Tower of Memories

Episode 77: Lying in Wait

Tuesday morning was quiet in Dragon Tower. But a good kind of quiet. No locked doors, no strange Echoes, no doors that weren't there every day.

It could almost pass as normal.

Even with the orange skull floating around Russel as he left his room.

I was getting very desensitized to the sight of glowing human skulls. I would be more concerned about this if I thought they came from actual people's bodies.

It was still a massive improvement from my previous school. I felt like I was adjusting to the weirdness. These were my friends and I wouldn't have them or my Tower any other way.

History was still covering the Mists. Behind Dellik was an image of a man I was trying to not stare at. It was a little comforting that Mom looked nothing like Merripen. I saw nothing of her in the angry looking man reflected in the mirror behind Dellik as he spoke.

It was a small mercy, but one I would take gladly.

Jarec was strangely excited at lunch.

Did I dare ask? Should I risk getting involved?

"What's up with you?" Celica asked.

Oh good. I didn't have to choose.

"The Newspaper club picked who it's sending to do their piece on our Tower," Jarec announced with a smile.

Where was that sense of dread coming from? Oh, right probably the mischievous smirk from Celica. As their Tower representative, I should probably say something about them behaving but….

"Tell us," Celica stage-whispered.

Jarec was grinning and I didn't trust it. "Albenion is coming with them."

Albenion? That name sounded familiar… Oh right. The mastermind behind that smear piece from the first paper of the year.

I should probably say something before they start getting ideas. Or making plans. "Whatever it is, just don't get caught."

Angelina shot me a scandalized look. "Serafina! You're the representative, you shouldn't be encouraging them!"

"Why have both of you assumed that someone is up to something?" Jarec asked in mock offense and a smile on his face.

Stolen from its original source, this story is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.

If he does it too, does that mean Mom got it from her family? Was Vivian Hearth like this when no one was looking?

"I like to think I know you both well enough at this point to assume that you're up to something. Also did we forget about Celica's little art project?" I pointed out.

She cackled. "Don't worry. We won't do anything, I promise."

There was something suspicious about the way she said it. I had no doubts that she wasn't up to something. "Like I said, as long as you don't get caught, we're good."

Angelina's despair was palpable. "Why are you like this?"

"Because Dragons," I told her.

Monsters was better because we were talking about plants again. Because being able to identify which mushrooms are poisonous and which are safe to come into contact with, while not a skill I suspected I would need to use often, still potentially had some practicality to it.

Also anything was better than having another unit about arachnids. If I ever saw another spider again it would be too soon.

Fethris and I were walking together as we compared the sketches we had been handed to the specimens around the woods.

"How are you feeling about the newspaper thing?" Fethris asked.

I turned to face him. "I'm not really feeling anything about it. The others are going to do whatever they're going to do about it and that will be that. Then it will be over and done with."

"I was worried about the fact Albenion is involved."

I shrugged, "I don't care about him. Or anyone who comes with him. I'll do my duty as Tower representative and that will be that."

He smirked, "And you wonder why I wanted you to do it."

I narrowed my eyes at him. "I do, actually. I have no idea what any of you were thinking."

"If it was me in your position, I would have stalled and stopped this entire thing. And I would be petty about anything Thoth tried to do in the council."

"So what?"

"You do know people talk, right? Especially if they're wearing blue. Thoth gossips about the council meetings, which then moves down the line as Pegasus tells everyone everything."

"I fail to see how that has anything to do with me."

He sighed, "Is there a particular reason you don't like being called Sera?"

Oh. That's what he was getting at. "There is. And I don't really want to talk about it."

Sera, can I ask you something?

I shook my head before my brain went further down that rabbit hole.

"Okay. I'm just making sure you understand."

"So you think you'd what, misuse Tower representative power if you had it? How? I barely do anything."

"Sometimes the illusion of authority can be enough. And the fact you're clearly not trying to use it in any capacity is telling people everything they need to know."

"I have no idea what you mean Fethris."

He chuckled, "Right. Pixies don't play those kinds of games. Just, try not to forget that even though we're Dragons now, there were reasons we were placed in those other Towers."

Now I really had no idea what he was talking about.

He sighed, "Don't worry too much about it."

"That's not helpful Fethris."

"You'd have been a disastrous Kelpie."

"I'm choosing to take that as a compliment based off the ones I've met."

He grinned.

Spellcraft on Wednesday morning was okay.

Lights was a spell I had seen cast several times in my life. It was one of Mom's favorites. Of course I knew the basics of how the spell was cast.

Both hands raised up, palms towards the sky, fingers spread wide.

For everyone else it brought forth ten little spots of in their color. Then those little spots floated around the caster randomly. The didn't make a lot of light, but it was enough to entertain a small child.

Little colored lights floated around the room. One might have mistaken them for fireflies or some other type of glowing flying insect. Assuming that person didn't look too closely or knew anything about magic.

There were all kinds of colors. Because of course. I wasn't sure which color belonged to who, far too many people to keep track of that sort of thing. But I did see Jarec blue and Angelina red hover around the room.

I look down at my left wrist. The cursed one.

No light show from me.

Not yet.

But someday.
