Jimmy's plan to skip work didn't succeed. At 9 a.m., just when he was sound asleep, Hughes called: "Jimmy, come to my office later."
Jimmy, "Hughes, is it urgent? I just went through a night raid last night and had just lain down."
Hughes paused, "Alright, come over in the afternoon."
Jimmy put down the phone and continued to sleep. He decided to ignore Hughes for the time being; it probably wasn't anything serious.
In the afternoon, Jimmy arrived at Federal Square on time and first went to Hughes's office.
Jimmy, "Hughes, what did you need?"
Hughes, "Let's talk about what happened early this morning."
Jimmy, "We have a leak here. Ruiz is already looking into it. I was protecting a witness, but just one day after arriving at the safe house, six people came looking to shoot the witness."
Hughes frowned, "Ruiz hasn't reported this."
Jimmy, "No one likes OPR. If we let them investigate, it would disrupt the whole team. Ruiz can handle it himself."
Hughes nodded, there wasn't much to say to Jimmy about this; he decided he would speak directly with Ruiz later. "I wanted you here to introduce you to two people, both of whom you know. Let's go to your office."
Hughes and Jimmy went together to the office, where two people were already waiting, one a familiar face: Alexander Macro from the Chicago office, and the other was a black woman, well, more like a black lady, who seemed older than Jimmy.
Hughes, "Alexander Macro, former Senior Agent in the Chicago office, taking over as the head of the Homicide Team from Chris, and this is Philicia Lang, Macro's partner. This is Jimmy Yang, who was recently the acting head of the Homicide Team."
Jimmy, "Welcome to Manhattan, Macro. Good to see you again."
Macro, "Good to see you too, looking forward to working together."
Hughes, "Jimmy, start by helping Macro get acquainted with our situation here. Any issues, come to me."
Macro, "OK."
Hughes turned and left; it seemed Macro and his partner had arrived that morning, and now both desks in the office were already set up with their belongings and computers.
Jimmy, "It looks like we're destined to work together, you even got transferred to Manhattan."
Macro, "It's just a transfer, OK, what is our team working on currently?"
Jimmy, "Nothing."
Macro, "What? How is that possible?"
Jimmy shrugged, "You should know NYPD has the largest police force in the country, they handle most cases themselves. This side is the Homicide Team; we naturally get fewer cases to start with. So, we handle normal homicide cases along with internal support tasks."
Macro, "What about previous cases?"
Jimmy, "Taxi drivers and homeless assaults, it went on for over a month, it's closed now; the shooter died, ballistic testing confirmed his three guns were involved, the evidence is conclusive, unfortunately, we couldn't prosecute at the end."
Macro was somewhat speechless, "So, what are you working on now?"
Jimmy, "These past few days, I've been assisting the Organized Crime Division occasionally doing witness protection. Oh, previously there were also times I was sent to other offices to work on cases, as well as collaborative cases with other departments like Court Police and Anti-Terrorism Bureau."
Macro, "OK, I'll start by reviewing previous cases then."
Jimmy nodded, "There's some tea I've put there, help yourselves."
With a new leader appointed, Jimmy probably wouldn't need to go to Hughes for blame anymore, which was a slight relief. However, the new leader seemed tough, probably not as easily fooled as Chris.
Jimmy had talked about him with Hughes back at the headquarters in Washington, D.C. He hadn't expected Hughes to move so quickly, securing his transfer in just a few days.
Now, one thing was certain, his capability in handling cases was indeed strong. The hijacking case with all its complexities was handled meticulously, not a straightforward task at all; coordination and analytical abilities were quite crucial, and Hughes probably paid a price to get him transferred to Manhattan.
Jimmy powered up the computer, checked the system to ensure everything was in order, and only then opened his notebook to start drafting a report; he couldn't help it, the report from last night still needed to be written.
Macro and Philicia also settled in; having previously been at the Chicago office, they now needed to familiarize themselves with Manhattan, and also get a rough understanding of New York, at the very least know the major locations without having to look up a map. Their tough days were not going to be short; Jimmy himself had consulted the map numerous times during his probation period.
In the evening, after work, Jimmy invited Macro and Philicia for a drink; they were still staying at a hotel, so they went to a bar near Federal Square for a couple of drinks to talk about things they couldn't discuss openly at the office. Macro was a nice guy, although he appeared quite stern, he was still approachable.
From the way Philicia treated Macro, it was clear she held him in high respect; their partnership might have been long-standing, and now it seemed that Macro had surpassed mere respect in Philicia's mind, entering into stages of admiration, even reverence.
Jimmy too was quite interested in Macro, chatting casually while stealthily trying to gather some information about his past, though he hardly gleaned anything substantial.
After chatting for a while, Nia also came over after work, and Jimmy introduced them, including Nia in the conversation.
Afterwards, Jimmy rather reluctantly took Nia home and then went back to his own empty apartment alone. Nia's family was strict, she could sneak out occasionally, but most of the time she had to go straight home; it seemed despite being somewhat wild, she was very obedient.
