The Tathāgata Must Fail

Chapter 23: I Will Break the Shackles

It was a scene akin to the apocalypse.

The sky was enveloped in flames, and hordes of beasts continuously swooped down.

Countless people rushed toward the battlefield one after another.

A sea of fire surged forward, vast and boundless, painting the earth a uniform yellow.

"Hold it off!"

Immortals from across the world resisted the great calamity in the sky, their spells shining brightly against the wind.

However, these spells shattered upon contact with the vast sea of fire, leaving no mark behind.

The scorching flames descended from the sky, engulfing the earth, and devouring everything; all life perished amidst struggles.

Sun Wukong wanted to rescue the humans struggling in the flames, but his hand passed through the flames, unable to grasp anything.

"These are all illusions."

Sun Wukong thought to himself.

This was an event that had already transpired, a history lingering deep within the soul of Fu Xi.

Sun Wukong took a step forward, crossing the expanse of flames, walking toward the Heavenly Palace.

The Heavenly Palace was burning; immortals struggled desperately before the sea of fire. After searching for a moment, Sun Wukong spotted a woman.

She sat amidst the clouds, eyes closed, seemingly in cultivation.

Before her on the battlefield, a man familiar to Sun Wukong fought fiercely, bathed in blood.

That was Fu Xi.

He, along with a group of attendants, formed the last line of defense, protecting the woman from the onslaught of beasts.

"Give up!"

The apparition of Buddha Beads reflected in the sky, the voice cold and merciless.

"Your courage is commendable, but that is all there is to it."

The vast sea of fire accelerated once again, quickly engulfing the immortals at the front, one by one vanishing.

"War God."

As the sea of fire roared toward them, the attendants stood before the flames, turning back to Fu Xi, "Your Majesty, she…"

"I will protect her."

Fu Xi declared.

The attendants bowed respectfully.

Their bodies radiated light, transforming into Light Shields to stall the advance of the sea of flames.

Countless streams of light rained down from the sky.

Each stream of light represented an immortal.

No one backed down.

Like all immortals of the Three Realms, their resistance against the calamity was filled with bravery.

The sea of fire quickly devoured the sky.

Fu Xi's body radiated immortal power, creating golden waves that formed barriers around the woman.

His body burned within the sea of flames, drops of blood falling from him.

Yet no matter how many Demon Beasts surged forward, not one could breach the barrier.

The terrifying sea of fire covered the sky, plummeted to the earth, igniting forests and enveloping cities; the power of all mortal beings was helpless against it.

Corpses littered the ground everywhere, cries and screams incessant.

These were the sounds of a world marching toward destruction.

Living beings perished by the billions.

Until eventually, when there was almost nothing left of the world, the woman opened her eyes.

"I will sacrifice myself to recreate heaven and earth."

Like a black hole, endless essence of heaven and earth surged toward her.

She was enveloped in a radiance akin to the sun.

Her body burned, rising amidst the sea of flames, transforming into a glowing sun.

The dazzling light extinguished the surrounding flames.

The vast sea of fire began to shatter and disperse, overwhelmed by her ascending power.

"Your Majesty."

Tears overflowed from Fu Xi's eyes as he witnessed the woman radiating intense brilliance.

"Fu Xi, rejoice, the brethren from the Underworld have activated the Six Paths of Reincarnation for us."

The woman hovered in mid-air, her voice filled with joy, "The souls of all beings have been preserved; once I recreate heaven and earth, everything will reappear."

"But…"

Fu Xi sobbed uncontrollably, "I, I just wanted you to leave…"

"I know."

The woman's voice carried a tinge of melancholy.

Her power was immense, the structure of the world clear to her, the Heavenly Dao vividly clear in her eyes.

"I must go."

The woman bade farewell to Fu Xi.

As the Heavenly Emperor, she did not regret her choice, yet…

Knowing she had to embody the Heavenly Dao, yet still needing the man who loved her most to protect her.

This was perhaps the cruelest thing in the world.

"I'm sorry…"

The woman's voice carried a tinge of melancholy.

"Forget me, Fu Xi."

She said, "This is an order, forget me, fall in love with her, and continue to live."

Fu Xi clenched his teeth, wiping away his tears.

"No, I wish to accompany Your Majesty."

His body radiated light, his immortal power ceaselessly flying into the sky, transferring to the woman.

The woman transformed into a Light Ball, soaring into the sky.

After a surge of explosive energy, the sea of fire disappeared, and the heavens and earth regained their clarity.

Sun Wukong watched this scene.

A person appeared behind him.

"Her will merged with heaven and earth, yet Fu Xi survived, how tragic."

The voice stated, "Fortunately, my soul also survived, using Heavenly Destiny to create Reincarnation."

Sun Wukong turned his head and saw Buddha Beads.

"Is this the history of the past?"

"A past history, but now it's all forgotten."

Buddha Beads said, "No one remembers, no one cares."

Buddha Beads clasped his hands together, "All beings suffer, this scene you've seen occurs in countless worlds."

"Why must they be destroyed?"

Sun Wukong asked.

"If we don't destroy them, they will keep running outward, like an endless rain."

Buddha Beads replied.

"Beings are ignorant, as long as they live in their dreams, they can exist happily, yet they continue to break their chains."

A fire of anger flickered in Sun Wukong's heart.

Buddha Beads looked at Sun Wukong.

His eyes resembled stars blazing with flames.

"Are you angry?"

Buddha Beads asked.

It was an expression of anger and determination.

"I will unlock the chains."

Sun Wukong responded, "And grant you and your companions the same destruction!"

He now understood.

"Not just here, but other worlds as well."

Sun Wukong said, "I will break all your enclosures, granting freedom to all beings."

To fight like a hero, or to die like a coward.

This world, has given him the answer.
