Jerry carefully examined the room and in one corner he discovered the same marks, with the walls on both sides exhibiting a faded area. He then proceeded to the adjacent room to determine the size of this area on the wall.
This was a likely confirmation that some kind of supernatural phenomenon had originated from Dave's side, passing directly through the wall and exiting through this corner.
"Brother, what's behind the wall I'm facing?" Jimmy pointed to his current position.
Prison guard: "Behind that are the clean water pipes, sewage pipes, and the steam heating ducts. Further out, you reach the building's wall."
Jimmy: "Is there a map?"
Prison guard: "There's one in the office."
Jimmy: "Is there a tape measure in the office?"
Prison guard: "Yes, there is."
Jimmy and the prison guard went to the office. Comparing the map to the direction he had observed earlier, Jimmy sighed. New York was crammed with buildings; tall skyscrapers filled the view in that direction, making tracking almost impossible.
Returning to the cell with the tape measure, Jimmy measured the differences in height between the shadowed spots, jotted down his findings in a notebook, and then left the detention center.
The situation was now troublesome. Based on the current investigation, they only had the autopsy results of two bodies, and no formal report had been compiled. Closing the case would be difficult. Moreover, since the case involved another criminal, whose situation hadn't yet been investigated, and given that he was still in the detention center without having been legally processed, his death there was bound to complicate matters further.
Back in the office, Jimmy began to research the architectural information of the detention center. He wasn't an expert in this field, but the intelligence personnel at the FBI were. Jimmy contacted Nick, who had previously assisted him in tracking suspects. Nick helped to locate the blueprints and confirm the floor height.
Based on the floor height and the measurements he had taken, Jimmy started calculating the angle and the potential linear path the supernatural entity might have traversed, but he eventually had to give up.
Because the detention center's cells were on a higher floor, from that height, it mostly overlooked other tall buildings. If the supernatural entity really moved only in a straight line, it could disappear anywhere along that line, not to mention that it could have changed direction entirely upon exiting the detention center, potentially flying into the sky or burrowing into the ground.
In the end, Jimmy couldn't determine the exact location, so he had no choice but to give up. Running around verifying each location among so many high-rise buildings and places was simply too difficult.
This case was truly frustrating. Why did a simple serial murder case have to lead to all these bizarre complications? What on earth was going on with this world? Events that others might not encounter once in a lifetime, he had encountered several times in just two or three years.
Jimmy put down his pen, leaned back in his chair, and looked up at the ceiling, feeling as if he truly was different from others. In these past few years, during times of misfortune, all sorts of messes seemed to emerge around him, and it seemed as if people connected to him were also infected by his ill luck.
His first homeless friend Jerry had his daughter kidnapped.
His trainee at the police force, Noah, got shot.
The closest cop in the county police, Cage, had a son who got into drugs, and Jimmy had to cover for him.
The most supportive chief, James, was shot on his way home from work.
The colleague who helped him with identity verification, Tom, was labeled a "dead man" internally by the CIA.
Peter at the FBI was shot, fortunately, he was unharmed.
Ruiz was shot, and Jimmy avenged him.
Chris had cancer and had to retire early.
Dammit, thinking about it, it seemed like only Hughes from Stone City's FBI, Justin from the bar, Hughes from New York, and Lambert from Dallas hadn't encountered trouble yet. Jimmy really felt like a walking disaster.
No more, he couldn't think about it anymore. It was just too terrifying.
