Xie Xiaofeng parked the car in front of the park entrance, and then he and Chen Hao, Ye Yuqiao, Tang Jing, and himself went to the lakeside of the park.
"It's this lake," Zhang Heng said as he stopped by the lake, his expression sorrowful.
Chen Hao walked up to Zhang Heng and asked, "Are you afraid of seeing ghosts now?"
Suddenly, a glint shot out from Zhang Heng's eyes as he said with a trembling voice, "I'm a little scared, but with you guys here, there should be no problem. By the way, why do you ask?"
Chen Hao smiled, then reached out with his left hand toward Zhang Heng's left eye, waving his fingers to temporarily open Zhang Heng's Yin Yang Eyes.
Immediately, Zhang Heng was startled and stumbled several steps backwards because at his feet by the lakeside, he saw numerous shadowy heads, robes billowing on the lake's surface, and pale hands.
These were all water spirits, attempting to drag the group standing by the lake into the water.
"Don't be afraid!" Chen Hao shouted to Zhang Heng, then used a soul-snatching rope to pull a female water spirit out of the water.
"Spare me, please, I haven't done anything wrong," the water spirit knelt on the ground and cried for mercy.
"I'm not here to punish you; I just want to ask you some questions."
The water spirit looked up at Chen Hao and then raised her hand pointing to Zhang Heng, asking, "Is it about this lad's girlfriend?"
Seeing the water spirit pointing at him, Zhang Heng was so scared that his body tensed, his heartbeat quickened, and he almost fainted due to the surge of vital energy in his body.
"Oh?" Chen Hao appeared surprised, "How do you know we came for his girlfriend's matter?"
"When he had people turn our world upside down, of course I remembered him well," the female ghost explained, "In fact, we kept telling them that the girl wasn't in the lake, but sadly no one could hear us."
"If not at the bottom of the lake, then where did his girlfriend go?"
"She was taken by a rainbow!" the water spirit said, "When his girlfriend approached the lakeside, many of us came to the shore wanting to pull her underwater. Unexpectedly, just as she reached the foot of the rainbow, she disappeared. I'm not lying to you, but many of us saw it with our own eyes."
Hearing what the female water spirit said, Chen Hao, Xie Xiaofeng, and Tang Jing all looked at each other, finding it somewhat unbelievable.
"Girlfriend, what do you think about this?" Chen Hao sent a coded message to Ye Yuqiao.
It was a while before Ye Yuqiao responded, "Oh, boyfriend, it might be true."
"Yuqiao, what are you thinking about? Why are you so distracted?"
"Nothing much, I'm probably just a bit tired," Ye Yuqiao explained.
After releasing the water spirit back into the lake, they approached Zhang Heng and said, "It seems that your girlfriend was really taken by a rainbow!"
"Yes!" Zhang Heng nodded firmly, "Now I will take you to meet that old man, he will tell you more about the discoveries regarding Rainbow Paradise."
Night fell.
After dinner, Chen Hao and his companions arrived at the door of a normal house in town.
After knocking for a long time, the door slowly opened, revealing an elderly man nearly eighty years old.
"Grandpa, have you eaten?" Zhang Heng greeted the old man politely, "Today I brought a few friends to see you."
After a moment of stunned silence, the grandpa nodded, his reaction and movements showing a bit of sluggishness.
"Zhang Heng, you're here. It rained today and there was a rainbow. Did you go looking for the rainbow?" the old man asked, his voice breathless.
"Boyfriend, do you think this old man will live much longer?" Ye Yuqiao's voice arose in Chen Hao's mind.
"Oh? I didn't expect you'd noticed this grandpa. I thought you were still daydreaming."
"What do you mean by that? Are you criticizing me?" Ye Yuqiao's face darkened.
Chen Hao didn't offer any further response but took Ye Yuqiao by the hand and walked into the house.
"Bastard, annoying, stinky boyfriend!" Ye Yuqiao looked at Chen Hao with a face full of grievance and scolded him.
Chen Hao's mouth twisted bitterly as he muttered to himself in his heart, "Alright, stop feeling wronged. I was at fault just now!"
Ye Yuqiao huffed lightly, then looped her arm through Chen Hao's.
Upon entering the hall, the grandfather invited everyone to take their seats and then Zhang Heng explained the purpose of their visit: to let Chen Hao and his group learn some things about Rainbow Paradise to see if these young Onmyoji could be of any help.
After hearing this, the grandfather sighed sorrowfully, took a black and white photo of himself and his wife off the wall, and handed it to Chen Hao, saying, "This old lady in the photo is my wife. It was taken fifteen years ago when we were at a class reunion. It was on that day that she disappeared from my world forever."
Upon hearing the grandfather's words, the four people, including Chen Hao, were immediately stunned.
After a long while, Chen Hao finally asked, "Grandfather, did a rainbow appear on the day when grandma disappeared too?"
"Yes!" The old man's tone was one of utter despair, "I remember at five o'clock in the afternoon, a heavy rain came down, and when it stopped at six, a rainbow appeared. After we old folks finished eating, someone suggested taking a walk by the river. When we got there and saw an open space, most of us had learned ballroom dancing, so we started to dance by the riverbank. With more than thirty people dancing together, it was quite lively. But after the dance, I realized my wife was gone!"
As he reached this part of the story, the old man's sobbing made the air in the room mournful, casting a sad atmosphere.
"Later, we searched everywhere nearby and even called the police, but we couldn't find my wife," the grandfather continued, "The police thought she might have accidentally fallen into the river, as we old folks were having too much fun and didn't hear anything. In the following days, I asked some boatmen friends to help search the river to see if we could find my wife."
As he spoke, the old man paused to catch his breath and took a few sips of water. Once he had regained his composure, he went on, "It wasn't until the fourth day that a man in his forties found me and asked if someone in my family had gone missing. After I told him it was my wife who was lost, he told me that his daughter had also suddenly disappeared three years before. However, his wife was there when it happened and watched as their daughter disappeared into the rainbow. His wife immediately phoned him about the incident. By the time he arrived at the scene, his wife had also vanished, and the seven-colored rainbow had disappeared."
Chen Hao suddenly nodded in realization upon hearing the grandfather's story, saying, "So, Grandfather, you heard about Rainbow Paradise from that middle-aged man? What happened to him afterwards?"
Following that, the grandfather told Chen Hao and his group that after meeting the middle-aged man that day, the man invited him to his home the next day. In the middle-aged man's home, the grandfather met with a dozen families that had experienced similar disappearances - each family's situation was the same, with someone going missing when a rainbow appeared. The middle-aged man brought everyone together, forming a private organization dedicated to finding Rainbow Paradise, which was the origin of Rainbow Paradise.
According to their investigation, they discovered that whenever a seven-colored rainbow appeared, somebody would mysteriously disappear. In Rainbow Town, a seven-colored rainbow appeared one to two times each year, so they decided to organize a group to chase after the rainbow following the summer thunderstorms.
But not every time would a rainbow appear, and even if one did, it wasn't always a seven-colored rainbow; and even if it was a seven-colored one, reaching its base before it vanished was still problematic. Sometimes it would only appear for a few minutes, and occasionally only the ends of the rainbow were visible amid the clouds, which meant most of the time, their attempts ended in failure. Gradually, a few families dropped out.
The grandfather had originally persisted, but after seven years, he had to give up due to health reasons.
On the tenth anniversary of his wife's disappearance, five years ago, on a night when a seven-colored rainbow appeared, the grandfather tried to contact the middle-aged man and the others who were still holding on, but he couldn't reach any of them.
"They must have found the seven-colored rainbow and gone to Rainbow Paradise!" the grandfather said with a smile, his old eyes filled with envy. After a pause, he sighed again, "If I were just five years younger, maybe I could've gone with them to Rainbow Paradise and seen my wife again."
Seeing the old man's mood becoming unstable again, Zhang Heng immediately raised his hand to pat his back and softly consoled him, "Grandpa, don't be too sad. Rest assured, if I ever get to Rainbow Paradise, I will definitely bring your grandma back for you."
"Mm! Thank you, thank you!" the grandfather said with tearful gratitude.
Seeing the two of them like this, Chen Hao felt uneasy, thinking that if it were truly possible to return, then why hadn't those people come back yet. Perhaps it wasn't Rainbow Paradise on the other side, but rather Rainbow Hell, or perhaps there was no Rainbow Paradise at all and those people had already been obliterated by the mysterious forces within the rainbow.
"Everyone," Zhang Heng looked at the group sitting opposite him and pleaded in a tone of helplessness, "Do you have any way to help me successfully find Rainbow Paradise?"
"Has a seven-colored rainbow appeared this year?" Chen Hao asked.
Zhang Heng shook his head repeatedly and explained, "Not yet this year."
Chen Hao nodded. After pondering for a while, he said to Zhang Heng, "I can only guarantee to get you to that seven-colored rainbow, but I can't assure you of what comes after, like whether you can make it back alive."
Hearing Chen Hao say this, Zhang Heng was overjoyed and exclaimed, "Really? That's fantastic! All I wish is to reach the seven-colored rainbow!"
..
Three days later, a thunderstorm hit Rainbow Town and a rainbow appeared, but it was only a three-colored rainbow.
Five days later, another thunderstorm struck, but no rainbow appeared after the rain.
Then, on the eleventh day of Chen Hao's visit to Rainbow Town..
