Jimmy: "Mr. Tulio Penelli?"
Penelli: "Agent Yang, what can I do for you?"
Jimmy: "Mr. Penelli, I assume you know every member of your team, right? Any recollection of Mario Cole?"
Penelli had been nodding but stopped abruptly at the mention of Cole's name. "I don't follow you."
Jimmy: "Last night, Mario Cole and a group of others were involved in a car chase and shooting, injuring many people. Where is he?"
Penelli's eyes narrowed. "Mario hasn't shown up for several days now; I'm not sure where he is at the moment."
Jimmy: "Let's not talk about that for now. I assume you know who I am, correct?"
Penelli nodded.
Jimmy continued, "This case hasn't come to me yet. I'm just doing a favor I couldn't refuse, but if the files are submitted to me... I'm sure you wouldn't want me to come looking for you a second time."
Penelli picked up a bottle of liquor and two glasses, poured a drink, and pushed one towards Jimmy.
Penelli: "Cole is being hunted. Four days ago, someone attacked Cole's home. He fought back and left the house, only showed up once after that, and hasn't contacted us since then."
Jimmy: "The reason for the attack?"
Penelli: "I don't know. Cole just came once, took some weapons and money, and left."
Jimmy: "His location?"
Penelli: "His ex-wife's apartment in Brooklyn, on Grace Street. It's the only place I know of where he could be."
Jimmy: "Thank you, Mr. Penelli." Jimmy picked up his glass, clinked it with Penelli's, drank the liquor, then set down the glass, buttoned up his coat, took his overcoat, and left the room.
Penelli surely wasn't telling the whole truth, but what he said was likely not entirely false. Investigating Cole's background was easy for Jimmy. Since it was an ex-wife, she would certainly have a record in the system unless they had never registered. Now the question was, who had attacked Cole? It must have been the people from the second car that evening.
Jimmy summoned Chuck and Nia, and the three of them left the bar. Nia got into Jimmy's car, and Chuck drove back on his own.
While driving, Jimmy told Nia about Cole's situation. Nia was a straightforward girl, needing to rest at home even on non-working days. Jimmy had no choice but to drive her home. Fortunately, Harlem is located just north of Upper East Side and Upper West Side, so it wasn't too far out of the way.
Jimmy parked outside Nia's apartment building. After a goodbye kiss, he got back into the car and drove away. Nia had just entered the lobby when she saw her father there by chance.
Of course, Jimmy had no idea what happened next. He drove straight home, going around Central Park. The case had been communicated to Nia and her team; with both sides investigating, someone was bound to solve it.
The next day, Jimmy returned to the FBI office early in the morning. There was still no news from Mahong, and it was unclear how their investigation was going. However, Jimmy wasn't currently interested in inquiring; his focus was on the Cole case.
Turning on the computer, the FBI's data was still very comprehensive. This was mainly because the FBI had data exchanges with various other systems. Compared to the independent data of various states, federal agencies like the FBI, ICE, DEA often had more convenience. Of course, accessing this data also meant having higher authorization.
Jimmy's previously granted temporary acting authority hadn't been revoked, so he could still look up some in-depth data.
Judging from the information besides what NYPD had on Mario Cole, Jimmy found additional details, including his past residences, family information, and even ex-wife Karen's details. Penelli hadn't lied, at least not about these pieces of information.
Jimmy took note of all the details, hopped into his assigned vehicle, and left the FBI office. He was pushing it a bit. He was supposed to be working, yet he was off doing something else.
Jimmy first headed to Mario Cole's ex-wife's place in Brooklyn. After a quick glance, he noticed two people in her apartment. The system showed that Karen hadn't remarried, so it was likely that one of them was Cole.
Jimmy knocked on the door; someone came to open it. "Karen Cole? FBI Special Agent Jimmy Yang."
Karen: "What can I do for you, Agent?"
Jimmy: "I'm here to see Mario. Could you please ask him to come out?"
Karen: "He's not here; we're divorced."
Jimmy: "Please have the person inside come out, thank you."
Karen: "There's only me here. Please stop harassing me or I'll call the police."
Jimmy: "I came alone, just to talk to Mario. If I have to come back, it won't be just me. Mario, please come out for a chat. There's no fire escape outside; you won't be able to get down."
As Jimmy saw the person inside preparing to jump out of the window, he raised his voice and shouted out.
Karen reached to close the door, but Jimmy pushed it to keep it open without letting her shut it. The person inside had already left the window area and moved to the living room.
Mario: "Karen, let him in."
Karen stepped aside, allowing Jimmy in. "You two talk." Karen closed the door behind them and went straight into the bedroom, closing the bedroom door behind her, removing herself from the conversation between Mario and Jimmy.
Jimmy: "Mario Cole, you're not easy to find. If it weren't for Mr. Penelli, I'd still be in the dark about your location."
As soon as Mario heard Penelli's name, he knew it wouldn't be simple. "Agent, what do you want with me?"
Jimmy: "Who were the people chasing and shooting with you the other night?"
Mario: "Do you have a recording?"
