Eryies said, "But dear, you must be careful. Anything that suppresses death should not appear here. Because that does not align with the nature of the entire plane."
Lynch nodded and walked towards the camp with the Desire Demon. However, he had already secretly hidden the new recruit's insignia and the longsword on him. Unless a devil came forward to interrogate him, he was just an ordinary traveler between planes.
The camp here clearly resembled a military camp, at least apart from the tattered tents, there were quite a few targets for practice. The corpses of demons hung from the low trees, mostly timid demons. The Devil Warriors ceaselessly swung their weapons in various ways at those flesh targets, smashing the timid demons to a pulp. Then they shouted loudly, urging the overseers to quickly replace the targets. Any devil that could create a novel way to pulverize the flesh would be greeted with cheers and applause from their companions.
The hags weaved between the tents, holding all sorts of bizarre items in their hands. Their stature was short, mainly because their half-circular curved backs reduced their height. "Come buy some amulets, these are made from Ancient Giant Dragon scales, able to protect you," or "the beard of a Fire Titan, giving you extraordinary strength!"
With just a glance, Lynch could tell the authenticity of these things. After seeing no less than ten hags, he still couldn't find a single magic item with genuine efficacy. Even though he knew they were likely just fakes, there were still plenty of devils purchasing them. In this world where hope was gradually fading, even deception could bring a flicker of vitality.
The hags weren't selling hope; they just enjoyed letting those coming for a bloodbath feel a little more despair, for only souls that endured such torment could be considered the finest.
The mage with the Desire Demon caught the attention of the hags, and they crowded around to peddle their goods. Lynch smiled at them, but this action frightened the hags. Disappointment and anger, depression and loneliness were the expressions of this plane, while a smile was a luxury of other worlds. The hags were momentarily unsure of the mage's intentions, so they didn't dare to showcase the counterfeits they held.
"I have a deal to discuss with you," Lynch said, "I need the heart of a Snake Demon to complete my magic experiment. Do you have any in stock here? Name your price."
The hags exchanged glances, and their eyes darted back and forth. No one spoke, but Lynch knew that these ugly creatures all possessed spiritual abilities and were silently discussing what price to quote.
However, such spiritual ability held no secrecy in front of Lynch. The mage maintained a serious demeanor as if waiting for their offer, while secretly eavesdropping on the entire dialogue between the hags.
"The key is, how much is the heart of a Snake Demon worth to you, child!" The hag's voice was endlessly old, and their physical state was infinitely close to death. "It should be you who names the price, not us!"
"What if I could imbue everything in your hands with magic power, just as you claim?" Lynch replied. But the Desire Demon gave him a glance, anxiously trying to remind him of the taboo here. The mage said, as the hags gasped audibly, "Of course, those would only be temporary magic effects, which wouldn't make a difference once on the battlefield."
Several hags grinned, revealing scattered yellow teeth, and in their drooling mouths lay a soundless sneer. They kept rubbing their hands that had dried skin clinging only to the knuckles and asked excitedly, "Young man, could you explain in more detail? We're quite old, and don't hear very well."
'It'd be a miracle if they didn't understand!' Lynch thought to himself. But to him, such deception carried no psychological burden, after all, he was dealing with the devils, and those actually selling the goods were the hags. In order to appease these ugly "partners," Lynch patiently said, "When they get the items, they will feel the power within and naturally pay a higher price. But once on the battlefield, when these magic items are needed most, they'll find they have all lost their effectiveness. Is there any poison more effective than breaking the last hope of the warriors? I think you'll enjoy such souls."
