Veronica was already dead, and the Stumbling Block Plan was going to be terminated directly by Bourne according to the plot, but was he really safe now? Or should he try to get hold of the documents to confirm whether he was part of the Stumbling Block Plan?
"Ding-a-ling," Jimmy's cell phone rang. It was that unregistered phone, which was only used to contact Daniel. It must be him, though the number was different. Jimmy answered the call.
"Hi, sir, I heard you need a driver? Daniel referred me," a man's voice came from the phone, thankfully, he didn't start speaking French but English instead.
Jimmy: "Which Daniel?"
"Marseille."
Jimmy suddenly felt like laughing. This Daniel seemed unreliable, but he turned out to be quite meticulous this time.
Jimmy: "Oh, are you in Paris? If I need a ride, I'll contact you. I'm just traveling for now and don't need it at the moment."
"OK, call this number when you need it."
Jimmy hung up the phone and continued to think back on the plot. If nothing went wrong, Bourne was going to end up back in Paris. He remembered that a person in charge came to Paris to deal with this matter and got killed, but exactly where?
While sipping his coffee and thinking, Jimmy completely pushed his travel plans to the back of his mind. Anyway, he always had to listen to the police channel. He took a walkie-talkie from his backpack, plugged in the earphones, adjusted the channel, and put it back.
The police channel was indeed all in French, and he heard no mention of Jason Bourne. After finishing his coffee, Jimmy walked onto the street, looked back toward the spot where the agent had jumped from a building. It was already cordoned off by the police. It seemed like the Paris police, though often unreliable, were quite competent when it came to dealing with a death. They had arrived promptly.
Plan changed, what's the point of sightseeing now? Forget it, now it's all about following Jason, finding the CIA Paris station, and maybe skimming through some files to see if his information was there.
Jimmy pondered the reasons he might use to get involved, but no matter how he calculated it, there seemed to be no way he could partake in this feud. His own identity was a big problem. Was he supposed to activate it prematurely? That wouldn't work either, what if he was assigned to assassinate Bourne after activation? If he remembered correctly, Bourne was the pinnacle of agents, many undercover agents upon activation had failed to handle him.
Furthermore, there was a round-faced girl in the movie; though he couldn't recall her name, he had a vague impression of her appearance. Since Jason Bourne looked just like he did in his memory, this girl must be similar. She was the contact at the Paris station. Maybe he could stir up some trouble if he found her?
Jimmy smoked a cigarette on the roadside, lost in thought while waiting for a taxi. Since he had decided to abandon his travel plan, it made more sense to return to the hotel and wait for news.
He found a taxi driver who spoke English and went back to the hotel. Lying on the bed, he continued to think through his plan. Suddenly, he realized a troubling fact: a movie is just a movie. In the movies, Jason Bourne was always on the run, but how long was he actually on the run? How many days?
Jimmy only had a week's vacation, and three days had already passed. Subtracting the day he needed for his return journey, he could stay in Paris for at most another three days before he had to go back. Could Bourne wrap everything up and return to Paris within three days?
Struggling to recall the details, Jimmy pounded the bed and removed the walkie-talkie earphones, setting them aside. Listening further seemed pointless. Although he knew that Bourne would be pursued by the police, he had no idea when the pursuit would start or end. If he could stay here and wait, maybe he would have a chance to eventually make contact with the CIA's Paris station. Now with time being a strict constraint, he couldn't do anything.
Jimmy paced around the room, frustrated. Forget it, leave Paris, it doesn't matter when Bourne might come back, this matter was no longer his concern. Staying here to keep an eye out for Bourne was less appealing than spending a couple of days relaxing elsewhere before returning to New York. Once there, he could meet Tom and brief him on the situation. Maybe Tom would have some insights.
Jimmy pulled out a map of France and checked it. Marseille, that interesting Daniel, located on the Mediterranean coast— the weather there was also nice. Why not enjoy the Mediterranean breeze there?
Jimmy packed his things, checked out of the hotel, and took a taxi to the airport. Flying was more convenient for covering the few hundred kilometers from Paris to Marseille. As for the plane ticket, he would just buy it at the airport. Jimmy was becoming more unplanned by the moment; the matter with Bourne had completely thrown him off, and his travel plans were now just go where he ended up.
In the afternoon, Jimmy arrived at Marseille's airport. As he exited, he called Daniel. Actually, Jimmy had a thought; about people like Daniel who seemed special, perhaps he was also a character from some movie plot, though Jimmy had virtually no impression of French movies.
Since he had nothing else to do, taking part in an unknown storyline could be an interesting experience.
Jimmy: "Daniel, can you come to Marseille airport to pick me up?"
Daniel: "Oh, I remember you. You're in Marseille?"
Jimmy: "Yeah, just got to the exit. How long will it take you to pick me up?"
Daniel didn't respond immediately but spoke to someone next to him in French, completely unintelligible to Jimmy. "OK, wait for me for 10 minutes." Daniel then hung up after this brief reply to Jimmy.
Ten minutes, just the time it took Jimmy to smoke a cigarette. He stood by the roadside at the exit, observing the people around him. Marseille's climate was truly good; although Christmas was just around the corner, the temperature here was still around 20 degrees Celsius—a very comfortable range.
Suddenly, a buzzing sound approached, and a taxi with obvious race car modifications stopped in front of Jimmy.
"Hey, get in." There was another person in Daniel's car, sitting in the passenger seat. Daniel leaned over to him and greeted Jimmy. Despite there being another person, it wasn't a big problem. Jimmy opened the trunk, placed his luggage inside, and sat in the back seat; Daniel then drove the taxi away from the airport.
Jimmy: "Bonjour."
Daniel: "Do you speak French?"
Jimmy: "I wanted to learn, but unfortunately, I didn't have enough time and only learned this greeting. Daniel, help me find a hotel, please."
Daniel: "OK."
As Daniel drove, he chatted with the person in the passenger seat. French really was difficult to understand. Judging by their expressions and movements, they seemed to be discussing something, and the man in the passenger seat seemed quite troubled.
"Screech~~" Daniel suddenly braked, and the taxi stopped by the roadside. The passenger hit the dashboard, and Jimmy was thrust forward against the back of the passenger seat.
"FxxK, what happened, Daniel?" Jimmy shouted, covering his nose.
Daniel turned to look at the man in the passenger seat and exchanged a few sentences in French. Jimmy was almost driven mad. Why was there a language barrier? Whatever they were saying, damn it, let me understand!
Daniel turned to Jimmy and said, "Emilian, he's going to be a dad, 8 months now."
Jimmy looked at Emilian sitting in the passenger seat and extended his right hand: "Ah, congratulations, Emilian."
Emilian turned and shook Jimmy's hand: "Thank you."
Daniel: "Also, my girlfriend is pregnant, two stripes."
Jimmy had already retracted his hand, but he extended it again towards Daniel: "Congratulations to you too, Daniel."
Daniel slapped Jimmy's hand, then turned back to Emilian and continued their conversation in French before starting to drive again.
Suddenly Emilian pointed ahead and shouted, Daniel and Jimmy then turned to look forward. A Santa Claus was cutting a bike lock with wire cutters and rode away on a scooter.
Without saying anything, Daniel immediately started the taxi and followed the Santa. Jimmy: "Hey, can you tell me what's going on?"
Emilian suddenly spoke in accented English: "We have been tracking a Santa Claus crime syndicate for months, all departments deployed and still didn't catch them. 37 cases in 8 months, all criminals in Santa disguises. Just yesterday, they escaped our encirclement driving a monster truck, betting my personal honor, I must catch them before Christmas."
You speak English, why were you speaking French the whole time before!
Jimmy suddenly took an interest, it seemed his guess was not wrong; this Daniel definitely was a key character in some movie plot, and just arriving in Marseille he had already gotten involved in the storyline.
Jimmy asked: "Emilian, are you a Marseille policeman?"
Emilian nodded, his eyes still not leaving the Santa ahead.
Jimmy then looked at Daniel: "What about you, Daniel? Are you also a policeman?"
Daniel: "Of course not, I'm just a taxi driver, but I happen to have a few friends who are policemen. Hahaha."
