The NYPD officer flashed his flashlight at Jimmy, then moved it away, "It's you again, who exactly are you?"
Well, this NYPD officer had previously checked Jimmy's ID and had stopped him for a traffic halt on the road.
Jimmy: "Special Agent Jimmy Yang with the FBI, conducting an investigation. Heard gunshots over here and came to check," Jimmy duly presented his ID for the Patrol Officer to verify, "The gunshots came from inside; he ran out with a gun, and I stopped him. The gun on the ground is his."
A Patrol Officer went back to the car to re-verify Jimmy's identity, while another Patrol Officer stood in front of Jimmy, looking at him. Although he had re-holstered his gun, his right hand was still resting on the grip, never letting go, and he didn't check the gun and the person on the ground.
"No problem. Here's your ID back, Agent Yang." The Patrol Officer who verified Jimmy's identity returned and handed him his ID.
Jimmy: "Thank you. I still need to check inside; the target he was shooting at has not yet been confirmed. Who's coming with me?"
The Patrol Officer who verified his identity walked into the alley with Jimmy. A person was lying on the ground; the flashlight revealed a pool of blood. Jimmy put on gloves, checked the person's neck for a pulse, and confirmed he was dead, "He's dead; let's wait for the forensic unit to arrive."
Two officers and Jimmy arrived at the mouth of the alley; the officers took police tape from their car and began cordoning off the scene. Another patrol car arrived and joined in securing the area.
Once the forensic unit and the ambulance were in place, they began investigating the scene and collecting evidence, starting with the two bodies on the ground—tagging, photographing, and gathering evidence.
Jimmy pointed at a wall and said, "The bullet holes in the wall were from my gun, just warning shots, I wasn't aiming at a target."
The forensic unit gathered bullet fragments from the wall; Jimmy had fired a lot because the Evil Spirit was a gathering of smoke, which slowed the bullets slightly but didn't completely intercept them, still hitting the wall across.
This shooting wasn't like in the movies where bullets stop mid-air, extinguish the Evil Spirit, then fall to the ground; that's ridiculous. To achieve that effect, the Evil Spirit would need a relatively dense physical form, yet not be completely solid, as that would fragment the bullets.
The forensic team was quite familiar with Jimmy; his cases here always involved some blood or scares, but usually didn't involve reckless shooting. They muttered among themselves while extracting bullet fragments from the wall, not bothered by Jimmy, who wasn't by their side; a little backbiting wasn't much of an issue.
Jimmy worked with the paramedics to handle the two bodies on the ground, both of which were sent to the forensic doctor under hastily arranged lights. Jimmy saw the full appearance of the gunman for the first time: white, male, looked quite old, at least in his 40s, wearing ordinary clothes, completely inconspicuous, the type nobody would notice in a crowd.
He looked somewhat like Dave, who had died earlier. Now they just had to wait for the forensic doctor's examination. If his manner of death was the same as Dave's, then Jimmy's prior speculation would likely be correct: there wasn't just one Evil Spirit, or perhaps someone else was controlling the Evil Spirits, and this gunman was just a moving shell like Dave.
The reason he speculated that the earlier Evil Spirit wasn't Dave's was that this area was identified by Chuck and others as having a higher body count; some of those deaths were likely his doing, meaning there were two Evil Spirits in play.
These were only guesses, but they also put some pressure on Jimmy. From today's encounter, the pressure from the supernatural side wasn't great. The key seemed to be that they relied on killing people to provide souls, possibly as a sacrifice, either way, it meant someone had been killed.
The more Evil Spirits, the more deaths, and while Jimmy wasn't exorbitantly righteous, he still firmly stood for law and order, or lowering the standard a bit, for lawful neutrality. This situation of using people as sacrifices was quite disturbing to him.
After the scene was completely investigated and the others returned to the station, Jimmy drove straight home. He had been busy all night and was now quite tired. He went straight to sleep, needing to continue the investigation after daybreak.
In the morning, Jimmy was woken by hunger, which was odd as normally his physique wouldn't be affected by missing one or two meals, yet he woke up truly hungry, feeling a slight stomach ache.
Jimmy washed up, went to the kitchen, started the coffee maker, then made himself some fried eggs and bacon, added some cucumber and tomato, and toasted four slices of bread, quickly filling his stomach.
Checking that there was still plenty of time, Jimmy sat on the couch drinking his coffee, contemplating his situation. He had been somewhat drowsy when he got home last night and hadn't summarised anything. Now, thinking back on yesterday's fight, something seemed off.
Jimmy picked up his gun case, took out the M686 and the Remington 1875. The M686 was confirmed to damage the Evil Spirit, as Jimmy had seen the white spot disappear after hitting it, which was within his initial judgement. What was unusual was the Remington 1875; in the "Heart Eye" state, he could see that the bullets from this gun inflicted additional damage on the Evil Spirit, as the smoke-like body of the Evil Spirit rippled like water when hit by the bullets, unlike the M686.
