Jimmy took out his phone and dialed Ruiz's number, "Ruiz, six men, all dead, send someone over."
Ruiz said, "I'll notify immediately, you contact NYPD to arrange for scene protection."
Jimmy replied, "Understood."
Jimmy dialed 911. Someone in the apartment had already called the police. After reporting his identity, he asked the dispatch center to arrange for two police units to maintain order at the scene.
For Jimmy, it wasn't the first time he had made such a call. Soon after the police sirens began to wail outside, four officers arrived on the third floor. As usual, Jimmy showed his badge, explained that this was their safe house to protect a witness, and then had two officers stationed in the hallway at the door and two in the living room, ensuring the scene was completely secured.
Ruiz hadn't gone home either, as he too suspected there would be trouble, but he really believed that Jimmy alone was sufficient, and saw no need to allocate anyone else from the team to back him up.
Now that the night attackers were dead, it was time to bring in others to investigate. The poor soul on forensic duty tonight had a difficult time; with only a few on the night shift, handling six bodies and investigating various bullet holes in the living room was driving him crazy.
Razor stayed obediently in the bedroom, not coming out even though the place was a mess and people were coming and going.
Jimmy and Ruiz stood watching as the forensic team directed others to place markers, take photographs, and plot trajectories for the bullet holes in the wall; through it all, the two of them did not get involved.
Jimmy said, "Ruiz, those six guys seemed to be somewhat trained, probably not just typical gang members. I suspect they might be Azte's men. Do you know where the rest of them are?"
Ruiz shook his head, "Not sure, they only brought fewer than ten men, and our surveillance team's attention has been mainly on Trinidad. I've been looking all day but haven't found them. The team that was following them lost track yesterday."
Jimmy said, "We still need to find a way to get rid of them completely. It's a bit too much, sending six guys at once, they're giving Razor too much credit."
Ruiz glanced toward the bedroom, "Don't underestimate Razor, he must have something they want, or they wouldn't be so desperate to kill him. Seems we can't treat him as just a regular witness, we need to dig something up."
Jimmy replied, "Well, that's your problem now, I won't interfere. But I think we still need to find the mole. They got his exact location within a day, this person is definitely no ordinary one."
Ruiz nodded, "I know, but there are quite a few people who have access to safe house information, so it might take some time and evidence is hard to come by."
Jimmy said, "How about I go talk to Trinidad's Serra?"
Ruiz was visibly agitated, "What do you want to talk to him about?"
Jimmy said, "We need to wrap this thing up. Trinidad has already taken over Razor's territory and he's still relentlessly trying to get rid of him. I want to ask why and see if I can put an end to this."
Ruiz replied, "No need, I'll follow up. You've been busy for two days, after things wind down here you should go home and rest."
Jimmy sighed; Ruiz clearly didn't trust that he just wanted to talk. "Okay, fine, just let me know if you need me."
In the middle of the night, Jimmy left the scene to Ruiz and his team, went downstairs, drove back to his own apartment, freshened up, and continued to catch up on sleep. As for the day, well, he called in sick, a very legitimate excuse, and Hughes should be able to understand.
