Multi-Dimensional Merchant System

Book 2 - Chapter 61 – Don't be Suspicious

"Agent Doe, please come in." Polina welcomed the stern looking woman as she held the door open, only briefly glancing at the man in a suit- likely another FBI agent- that was following behind her.

"Thank you, Ms. Ramirez." Jane nodded politely before gesturing to the man. "This is Agent John Smith. We're working together on this case... though I am unsure how much Mr. Silk has told you about it. Speaking of Mr. Silk, I was expecting him to be waiting for us...

"He is. He's just having some tea in the kitchen to help him calm down."Poli replied with a small frown. "This whole situation has him... stressed, to say the least."

"And he let you answer the door, even knowing a wanted terrorist is running around?" Agent Smith asked skeptically.

A brief flicker of annoyance passed across Poli's face- she wasn't some helpless woman and she knew it... And, considering her previous career, the FBI agents should know it as well; she had no doubt that they had looked at her record already. Schooling her features, she simply pointed at the corner next to the door with a smile.

While Jane already knew what was there, having actually looked around the room when they entered, John, being less experienced in the field, was surprised the see the shotgun propped up in the corner.

"I apologize, Ms. Ramirez." John said with a self-deprecating smile. "I let the fact that you are a Police Officer slip my mind."

"I was a Police Officer." Poli corrected gently, her smile returning as she led them towards the kitchen. "Can I get either of you something to drink?"

Jane was about to decline but, as her eyes fell on Oliver sipping slowly from a teacup, her nose twitched at the smell that wafted off of it- while the scents were familiar, and clearly some type of herbal tea, she couldn't quite identify it. "The tea smells lovely; may I ask what it is?"

"Hibiscus Ginger. I sweeten mine with a splash of honey, since I prefer it over sugar." Oliver said without looking up from his cup.

"Oli is big on his teas; he's got like twenty different blends to choose from. And one of those tea ball things-"

"Tea infuser."

"-since he likes the loose leaf tea instead of teabags." Poli continued, ignoring his interjection- she knew what it was, but loved to tease him about it. "I can make you a cup of what he has, or let you choose from the different blends..."

"The hibiscus ginger is fine, thank you." Jane smiled briefly.

When Poli glanced at Agent Smith, he just shrugged with a smile. "I'm just a coffee guy. Black, with two sugars, please."

The pair of Agents sat quietly, waiting for their drinks before they spoke... But, a couple minutes later when Polina set their drinks on the table in front of them, Oliver beat them to it.

"She was here about... an hour ago, give or take." He said slowly as he studied the two. "Odds are she has already left town, but I figured you would want at least a rough time frame first."

Jane nodded, equally slow to respond. "While we already have the locals out looking for her, we expected her to leave quickly. It's actually a bit unusual; normally she doesn't stay in one location for long..."

"Like I said... Creepy stalker." Oliver grimaced.

Jane took a moment to savor the scent of the tea before she spoke. "Maybe it would be best if you started from the beginning? She just... showed up here tonight?"

Polina's snort, filled with frustration- and a touch of anger, drew their attention to her. Shaking her head slowly, it was actually her that answered. "Tonight... wasn't really the beginning, though we didn't realize it until now..."

"I never imagined that someone I only met once would-" Oliver began to apologize, only to be cut off.

"I know, Oli. I'm not blaming you." Poli sighed, taking his hand. "I know Oli already mentioned that he met her, and shut her down when she tried to flirt with him... But, for me, it started about a month ago when I met my knew neighbor... Lyn..."

The story, even with the few 'modifications' Oli and Poli made, didn't really take long. While they stuck mostly to the truth, they naturally left off any mention of his extra abilities- or his jobs...

"I'm curious, and please don't take offense at this-, but... how did neither of you suspect that this 'Lyn' was actually Evelyn Hart?"

"Lyn is a fairly common name, and nickname." Oliver answered with a tinge of annoyance in his voice. "Hell, I know at least five people named Lyn, and another handful that go by Lyn..."

"You'll have to forgive him, Agent Smith." Polina said as she slowly stroked Oliver's hand. "He's not upset at you. More just... frustrated that he missed something like that. Though it's not really his fault either."

Stolen from its rightful author, this tale is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.

"You see... When he met her, she introduced herself as 'Eve'... and when I met her, it was 'Lyn'..." Poli sighed softly, shaking her head. "Neither of us actually heard the name 'Evelyn' until he spoke with Agent Doe earlier this week. Between his work, me resigning, and us preparing for the cookout... We just never made the connection until tonight."

"That's understandable." Jane nodded sympathetically at the two. "You mentioned that you put it all together during their confrontation earlier, right? And that's why you quickly ushered them out of the house?"

Poli nodded as she met the agent's eyes. "Yes. Actually, it was what Oliver said that made it click: 'I told you what would happen if I saw you again!'?"

"You have to understand, Oliver is one of the calmest and kindest people I have ever met. He almost never raises his voice- and he definitely doesn't threaten people." Poli shook her head as she let out a weak chuckle. "You really have to push him the wrong way for it to get to that... Which Eve did the first time they met."

"She wouldn't stop being a bitch and flirting with me, even after I shut her down." Oliver grumbled, looking down in embarrassment. "So... I may have threatened her... A little..."

Polina pushed on quickly to cover his embarrassment. "So, hearing those words, and having been told the story of him meeting this 'Eve'... Well, it all just kinda clicked-"

"And you didn't immediately call us?" John interrupted, disbelief written clear in his face and tone.

"We had a wanted terrorist in our home!" Polina nearly snarled, directing a sharp glare at the agent. Taking a deep breath to calm herself, she continued-though her words still had a bite to them. "A wanted terrorist, clearly obsessed with my fiance for some reason... Yeah, I didn't call you immediately. What if that set her off? What if she had a weapon on her?"

"What if any number of things that could have gone wrong actually did?"

"I couldn't take that chance... not that it mattered, really."

Waving her partner down, Jane leaned forward and spoke in a carefully neutral tone, as she didn't want to further antagonize the obviously upset Polina. "What do you mean by that, Ms. Ramirez?"

"I screwed up." Oliver sighed. "I called her Evelyn instead of 'Eve' or 'Lyn'... and she immediately knew that someone was here looking for her. She took off after that, and we came back here to get your card and call you..."

Jane nodded slowly. It made sense, really. Evelyn Hart had been evading law enforcement in numerous countries for decades, her instincts were sharp... and, as a vampire, she likely had abilities they weren't aware of... She knew that some supernatural creatures- including vampires- could possess abilities that warned them of danger or threats; it was actually a fairly common thing found among the creatures they hunted... Of course, the creatures they hunted were usually the ones that found themselves in danger most often, so it made sense for them to develop such an ability.

"That makes sense; Ms. Hart is known for narrowly evading law enforcement..." Jane sighed softly. "I wish I could say that she was gone for good, but... Honestly, this situation has already deviated from her normal behavior. She's never become interested in others- truthfully, we had her classified as a sociopath. Not that such a classification really matters..."

"It may be best if we place the two of you into protection until-"

"Absolutely not." Oliver interrupted with a scowl. "No offense, Agent Doe, but... you just said that she has repeatedly evaded the law. How long would we be stuck in some program? Years? Decades? And you want us to give up our lives- and my job- for that long... just in case she really is obsessed with me and comes back?"

"And what are the odds of that, really? Especially since it's obvious that you'll be watching in case she does? She may be crazy, but she's clearly not stupid... and her trying to mess with us again would definitely be stupid."

Jane sighed, shaking her head. "We can't force you, but I do encourage it strongly. Even if we are looking for her, we can't always be here... So, please, consider it?"

Climbing back into their car, Jane sighed softly. This whole assignment was a mess; chasing after a vampire that even Interpol hadn't gotten a hold of in decades? While she was confident in her abilities... this was a bit much, even if she did have a partner for this... And John was more of an analyst, anyway. Useful for finding what they needed, but if things went wrong...

"So, think they were being straight with us?" John asked, closing his door.

"Maybe..." Jane shrugged.

"Maybe? What, your famous nose couldn't pick up on something?"

An annoyed growl slipped out of Jane as she flexed her hands on the steering wheel... and sharp claws peaked out where her fingernails were for just a second before swiftly retracting- she hated when that happened, as it usually ruined her nail polish. "No. It didn't. Between the coffee, the tea, and your fucking cologne, I couldn't scent them properly!"

"I told you to stop wearing that shit!" She snarled, practically in his face.

John gulped as she slowly calmed herself and started driving. It was easy to forget, especially with how attractive she was, but Jane was incredibly dangerous- doubly so when someone pushed her buttons. People in their department still told the story of the last time she was reprimanded.

It may have been a decade ago, but no one forgets about an agent having his arm ripped off for sexual harassment- John hadn't forgotten so much as thought it was an exaggeration; Jane was always so calm and controlled, the perfect picture of a FBI agent... It was easy to overlook the fact that she was rather powerful, and a dangerous predator at heart...

Well, more than just her heart. She was a werewolf, after all.

"Did you at least manage to scan him?" Jane grumbled.

"Uh, yeah..." He muttered, pulling their magical scanner from his jacket pocket. A small, unassuming looking rectangle that closely resembled a cell phone, most would never believe it was a magical device. "I just acted like I was taking notes on my phone and pointed it right at his chest. He pinged as a low level one..."

"So barely magical and probably doesn't even know it? Yeah, that makes sense. Those two seem like any other suburban couple..." She snorted in wry humor, though a sad smile flashed across her face. "An unlucky suburban couple, seeing as they got the attention of a vampire. Hopefully us being around scared off Ms. Hart. I would hate it if she ruined things for them."

"So you do believe them?"

"I don't know. I mean, they do seem like nice people... I feel like maybe they left a few things out, but I don't think it really affects us. Probably just some personal matters that they don't want to air out to anyone, let alone government agents..."

"But what about all the stuff we suspect Silk of? Like the college on the other coast, or those dead skinheads?"

Jane shrugged indifferently. "We have no proof it was him... and if we suspect him with what little we have, then we would have to be suspicious of hundreds of others... Besides, the attackers from the college campus have been in custody for weeks and not a single one of them has ever heard of or even seen Mr. Silk... It's pretty safe to say that he is clear on that one, at least."

"As for the murders of those supremacists..." Jane waved it off like an annoying fly. "That's a mundane issue. Not our business."

"We'll still keep an eye on them, though. Both for their protection... And just in case we're wrong about them, even if it is unlikely."
