The Tathāgata Must Fail

Chapter 254: Give It Your All

The battle in the sky had ceased.

Sun Wukong held a chain in his hand, with phoenix wings fluttering above his head in the wind.

He paid no attention to the shock of the Jade Emperor and the Buddha, his gaze sweeping across the land; Wanling City lay in ruins after the war, its usually bustling streets now collapsed, shattered, scarred.

"I can fix it."

A thought crossed Sun Wukong's mind, and he began his calculations.

He had taken control of Wanling's Spiritual Network, which had nourished Wanling City for many years and retained memories of the city.

Patterns flashing with Wanling's spiritual power emerged in Wukong's eyes, the collapsed buildings, the shattered streets, every corner of Wanling City, reversed like a reel of film, gradually being restored in his vision.

With just a thought from him, the entire Wanling City could be restored to its original state.

But...

Sun Wukong ultimately did not do so.

"This is not for me to do."

He said to himself.

For the old him, this line of thought would have been inconceivable.

But now, as the Wanling Immortal Path, the convergence of countless causes and effects in his heart made him understand one thing.

Pain must be healed by the people themselves.

Only by personally healing the pain can a better future be sought.

Sun Wukong looked up at the Jade Emperor and the Buddha.

"What are Immortals?"

He suddenly asked: "And what is Buddha?"

Neither of them answered.

The chains in Sun Wukong's hands suddenly ignited with Curse Flames, spreading to every Immortal.

"Imperial Brother, wait!"

The Jade Emperor hastily intervened: "What are your terms?"

If Sun Wukong were to set them ablaze, all these Immortals would perish.

"The Jade Seal."

Sun Wukong spoke: "Bring it out."

The Jade Emperor frowned slightly but still produced the Jade Seal.

Wukong then turned to look at the Buddha, who sighed and also brought it out.

With a wave of his hand, Sun Wukong shot out two lines of text, which entered the Jade Seal.

A resounding boom shook the Jade Seal.

The Jade Emperor saw that a new, unfamiliar Heavenly Rule had been added within the Jade Seal.

"This is the demand for a truce."

Sun Wukong said.

The Jade Emperor and the Buddha scrutinized the Heavenly Rule within the Jade Seal, both shocked, both wanting to erase it.

"Give it some thought."

The flames in Wukong's eyes burned as he said: "Accept its imprisonment, and I'll spare them!"

The Jade Emperor and the Buddha paused their movements, looking at the two blazing lines within the Jade Seal.

Those two different Heavenly Rules, one for each, were their imprisonment for the next fifty years.

The Heavenly Rules were not yet fully formed, but the Jade Emperor already felt the heavens and earth shaking, his control over the Southern Continent rapidly weakening.

"You want the Southern Continent!"

The Jade Emperor looked at Sun Wukong.

"Let us engage in a mortal game of strategy."

Wukong said: "You do enjoy chess, don't you?"

The Jade Emperor glanced at the sky full of Immortals, his brow furrowed slightly.

"Your Majesty."

Shangqing flew to his side, muttering a few words beside the Jade Emperor.

After brief hesitation, the Jade Emperor eventually nodded.

"Fine."

He released the restrictions, no longer preventing the Heavenly Rule from merging with the Jade Seal.

"Buddha."

Sun Wukong looked at the Buddha: "It's your turn."

The Buddha silently gazed at the Jade Seal.

If this Heavenly Rule was accepted, Buddhism would be at a disadvantage in a tripartite world.

"Fifty years without seeing me, this monkey really detests me."

The Buddha thought to himself.

Sun Wukong had restricted the Jade Emperor's control over the Southern Continent for fifty years, and what he gave him in return was denial.

On the Buddha's Heavenly Rule, there was only one line: for fifty years, Buddhism must not enter the Southern Continent.

Which meant—the upcoming contest, the Southern Continent would become a playing field only for the Heavenly Palace and Wanling.

Lingshan would be excluded from the second round of competition.

"Amitabha Buddha."

The Buddha contemplated for a moment before still accepting the new Heavenly Rules.

Watching a tiger fight from the safety of a mountain was, after all, an opportunity not to be missed.

After the establishment of the new Heavenly Rules, Sun Wukong retracted the chains.

Heavenly Immortals and Buddhas gained freedom, while the three Heavenly Venerates simultaneously turned their gaze towards the east, where one could hear the sounds of freedom emanating from the Spiritual Energy of that continent.

"Let's go."

The Jade Emperor and Buddha commanded, each with their own sentiments, and left with the host of Immortals and Buddhas.

"Brother."

Ao Luan soon flew to Sun Wukong's side: "Just like that, letting them go?"

Sun Wukong did not respond.

He stretched out his hand, looking at it as his vision blurred.

The time had come—

The risk of merging with the Tao with one's body was immense; the vast Heavenly Dao, with its infinite possibilities, infused within a person was enough to shatter any will.

Sun Wukong sighed and suddenly lost buoyancy, plummeting towards the ground.

Everyone was stunned.

"Brother!"

Ao Luan cried out, following him, catching Sun Wukong mid-air.

"Brother, what's wrong with you!"

She asked in a panic.

"It's okay."

Sun Wukong slightly closed his eyes: "I'm just a bit tired."

The Wanling Diagram unfolded from within him, radiating dazzling light.

Endless knowledge and boundless possibilities surged forth, threatening to pulverize Sun Wukong's soul.

Nevertheless, Sun Wukong's Tao would live on eternally, his soul undying, unable to be overwhelmed by anything.

As his soul resisted the onslaught of information from the Immortal Dao, it would furthermore evolve into an existence of higher wisdom.

But during this process…

He needed to slumber.

And this sleep could require an extended period.

"Brother."

Ao Luan, unaware of the truth, held on to Sun Wukong, shedding crystalline tears before everything he had poured himself into.

The tears fell on Sun Wukong's face.

"Why cry?"

Sun Wukong whispered.

"Be happy, Ao Luan…"

A warm glow emanated from him, stirring a breeze capable of dispersing the gloom and leading everything towards a distant future, scattering across the skies and the earth.

This was the light of joy.

"Be happy…"

"Wanling has succeeded…"

Sun Wukong whispered softly as he gradually drifted into a long slumber.

The joy from deep within his heart, alongside the cascading light, touched down on the ground.

Inhabitants of Wanling City gazed upon the shining light.

Strive, advance, my dear subjects…

A voice as if floating in the vast universe, reached into everyone's heart.

Learn, create, unleash all wisdom, forge those infinite possibilities—

The path has been paved—

Prove to me... that the future I await lies there…

The voice dissipated with the wind.

Some people couldn't help but start crying.

In the sky, Ao Luan held Sun Wukong, sobbing.

"He's just asleep."

The Grandmaster flew up, saying, "Let him rest for a while."

His disciple had shouldered too much pressure and responsibility.

Why cry over a well-deserved rest?

"Look at the ground, Ao Luan."

The Grandmaster spoke.

Ao Luan, with tearful eyes, looked towards the ground.

A brand-new structure stood tall amid the ruins.

"That's the library."

The Grandmaster declared: "The library of Wanling."

The countless lights falling from the sky transformed into a library.

That was the library leading to the Wanling Immortal Path.
