Chapter 633: Altar (Part 2)

Priest Rodney's car carried some food and water, but no sleeping bags. When they cleared the church earlier, they found wooden beds inside, but no sleeping bags to sleep in. Jimmy really doesn't want to sleep in his clothes, and it's unclear what Priest Rodney was thinking, coming to sleep for a day without any preparation.

In fact, it's not that Priest Rodney didn't want to prepare; it's that while on the way, he learned that several other priests were delayed due to some issues. Originally, they were supposed to gather here today, but now they have to wait until tomorrow.

Jimmy returned to the church with sleeping bags, camping lamps, batteries, and food and water. Priest Rodney also breathed a sigh of relief; indeed, he wasn't well-prepared this time. They originally planned to start the operation today, but since they're already here, he intends to inspect the site today, so he didn't plan to find a hotel in the nearby city. Now, the camping equipment Jimmy brought back allows them to stay comfortably for the night.

Priest Rodney and Jimmy prepared a bit, then left the church together, heading to the metal recycling station in the northern part of the town.

Speaking of a recycling station, it's mainly a place for recycling metals, old cars, and old equipment, rather than a household waste recycling station swarming with flies.

Jimmy and Priest Rodney walked into the recycling station, observing around as they asked, "Priest Rodney, how did you find this place? How did you determine this is their den?"

Priest Rodney: "We have our own sources. After confirming that the Chaos Gate Church's den is nearby, we arranged for someone to search here. We didn't go through official channels.

A steward from the church previously checked this little town, and he was the one who discovered the altar. However, he seemed to have suffered some mental disturbance, often going through bouts of confusion. After reporting his findings, he was addled and is currently recovering in a monastery."

Jimmy: "Where's the altar you mentioned?"

Priest Rodney: "There's a small house in front with a basement. It's inside, not the big house, but the tool shed beside it."

Jimmy nodded, and they went directly to the outside of the small house, not rushing in but checking the exterior first. The door was locked with a chain, and the lock appeared quite new, bearing a cross mark. It seems like the steward who investigated before locked it. Generally, people wouldn't use such a lock.

Heart Eye still has flaws in Jimmy because he can only see outlines, and once connected, he can't distinguish if things are separate or a whole. This leads to him not clearly knowing what many things are; he can only discern a basement-like space beneath the small house, but the surrounding walls are uneven, and besides the altar-like platform, there seems to be a statue too.

Priest Rodney took out a bottle of high-concentration Holy Water, prayed, then applied it to his short sword and eyelids. Jimmy had already inquired before that Priest Rodney and the others cannot directly see some invisible Resentful Spirits; they need Holy Water as an auxiliary tool, which is completely different from Jimmy.

The reason Jimmy was seized by Priest Rodney and them is that he can directly see Resentful Spirits, which is his greatest asset, and this is also a regret for Priest Rodney and Priest White. If Jimmy had been discovered by them during childhood, he would definitely have become an excellent Exorcism priest; his ability to crush many people.

They checked the surrounding environment outside without entering the small house because they weren't sure what would be inside. Before others arrived, they didn't plan to go directly inside.

After confirming the area was safe, they returned to the church to rest. In the early morning hours, Jimmy suddenly woke up with the same heart-palpitating feeling as before. But after looking around, he found no issues with the church and its vicinity.

Jimmy looked towards the recycling station's direction, but due to the distance, he couldn't see anything. However, he was sure something was happening there, causing him to have this feeling.

Jimmy glanced at Priest Rodney, who showed no signs of waking up. He frowned, unzipped his sleeping bag, and sat up. Since the heart-palpitating feeling was present, something must have occurred, as he had experienced before. Not sleeping for a night was no problem for him, and he waited like this for the entire night.

The next morning, Jimmy and Priest Rodney ate a cold breakfast outside the church, lighting a small campfire. Soon two cars arrived, and from them emerged four individuals dressed in black priestly robes.

Rodney stepped forward to greet them and also introduced Jimmy. Of course, he introduced an official identity for him, saying he was there as a witness. Jimmy greeted the group, and the four entered the church for a short rest before getting ready to depart.

Priest Rodney's words were still intriguing. They didn't intend to let Jimmy reveal his real abilities in front of more people, so as just a witness, he was excluded from the action.

Checking the time, it was approaching noon. Priest Rodney and the others went to the small house, took out a long key to open the door lock, removed the chain, not just tossing it aside.

While Priest Rodney was storing the chain, a priest beside him pushed the door open, and several others entered the small house. It was a tool shed, with many tools hanging on both walls. Their target was in the middle of the room, pulling open a trapdoor on the floor where a staircase extended down.

All the priests took out their weapons; besides the short sword, a priest was holding a sharp-headed axe, the axe's head in front was for chopping, the back saw a sharp point, appearing powerful. The axe handle had various patterns; Jimmy couldn't discern them, but from the priest holding it, it seemed like he was skilled in using it.

Jimmy also pulled out two 1875s. He had a cross-body bag on him, hung across his chest, where he stored prepared spare bullets; additionally, the dagger Priest Rodney previously gave him was hanging from his belt, but he didn't bring the ring Priest White gave him. He considered that the ring might have a problem, so he stored it in a box at home.

Priest Rodney led the way with a flashlight, Jimmy at the back, and they filed into the basement. This basement was sizable, roughly thirty to forty square meters. As their flashlights illuminated, they found light bulbs on the walls, but this place had long been abandoned without electricity.

At the far end of the basement, a platform stood with a life-sized statue standing atop it, both hands clenched, crossed on its chest, head slightly raised facing upwards.

The platform in front of the statue looked different in color. Jimmy leaned closer, smelling a stench of rot; it seemed like it was a place for them to perform blood sacrifices, with dried blood staining the platform, though no sacrifice corpses remained.

On both sides of the basement stood four statues kneeling on one knee, their hands folded on their knees, bowing toward the central altar.

Upon entering the basement, Jimmy felt a chilling sensation, growing more tangible the nearer he got to the statue.

Priest Rodney and the others cautiously examined the basement; it seemed abnormal, but nothing out of the ordinary happened with their investigation. The priests walked back to the stairs, exchanged a few words, then decided to leave the basement, planning to return prepared to demolish the altar.

Jimmy followed them out, watching Priest Rodney lock the small house with the chain again before they finally left.

Jimmy pulled Priest Rodney aside as they trailed behind, "Priest Rodney, how do you plan to handle this place?"

Priest Rodney: "We'll prepare and perform an Exorcism Ceremony in the basement, then break their statue."

Jimmy asked in surprise, "Just like that? So simply?"

Priest Rodney nodded: "Once the statue is shattered, and the source of the Evil God's power is expelled, it's over here."

Priest Rodney's expression wasn't relaxed, as he had battled the Chaos Gate folks twice before already; it couldn't be that simple.
