North America Gunman Detective

Chapter 676: 430 The insider spy is caught

While Jimmy and his team were busy confirming that the gunman was Azte's man, Hughes's side also didn't stop investigating the mole.

The mole had gone too far this time, and the coincidence was too striking, since Jimmy had just switched to a new assigned vehicle and was immediately targeted. Thus, the mole's activity was restricted to a very narrow time frame. Mahong was right; the underlying system data could indeed pinpoint who accessed Jimmy's information.

Hughes still had resources he could use. A few phone calls later, he quickly obtained permission. The technical department at DC headquarters also got permission and began filtering massive amounts of data on Hughes's request.

The FBI's system logs were quite comprehensive. By directly querying Jimmy's information logs, they ascertained which account made the query, a task that didn't take much time. However, when they submitted the account and read out the account's user for Hughes, a big problem arose.

Hughes called Ruiz to his office, "Derek Hunt, a Senior Agent at OPR. The system shows he accessed Jimmy's information after clocking in, and he also read the GPS information corresponding to Jimmy's assigned vehicle's license plate."

Ruiz also had a headache. If it were a field agent, it would have been easier to deal with, but OPR didn't fall under field operations, and Hughes's side had no jurisdiction over them.

After some thought, Ruiz looked at Hughes, "Are we sure we want to do this?"

Hughes nodded, and Ruiz understood Hughes's idea. He nodded back and left Hughes's office.

Ruiz arranged for a reliable subordinate to watch Derek's movements and stopped Derek's private car outside after work. Ruiz didn't do anything particularly excessive, merely revealing his gun outside the car, which made Derek compliantly open the car door and disarm, allowing Ruiz to get in the vehicle.

In the bureau, Ruiz was a well-known figure. The person in charge of the Organized Crime Group was no pushover. How could someone from OPR not recognize him? Facing Ruiz's approach, Derek didn't resist much and instead drove to an unpopulated construction site under Ruiz's direction, since it was after hours and the workers had already left.

Ruiz's car was driven by his subordinate, who also followed them to the site. Derek and Ruiz got out of their cars and walked into the building.

Derek, "Ruiz, can you tell me now? What is it that you want by bringing me here?"

Ruiz, "Put your gun on the ground."

Derek didn't resist. He took the holster off his belt, placed it on the ground, and kicked it away with his foot. Although he too had been trained, he was no match for a field agent like Ruiz. To resist with a gun would probably end in tragedy.

Derek, "You realise that what you're doing now is a serious violation of the bureau's regulations, right?"

Ruiz nodded, "I know. So, do you know why I'm here for you?"

Derek, "I'm waiting for you to tell me."

Ruiz, "Sit down. I think we have plenty of time to talk about this issue. Who's behind you?"

-----------------

Ruiz's side was conducting an unauthorized interrogation of Derek, while Hughes was also under a great deal of pressure. Although no one yet knew that Derek was taken away by Ruiz, by tomorrow morning, OPR would notice Derek's disappearance, which would then trigger a bunch of other issues.

After work, Hughes stayed in his study at home, even eating there, as he waited for Ruiz's response.

It wasn't until the early morning hours, after Hughes had gone to bed, that his phone finally rang. Ruiz simply said it was taken care of and then ended the call, allowing Hughes to rest easy.

The next morning, Hughes arrived at the bureau early, communicated with several supervisors and a deputy director, and only then finally notified Ruiz to start the arrest.

When Jimmy called, Ruiz was carrying out the arrest operation. They were going after the names Derek provided, including two bureau agents. To avoid scaring the targets, Ruiz's team went silent after assembling, with all operatives drawn from field agents.

The two agents were arrested smoothly as they came into the bureau as usual, one in the office and one in the parking lot.

The liaison proved to be more of a hassle; they arrived at his place only to find it empty. According to his family, the liaison had left New York for some business, likely heading to Albany. Albany is the capital of New York State, not a large city with a population of just a few hundred thousand, but the state legislature and government-related institutions are located there.

To prevent any tip-offs, Ruiz temporarily detained the liaison's family, while they drove toward Albany. Meanwhile, Ruiz turned on his phone to ask Hughes to help pinpoint the liaison's car plate location, as well as his cell phone to determine his whereabouts, which would help them quickly complete the arrest once they reached Albany.

Only after the call did Ruiz notice Jimmy's missed calls and finally had the time to send a message back to Jimmy.

Ruiz, "Jimmy, is there something you need?"

Jimmy, "Are you on a mission? I couldn't get through earlier."

Ruiz, "There's an operation, we're on silent comms. What do you need?"

Jimmy, "Trinidad's Serra, I'm thinking of inviting him to the bureau. Will it affect your operation?"

Ruiz, "What's up?"

Jimmy, "The person who attacked me is Azte's, the transportation was provided by Trinidad."
