Jimmy left Karen's apartment and drove away in a car assigned to him, because there could be accidents on this outing, and it was better to leave his own car safely in the FBI garage.
While driving, Jimmy called Ruiz.
Jimmy, "Ruiz, are you in the office?"
Ruiz, "What's up?"
Jimmy, "Reliable tip-off. Found an Azte warehouse. Bring your team over, and remember to bring the forensics. I suspect they have already evacuated, but there definitely are clues left on the scene."
Ruiz was truly speechless; he knew every time Jimmy contacted him there was always something more, but he hadn't expected this 'more' to connect with previous incidents.
Ruiz, "Are the clues confirmed?"
Jimmy, "I am on my way to a mini warehouse in the southern part of the Bronx."
Ruiz, "Got it, I'm gathering the team and heading over. Wait for me when you get there."
Jimmy drove straight from Brooklyn, through Queens, to the Bronx, known as the most chaotic district in New York. It was normal for anything to happen here, where the police often preferred to show up after everything had ended, having the longest average response time of any district in New York.
Upon reaching the warehouse, Jimmy didn't enter; they didn't have a search warrant, making it difficult for Jimmy alone to handle the security. After waiting for about fifteen minutes, Ruiz arrived with his team. Although he hadn't mentioned it on the call, he evidently took this very seriously, judging by his arrival in five cars, whereas he had brought just two people last time during the minor drug dog incident at Woody's.
Ruiz, "Jimmy, have you gone in yet?"
Jimmy shook his head, "Waiting for you guys; I can't do this alone."
Ruiz, experienced as he was, first flashed his badge at the security, "Senior Agent Ruiz, FBI. Contact your manager to come here." Speaking to the security was futile; it was better to speak directly to the person in charge, which also allowed them to do something else in the meantime.
The security, intimidated by the team of FBI agents, promptly made the call, and soon, the warehouse manager arrived, suggesting he wasn't far from here.
"Senior Agent Ruiz, FBI," Ruiz announced his identity and then walked a few steps with the manager, away from the main group. After a brief chat, Ruiz gestured for the others to join them. The manager went to the security room, grabbed the keys, and led them to storage unit B26.
With a clatter, the rolling shutter door opened, revealing an empty warehouse with only two shelves left; the rest of the space was empty.
"Start by checking for fingerprints," Ruiz waved his hand, and his team entered the warehouse to investigate, while others started to read fingerprints at the lock of the shutter door.
Ruiz, "Jimmy, seems like the intel was wrong."
Jimmy raised an eyebrow, "The intel was accurate, but they realized a few days ago that someone had tampered with the warehouse. They likely decided to abandon it when they lost goods. It's not completely fruitless, though. You should be able to get the surveillance footage from that guy, right? With external surveillance and fingerprints, we can confirm a lot of things."
Ruiz nodded, "Yeah, there's always something to gain. If they really are Azte people, chances are they have records in the criminal database."
Jimmy chuckled, "Right, and here's another gift for you, that Mario Cole, he's the one who swept their warehouse. He probably has quite a few things on hand, you know."
Mario hadn't provoked Jimmy, so letting him go was fine since most of the stuff he handled was likely illicit, which couldn't be ignored. As Jimmy couldn't directly intervene, Ruiz handling it would be no problem.
Ruiz, "The Mario Cole that you came to me for information on?"
Jimmy, "Yeah, he's currently avoiding the Azte people." Jimmy carefully took out his notebook and pen, "He left his fingerprints on this, handle it. Oh, and he was at his ex-wife's place today but left. I don't know where he is now."
Ruiz nodded and bagged the notebook and pen. Mario had written down the warehouse address and number in this notebook, and along with the fingerprints, that was evidence. Jimmy had quietly set a trap for Mario; after he was arrested, this would be evidence for the prosecutor to use in charges. Fortunately, there wasn't anything else of import in Jimmy's notebook, so no significant loss.
Jimmy also briefly told Ruiz about Mario being attacked at home, indicating further need for his team to search Mario's home for evidence, particularly regarding whether the two attackers had left any clues.
Ruiz went to request surveillance footage from the manager, while Jimmy headed back to the office. He could slack off a bit now that he had handled part of this case; naturally, he had to return to his duties. As for the follow-up on this case, with Ruiz's years of experience as an agent, he knew exactly what to do. Handling this case well would not merit a small reward.
At the NYPD Detective Bureau, Chuck and Nia had already gathered a lot of information about Mario Cole. His ex-wife had, of course, been investigated too, so it was natural for Chuck to take over the case. With Jimmy's help from the FBI, the chances of resolving this case were very high—a real feather in their cap and a good opportunity for building up experience. There wouldn't be much advantage for Chuck, but Nia needed to crack some major cases to boost her career.
The office knew about the relationship between Nia and Jimmy, and seeing Chuck take over the case, everyone understood there was more to the story.
As the investigation deepened, Nia and her team quickly spotted Mario near his ex-wife's apartment from nearby surveillance footage. Since prior monitoring had shown Mario was the one being pursued, their actual target was the people chasing him, so they didn't arrest Mario but let him stay outside to lure the pursuers out.
