North America Gunman Detective

Chapter 687: 434 presenting a platter

Jimmy nodded, "I understand."

Hughes, "OK, that's basically it. Before we find Josh, we'll have to put this attack case on hold. Don't spend too much time on this, deal with other cases instead."

Jimmy, "Hughes, can you give me a copy of the recording?"

Hughes, "I've already arranged for someone to look into his identity, there's no need for you to get involved."

Jimmy, "I won't do anything, Hughes, trust me. If I were going to investigate, I would tell you in advance."

After thinking for a while, Hughes copied the recording to the computer and returned the USB to Jimmy.

Jimmy, "Is there anything else?"

Hughes shook his head, Jimmy, "Then I'll head back first, goodnight, Hughes."

-----------------

Jimmy drove away from Hughes' house; this matter had gotten a bit complicated, and he needed to carefully think it over and straighten out the twists and turns that had developed over these days; too many things had happened, requiring a good sorting to clearly understand how the timeline here was arranged.

There was also Ruiz, as Hughes had already mentioned, Ruiz had been dealing with the mole during this period. It could be said that next to Hughes, Ruiz was the most deeply involved.

Checking the time and seeing it wasn't too late, Jimmy drove while calling Ruiz to meet for a drink.

Such impromptu calls to go out for drinks were rare for Jimmy, fortunately, Ruiz seemed not to be at home as the background noise over the phone was somewhat noisy; turning a corner should be fine. Ruiz didn't decline, but he needed Jimmy to wait a bit longer.

Jimmy parked in the parking lot and walked to the bar; the bar was still crowded, and his favorite spot in front of the bar was surprisingly full.

Jimmy stood at the corner of the bar and knocked on the counter, "Woody, get me a drink."

With a drink in hand, Jimmy went to a small round table near the corner, waiting for Ruiz. After more than half an hour, Ruiz finally arrived; Jimmy raised his hand to wave, making sure he saw him before waiting here. Ruiz also brought over a drink.

Ruiz, "You really pick the times, huh? Come on, what's up, why did you call me here?"

Jimmy looked around, shifted his chair to sit next to Ruiz, "I went to Hughes' house tonight. He told me about the mole and my OPR investigation; you should know about this, right?"

Ruiz nodded; he wasn't much of a talker. Although these matters involved Jimmy, Hughes clearly had not wanted Jimmy to handle it, so he had always kept the secrets, never telling Jimmy.

Jimmy, "Is there anything I should know?"

Ruiz took a sip of his drink, contemplating what to say. Since he had not been part of Jimmy and Hughes' conversation, he didn't know how much Jimmy was aware of, "What specifically do you want to know?"

Jimmy, "Who initiated the OPR investigation on me?"

Ruiz shook his head, "What we can confirm is that OPR's Derek started the investigation on you after receiving a tip from a middleman, but he did not conduct it himself. Instead, after speaking with Agent Fuller, he let Fuller lead the investigation on you."

Jimmy, "Is Fuller a suspect?"

Ruiz, "No, from what has been investigated, Fuller doesn't seem suspect. I suspect he took on your case to handle more cases, even going as far as requesting the case from Derek knowing he was investigating you. It wouldn't negatively impact him if nothing was found, so why not do it?"

Jimmy widened his eyes, "I don't have any grudge with Fuller, so why target me?"

Ruiz shrugged, "They're OPR, destined to hit their own kind if they want to climb the ladder and get a raise. I guess you're just unlucky, just happened to be free now, and since Hughes applied for your promotion, it required an internal investigation. Anyway, it's all cases, a job well done on any is a feather in his cap, and if nothing is found, it won't affect him, so why not do it?"
