Ruiz was a bit surprised when he heard the news. When Jimmy had contacted him to find Serra, he had thought it was just the investigation phase. How had things suddenly been settled?
Fortunately, the mole had been caught, Azte's people had been dealt with, and the case of the attack on Jimmy had come to a close. The next step was to gather evidence and charge them.
Hughes wasn't as relaxed as Ruiz; he had contacted the intermediary Thomas during the day, but Thomas hadn't replied to him all day.
Previously, Thomas had agreed to move the mole, but now that the mole had been captured on his own, he hadn't yet taken action, giving Hughes a sense of foreboding.
Thomas had mentioned that it was Josh from Congressman Blair's camp who had asked him to meet with Hughes. Maybe this lead was worth investigating.
Dealing with a state congressman wasn't easy; the FBI certainly could do a lot, but without direct evidence at hand, linking the backstage players was not going to be easy.
-----------------
The next day, Jimmy received some good news. Among the people with Serra, one person's pistol had rifling that matched the bullets fired from the motorcycle that attacked him. There was the direct evidence they needed. The individual who had attacked Jimmy on the street had been caught, and according to the fingerprints on the gun, it was one of the two men who had died. Jimmy had finally avenged himself.
Mahong and his team were very busy now. The four people captured still needed questioning. With Serra cooperating with Azte's people, there must have been someone pulling the strings, and now the task was to dig that person out.
Serra had been shot, but he hadn't died. The four were taken to the hospital and all were revived, but they had lost too much blood and were only temporarily out of danger, requiring hospital observation. This meant their interrogation had to be postponed.
With some downtime, Mahong began investigating another bomb maker, Ashraf Rassimi, who had received training with El in bomb making.
Although there was no definite evidence yet that Ashraf Rassimi was continuing to make bombs, he was still considered a potential threat. It was best to take the opportunity to investigate and handle any hidden danger beforehand.
Ashraf Rassimi had entered the United States legally. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the United States dominated, so during that period, people from various nations came to the United States to successfully enter, work, obtain green cards, and become citizens. It might seem incredible that Iraqis were entering, but it was indeed normal.
The system recorded that Ashraf's currently registered residence was in a cheap house in the suburbs of Newark, New Jersey, close to New York. He had no prison record, no criminal records—utterly clean, the epitome of a model citizen. Who would imagine such a person could make bombs?
After checking the system's ID photo, Mahong printed his information, intending to contact the Newark office to have them investigate on-site.
Speaking of Newark, Jimmy actually knew someone there—the senior agent he had met at the Jersey City Police Department.
Mahong handed the information to Jimmy, "Contact Newark for me, ask them to look into this Ashraf. Keep it discreet, don't alarm him."
Jimmy nodded, took out his phone, and left the office heading towards a nearby conference room. This type of communication was better handled privately. Agent Riley was also dealing with two explosions that had occurred in their area; maybe this was a lead.
Jimmy: "Riley, I've got some good news to tell you."
Riley: "What is it?"
Jimmy: "El from the prison supplied the name of someone he had trained with in bomb-making, yeah, the same El you met last time."
Riley: "Great, I've been to see him twice before, and came up empty. Go on."
Jimmy: "Ashraf Rassimi, an Iraqi-American, he lives in the suburbs of Newark."
Riley raised his voice, "The suburbs of Newark? Are you serious?"
Jimmy: "Hm? Is there a problem?"
Riley: "The place where the explosion happened the other day is in a house in the suburbs."
Jimmy was speechless. "Really? What a coincidence! Check to see if it's Ashraf's address." Jimmy reported the address from the printed material.
Riley: "I'll contact you in a moment."
Jimmy hung up the phone and stayed in the conference room to wait for Riley's call, confident that it wouldn't take long to confirm the news. About fifteen minutes later, Riley's call came through.
Riley: "Jimmy, it's confirmed. The address is correct. The identities of the two deceased on the scene hadn't been confirmed because the system lacked Ashraf's fingerprints, and the two dead had no IDs on them. Now we can probably confirm that one of them was Ashraf."
Jimmy: "Has the cause of the explosion been determined?"
Riley: "It's been confirmed. It looks like they accidentally triggered an electronic detonator. The positions where the two died were in different rooms from the bomb, but since the house was wooden, it didn't block the force of the explosion. After the explosion, the house caught fire, and both of them were burned beyond recognition."
Jimmy: "That's troublesome. It looks like you've got your work cut out for you, needing to confirm identities and determine the source of the bomb materials."
Riley sighed, "If it was just investigating the source, it would be nothing, but now I'm worried about why he was making bombs. Isn't living an honest life better? Could it be that the mastermind behind his previous escape has reconnected with him?"
Jimmy: "That's really unclear. You guys start the investigation. If you need my help, call me anytime."
Riley: "I will, thanks, Jimmy."
After hanging up, Jimmy went back to his office and synced up with Mahong. Hughes had arranged for Jimmy to go to Newark to support this explosion case. Although Jimmy never reached the scene, he still managed to secure essential clues about the bomb case. One could say, this case was somehow fated for Jimmy.
Speaking of which, Riley had tried to get El twice without success, while Mahong and his team managed to get the name after just two attempts at approaching El. Mahong truly has skills. Even in the operation to capture Serra, it was evident, although Mahong wasn't as strong as Jimmy in combat, he was still far better than many agents, with top-notch vigilance.
-------------
Two days later, finally, under doctor's confirmation, Serra and Azte could be brought back for interrogation.
Mahong took the lead as usual, with Jimmy and Ruiz standing outside the interrogation room. Ruiz was there because Jimmy had informed him. It was rare to capture Serra, so of course, they wanted to make the most of it. Ruiz also happened to have a bunch of files, and if they could handle Serra now, they might also clear up some historical cases.
Inside, they listened as Mahong bluffed Serra, from Jimmy handling the explosion case to his being attacked, the same as when they interrogated Carlos, the difference between gang retaliation and a terrorist attack. As a gang leader, Serra was more aware of the difference between a stint in prison and potentially ending up dead.
After a show of resistance, Serra gave in: "Azte's second in command, Tim Spike, he called me, asking me to provide shelter and transportation for their people. We have absolutely no connection with the explosion case. It was just a misunderstanding, merely a coincidence."
Mahong: "Whether it's a coincidence or not isn't for you to say. Now, explain everything from start to finish. I don't care about your other messes, but this attack was on an FBI Senior Agent during an active case, causing the investigation into the terrorist attack to be delayed. Whether or not you can get yourself out of this depends on what you say next."
Philicia opened her notebook beside him and began recording, while Serra cooperated fully, explaining all about his phone contact with Tim Spike, and how he assisted the four people from Azte who came afterwards. Sensing the gravity of the situation, even through his discomfort, wasn't it better to stay alive?
After Mahong finished the interrogation, he took the interrogation records and left the detention room, looking at Ruiz outside, "Do you want to continue?"
Ruiz nodded, "Let him rest for a few minutes, and I'll get ready."
