North America Gunman Detective

Chapter 660: Is 423 over?_2

It's not that Jimmy didn't want to dress more casually; the key was to cover the gun he was carrying. His choice of top was greatly limited, and the casual suit jacket was just right to conceal his holster.

Let's be honest: every time New York Fashion Week rolls around, Jimmy kind of wishes he could wash his eyes out. There are plenty of pretty girls on the streets, dressed very nicely, but you always get a few guys in weird and wacky outfits, and all sorts of performance art that really make people uncomfortable. Of course, there's a lot of fun to be had ogling the beauties while hanging out on the streets, and the number of homeless people hoping for some spare change also seems to increase accordingly.

Jimmy and Nia entered the show with their invitations and blended into the audience around the runway. The show was a success, and of course for Jimmy, it was mainly about watching the models. Sure, Nia by his side was pretty too, but who can control a man's eyes?

Nia's classmates finished their walk and changed clothes, coming from backstage to greet Jimmy and the others, before they all left together to grab some late-night snacks—or dinner, since these models couldn't eat just anything before a show in order to keep their figures.

Not eating any proper food for most of the day was normal for these models, but once the food was on the table, their previously reserved demeanor changed in an instant. Appetizers were quickly polished off, and after a sip of wine, they were back to their original state.

With Nia by his side, Jimmy didn't get a chance to be a flirt, which was really frustrating. That's why it's best not to bring a girlfriend when going out to have fun. In the end, Jimmy could only play the driver and drop them off, including Nia, who also had to go home. You can't just not go home during a three-day break, and just like that, he became a full-fledged chauffeur.

The OPR investigation had come to an end. On the afternoon of the fourth day, it was still Fuller who, holding the OPR report, found Hughes.

Fuller, "Hughes, our investigation is over, and I think you should take a look at this report."

Hughes took the report handed to him by Fuller and began reading. It was clear they had been thorough; every case Jimmy had worked on was marked. Obviously, this wasn't a job that could be done by just two or three people.

As for the cases involving classified information, they were marked as confidential, so they didn't get the details. The rest of the cases had comments, especially the ones Jimmy handled on his own.

The case reports were generally well-regarded. The only issue was the validity of the evidence Jimmy found while working on those cases by himself, but it didn't impact the outcome of the cases.

Hughes nodded. With the OPR report, Jimmy's application for promotion shouldn't have any more problems.

Hughes placed the report on the desk and looked up at Fuller. Fuller's attitude was very positive, "Jimmy has done a very good job with his cases. Congratulations Hughes, you've got another strong team member."

Hughes, "Is there anything else?"

Fuller, "No, goodbye Hughes."

Hughes watched Fuller leave, picked up the report again, tapped it twice in his hand, turned, and placed it on the bookshelf.

The shameless couple's world had come to an end; Nia had to go back to work a day earlier than Jimmy, who used the remaining day to rest properly. These past days were even more exhausting than work. He sprawled on the couch, popped open a can of cola, and watched some dull American TV series, and time just passed without meaning.

After some rest and when it was time to go back to work, Jimmy felt a bit out of sorts. He drove to the office in his suit in the morning, and for some reason, from the entrance to his office, everyone he passed greeted him. Jimmy felt he'd used up a month's worth of smiles on that one journey. If the distance had been any longer, his face might have cramped up.

What's going on? How had he suddenly become so famous? There were a few other Asian detectives in the department, but most of them were in technical positions. Although he wasn't very familiar with most of them, such enthusiastic greetings were still uncomfortable for him.

Jimmy entered the Homicide Team's office and first greeted his colleagues, "Good morning Mahong, Philicia."

Mahong looked up at Jimmy, "Morning Jimmy, how have the past few days been for you?"

Jimmy grinned broadly, "Great, it's rare to have such a long time to have fun with my girlfriend." This was like rubbing salt in Mahong's wounds; a big thing had happened, but nobody told him why, and these days it seemed like he was having a good time, but actually, he'd been feeling quite suffocated inside.

Mahong didn't seem to react much, just nodded, "Good to hear. Your due diligence investigation is over, so you can work without worries now."

Jimmy, "Do you know why they were investigating me?"

Mahong, "Not sure, OPR spoke directly with Hughes. They didn't go through us, just had some talks with us. If you want to know why, you can ask Hughes, but I can't guarantee you'll get an answer."

Jimmy's smile faded. Hughes was a deep thinker, and if he didn't feel like sharing, there really wasn't much to be done. Jimmy sat down at his desk, turned on his computer, and checked the list of recent cases to make sure there was nothing urgent, then continued with his dull routine.

During the lunch break, Jimmy went over to Ruiz's office to check on the status of Azte's case.

Ruiz, "Some bad news: of the six we sent to the hospital, three have died."

Jimmy groaned, "So that makes twelve now? No wonder OPR was giving me a hard time."

Ruiz shook his head, "Don't overthink it. Since the investigation is over, they won't be hounding you about that anymore. It's a blessing in disguise, I guess. At least from now on, if something similar happens, I don't think anyone will have any issues with it."

Jimmy, "I was actually hoping they would give me trouble. Wouldn't more administrative leave be nice? Paid leave, and sleeping in at home, is also rest."

Ruiz, "You? Don't count on it. With your track record, you'll probably be hoping for administrative leave in vain from now on."

Jimmy, "By the way, how's the investigation into Azte's operations going? Have you found their other warehouses and shipping routes yet?"

Ruiz shook his head, "Turns out we got the wrong guy; the boss here died in the shootout. Those who survived were only interrogated once. We'll interrogate them more once they're in better shape."

Jimmy, "Alright, well, with such a big haul this time, that's good enough. I suppose the department's coffers have been replenished quite a bit, huh? As long as there's a benefit."

Ruiz neither confirmed nor denied, and having clarified what he needed to know, Jimmy left Ruiz's office to go downstairs for lunch and a smoke.
