hotel. Handing the car keys to the valet at the entrance, Jimmy entered the hotel and approached the front desk.
A new guy at the front desk slightly bowed and asked, "Welcome to the InterContinental Hotel, how can I assist you?"
Jimmy: "Is Charon here? Tell him it's Jimmy."
The front desk clerk said, "Please hold on." He gestured to a man in a black suit nearby to take over, then headed to the back of the hotel.
Soon, the Black guy Charon came out from the back, with the earlier front desk attendant following him. Charon approached Jimmy, gestured him inside, and said, "Welcome, Mr. Yang, let's chat inside."
Jimmy nodded and followed Charon to a small meeting room inside. After sitting down, he said, "Charon, thank you for the gift earlier."
Charon: "No need to be so formal. Is there something I can do for you this time, Mr. Yang?"
Jimmy: "How are that mother and son doing?"
Charon: "They were arranged to be sent to Chicago this morning, and they're doing fine."
Jimmy: "Thanks for that. By the way, Justin brought a large sum of money to the hotel for me, it should be enough to cover this service. Just deduct it directly."
Charon: "I will, and would you like me to send the rest of the money to you?"
Jimmy: "I'd prefer if you didn't. Given my identity, having that much cash is difficult to explain."
Charon: "No problem, I'll handle it."
Jimmy: "Thanks, there are some things I really can't do conveniently. Alright, I'm done here, please give my regards to Winston."
After Jimmy spoke, he stood up, and Charon also stood up, buttoning his suit jacket, saying, "I will, please."
Charon escorted Jimmy out of the hotel. A valet had already brought the car around. Jimmy always found it remarkable how, as soon as he and Charon finished their meeting, someone would notify the valet to bring the car, ensuring it was waiting when he reached the entrance.
Jimmy shook hands with Charon to say goodbye, took the car keys, and was about to get in when Charon's phone rang. After taking the call, he stopped Jimmy, saying, "Mr. Yang, please wait a moment, the manager would like you to come up for some tea and a chat."
Jimmy blinked, handed the car keys back to the valet, and followed Charon back into the hotel. They took the elevator to Winston's room. Sure enough, Charon hadn't been exaggerating — Winston was there cleaning the tea set, though his motions revealed a lack of practice.
Jimmy: "Hi, Winston."
Winston: "Jimmy, please have a seat."
Jimmy sat across from Winston, "Making tea? Want me to give it a shot?"
Winston immediately withdrew, "You might as well take over."
Jimmy laughed, took over, and began by boiling water, organizing the teacups and fairness cup, and scalding everything with boiling water.
Winston: "Jimmy, I hear you're getting married soon?"
Jimmy: "I just got engaged, and there might be an engagement ceremony soon. Could you come? I'm planning to send out invitations once the date is confirmed."
Winston: "We'll pass, considering your father-in-law is the NYPD Deputy Director, it's best not to meet. However, I could gift you and your fiancée something. I've arranged for someone to handle your outfits, so you can get fitted and select styles next week."
Jimmy raised his eyebrows, "Isn't that a bit excessive? It's just an engagement ceremony, not a wedding."
Winston: "Engagements are significant, too."
Jimmy boiled water again, placed tea leaves in the fairness cup, rinsed the tea, warmed the cups, and smoothly brewed the tea before pouring a cup for each of them, "Here you go."
Winston: "I'm not quite accustomed to this flavor yet."
Jimmy chuckled, "It's normal not to be used to clear tea, especially green tea. Most drinks we usually consume have stronger flavors. This subtle aroma with a hint of bitterness can be quite nice occasionally."
Winston: "Right. By the way, I asked you over to confirm something. I saw news about you, so, is your side planning to push you into the public eye?"
Jimmy looked at Winston, whose expression remained serious, with no visible sign of emotion, "Yes, there's that intention. Since an unexpected event occurred, I've been transferred from the field department to the Ministry of Internal Affairs. They might think I have time now, so I may participate in future public press conferences and such."
Winston: "Oh, if that's the case, it will require being more conscious of your movements."
Jimmy nodded, "I understand. Since you're not public, as long as there's no pressing issue, I'll try to make fewer public visits to you."
Winston: "Oh, that's not an issue. We can handle many things. It's just that if you're a public figure, certain matters become inconvenient."
Jimmy: "There's nothing I can do about it. Sometimes leadership decisions can't be refused. But I think some issues can be considered later, as it's not truly public yet."
Winston nodded, and Jimmy poured another cup of tea, distributing it into Winston's and his own cup.
(Considering the subsequent plot, updates will be daily from now on, with an extra update for Waterman Alliance Head coming soon as well.)
