Clang!
The discarded axe blade bounced off the body of the heat-melting axe. Yan Luo silently installed a new blade.
Today marked his fifth day in the Abyss. Supplies were severely depleted; fewer than two hundred bullets remained, grenades were exhausted, only eleven stun grenades were left, and though some landmines remained, they were not plentiful.
The demon tide was approaching. The activity of the demons had become much more intense. Yan Luo didn't even need to deliberately hunt for their tracks; they would just leap out before him.
In these past few days, Yan Luo had barely finished one battle and had no time to reinstall spent equipment before other demons emerged.
In these five days, Yan Luo's longest nonstop combat session must have been five hours; if it were an Engraver, they'd have long since collapsed from exhaustion.
Fortunately, even though Yan Luo didn't have special abilities, his physical prowess far exceeded that of a typical Engraver, so lengthy battles didn't impose too heavy a burden on him.
After one such battle, Yan Luo rested for about two hours and fully recovered his stamina.
However, if supplies continued to be consumed at this rate, if Yan Luo didn't plan to leave the Abyss, he'd have no choice but to engage in melee combat with the demons.
There was only one grappling gun left in the backpack and motorcycle sidebox. Losing a grappling gun meant losing more than half his mobility, a disadvantage in combat.
So, he was now considering whether to leave the Abyss.
The stimulant's effects wore off, and Yan Luo began experiencing symptoms like difficulty breathing and dizziness. He furrowed his brow, opened the trunk, and saw his strong stimulants were nearly used up, with only six left.
It seemed he really had to leave.
Yan Luo involuntarily sighed.
For other Hunters, entering the Abyss before a demon tide could mean big profits, but for Yan Luo, such conditions didn't yield much money at all.
He estimated that the materials in his Space Box were worth at most two to three million, not even half of this Abyss hunting mission's target.
Fortunately, Yan Luo had a clear understanding of his own capabilities and knew that without the aid of equipment, he couldn't deal with lethal-level demons.
If that's the case, it's better to return to the Blue Star.
Placing the heat-melting axe in the weapon case, Yan Luo mounted his motorcycle and headed toward the Dark Forest.
Halfway there, he suddenly received a broadcast.
[This is the Sky-sword Squad; we've encountered a City-breaking Level Demon. Requesting support! Requesting support! Hunters without the means to deal with a City-breaking Level Demon, please withdraw immediately. If you encounter a Sequence Three or higher expert, please relay this message to them, I beg you!]
Hearing this, Yan Luo's heart sank.
Even City-breaking Level Demons were active now. This was the fifth City-breaking Level Demon he'd encountered on this Abyss hunt.
Usually, he wouldn't encounter even one, but now they kept appearing one after the other.
Without hesitation, Yan Luo turned around and left.
He would pass the message to the Sky-sword Squad but nothing more.
Currently, he had a strong allure for City-breaking Level Demons; just getting a bit closer, Yan Luo could assure that the demon hunting the Sky-sword Squad would turn to pursue him.
Trying to escape by using other City-breaking Level Demons as he did before was almost impossible.
Even with the heightened activity of City-breaking Level Demons now!
However, just as Yan Luo turned his bike around to distance himself from the Sky-sword Squad, his perceptual module suddenly picked up a massive object.
Yan Luo was stunned, turning to gaze into the distance.
Dust was rising in the distance; something was running fast, kicking up clouds of dust.
Soon after, the large figure in the distance paused, suddenly veering toward Yan Luo.
"Damn!"
Yan Luo's eyes widened in disbelief.
The demon was originally running toward the Dark Forest, but upon possibly sensing him, it turned and ran towards him.
Now what?
Yan Luo didn't immediately head toward the Sky-sword Squad's location but activated his goggles' distant vision feature to carefully observe the demon running from afar.
Upon clearly seeing the demon's face, Yan Luo instantly swung his bike toward the Sky-sword Squad.
Its shoulder height was 3.8 meters, body length about four meters, and entirely black—a Shadow Wolf.
Without doubt, City-breaking Level!
Yan Luo used the vehicle's radio to send a message to the Sky-sword Squad: [This is Yan Luo. I've also encountered a City-breaking Level Demon. Lure your demon to me, and I'll make them fight each other!]
To escape from a City-breaking Level Demon's clutches, Yan Luo had to find hunters of Sequence Three or above or locate another City-breaking Level Demon.
The City-breaking Level Shadow Wolf noticed his presence, but luckily he had information on another City-breaking Level Demon.
[Yan Luo?!]
A gasp came over the headset. It seemed someone from the Sky-sword Squad recognized him.
A couple of seconds later, Yan Luo received a reply: [Alright, we're coming your way now!]
A Hunter will seize any chance to survive, and so would the Sky-sword Squad.
They understood Yan Luo's plan, that is to have the two City-breaking Level Demons fight each other, while they figured out how to escape.
While heading toward the Sky-sword Squad, Yan Luo was also observing the relentless pursuit of the Shadow Wolf, confirming it wouldn't relinquish the chase, couldn't help but sigh.
Before long, Yan Luo saw an armored vehicle ahead, followed by a massive demon.
It was a giant elephant, shoulder height of fifteen meters, and body length reached a staggering thirty meters, a true giant!
Watching that giant beast, Yan Luo couldn't help but breathe rapidly, feeling the tension.
Little wonder the Sky-sword Squad was so panicked; visually, it was indeed terrifying, looking even more frightening than the City-breaking Level Shadow Wolf.
At that moment, Yan Luo abruptly swung his body around, drew a shotgun with a backhand, and fired towards the direction behind him.
A lesser Shadow Wolf leaped from his shadow, colliding headfirst with the dark barrel, with its head shattered by the muzzle's eruption.
The lesser Shadow Wolf shattered into a shadow, dissipating into the air.
Yan Luo glanced at the Shadow Wolf chasing him and immediately accelerated the motorcycle, the wheels spinning rapidly, speeding straight forward.
"I'll lure them away!" Yan Luo shouted.
The Sky-sword Squad panicked at this sight.
They assumed Yan Luo intended to use them as bait, to attract the Shadow Wolf's attention and then escape on his own—even though Yan Luo had already told them what he intended to do.
Curses filled the armored vehicle in no time.
But just seconds later, a Hunter glanced back and saw the massive Earth Giant giving up on chasing them, turning towards the direction of Yan Luo's escape.
The swearing stopped instantly, then everyone in the vehicle began to praise Yan Luo, though their words carried a hint of sarcasm.
"Running well!"
"Good luck, Yan Luo, thank you for your help. We will surely carry on your legacy and strive to eliminate the Abyss!"
"Run! Hurry! Otherwise, the demons will catch you!"
The radio was filled with mockery, causing Yan Luo to squint his eyes, then swivel his bike around for a 180-degree drift.
He wouldn't let that slide with those folks!
I helped you, yet you guys mock me. Fine, wait for death, then!
Yan Luo rode towards the Shadow Wolf and Earth Giant, the two City-breaking Level Demons approaching to flank him.
As the motorcycle entered the Shadow Wolf's superpower deployment range, the City-breaking Level Shadow Wolf leapt up like a droplet falling into an ocean, merging into the shadow of a rock.
The next moment, it burst out from Yan Luo's shadow, jaws snapping towards him.
Yan Luo chuckled. He pressed the grappling hook's release button, pulled out the preheated heat-melting axe from his backpack with a backhand, slammed his body around, and swung the axe in a full circle toward the Shadow Wolf's head.
"Fall for me—now!"
