It shouldn't be the Giant - Grendel.
Through a god-view perspective, Duncan observed and discovered that the monster's skin was wrinkled like a hardened keratin layer, layered like scales, thicker than many leather armors, and without any special name tag.
However, Grendel is a name given by the natives, so perhaps it hasn't truly made a name for itself yet.
According to legend, the monster plagued Denmark for twelve years, only encountering Beowulf, who then slew it, a few decades later.
"But it can't be ruled out that it has already been born."
"Giants have a very long lifespan."
With this in mind, Duncan hesitated to act rashly.
It's not that Duncan couldn't defeat this giant monster, but rather if it really was a young Grendel, then it would have a powerful banshee mother behind it, as Beowulf's famous battle was killing two monsters.
With a god-view perspective, Duncan didn't mind observing a little longer to see if this monster had any other companions.
——"Legendary Level 4/8." (Received a point of Roman legendary level.)
Huh?
How did I suddenly gain an additional point of legendary level?
In Duncan's god-view perspective, the giant monster was still sound asleep inside the cave, yet he suddenly gained an additional point of legendary level.
"Did Anya spread my fame to Rome?"
He was temporarily unsure of what happened.
But with an additional point of legendary level, as long as he could kill this monster, Duncan would be able to collect enough to engrave Dragon Bloodline's legendary level.
The giant monster continued to sleep soundly.
Its cave was very deep, with a rather complex interior, even a god-view perspective couldn't see through it entirely. But its mark was a three-star silvery-gray, indicating it was the strongest supernatural monster Duncan has encountered so far, requiring a bit of risk to deal with.
"Whether it's giants from Norse legends or trolls from Saxon myths, they're all thick-skinned and rumored to be immune to blades and guns."
"Wouldn't the vow keeper be a bit inadequate?"
Duncan scouted the nearby terrain in search of a battlefield advantageous to him. Giants tend to be clumsy, so he needed an open area for kiting and maneuvering.
He definitely wouldn't enter the cave; what business does a sharpshooter have inside a cave?
While Duncan was searching along the coastline for a suitable ambush site, a red light suddenly flashed in the projected image, and a new hostile target appeared.
——Sea Serpent (Monster Offspring) (Two-star Silvery-gray) [Hostile].
At this moment, the winds and waves began to rise, and in the waves of the distant sea, a gigantic sea serpent over ten meters long emerged. Its grotesque head resembled the massive serpent head of Jörmungandr from tales of war gods, covered in a thick keratin layer, with a body somewhat like a giant ribbonfish.
——Sea Demon (Mermaid) (Siren) (One-star Gold) [Neutral].
In the waves of the sea.
Under the god-view perspective, figures that were half-human, half-fish appeared, emerging from the sea to avoid the chase of the sea serpent and diving into a rocky area.
The water was shallower here.
Mermaids could move freely, but due to its large size, the sea serpent was unable to maneuver well, and unable to give chase, it circled outside the rocks.
"Is the sea monster hunting the mermaids?"
"Is this how exciting it is in the Nordics?"
Duncan had already brought out the Nord Bow, standing on a rock, with the fierce wind blowing, causing his hair to fly. He tried it and then put the Nord Bow away again.
The wind was too strong.
Only the wind arrow powered by magic from the Nord Bow could ignore the interference of wind direction; ordinary arrows were completely useless at this moment, having no power when shot into the water.
But Duncan had little magic power, only enough to shoot one arrow.
A beautiful song began to play.
The sea demons who had escaped into the rock-strewn area began to gather, and they seemed to notice Duncan on the shore, with the lead sea demon whispering a chant, seemingly trying to lure him over.
"Detected magic flow!"
"Detected supernatural power 'Enchanting Melody'."
"Willpower immunity passed."
"Invalid!"
The sea demons or mermaids of Norse legends aren't necessarily good things; beautiful but dangerous, there are many tales of sea demons causing harm.
However, they currently registered as Neutral Units, and Duncan trusted the judgment of the god-view perspective.
For now, these sea demons showed no hostility.
The gathered sea demons circled the rocks, seemingly not expecting Duncan to ignore their song, and then the leading sea demon cautiously approached with the aid of the wind and waves, carefully peeking out a head.
These sea demons had enchanting appearances, with long, wet hair hanging down, their upper bodies unclad, looking no different from ordinary people, but their lower halves were fish tails, not ordinary ones, being rather narrow and about three meters long, giving them an overall length of about three to four meters.
"I have a feeling I'm subconsciously taking over Beowulf's legendary storyline."
By now, the winds and waves were growing fiercer.
Another giant sea monster appeared outside the rocks, and there were quite a few of these monsters, far more common than elsewhere.
Killing a two-star silvery-gray enemy shouldn't be too difficult for Duncan.
But underwater combat wasn't something he was entirely confident in.
Duncan had slain many elite Saxon pirates, and his swimming skills were top-notch, but the issue was that underwater it was difficult to exert force, reducing his effectiveness.
"Is there any way to lure it over?"
Duncan's gaze turned to the sea demons, cornered with nowhere to hide, they were only about one or two hundred meters from Duncan.
The sea demons, surprised at not being able to enchant Duncan, were inching closer.
"I have underwater breathing."
Duncan calculated the distance and sprinted along the direction of the rocky coastline. As the sea demons witnessed him moving, they followed suit, emitting a series of low whimpering cries as if pleading for his help. The last time he encountered such a situation, it was the forest nymphs seeking help from Crow Queen-Triss.
"Lead those monsters over here!"
Duncan didn't care if they understood him or not; he could only give it a try. If the sea monsters approached the cliff and sea trench near the coast, with one jump slash, he might just instant kill them.
Missing this chance would make hunting them in the ocean even more challenging.
Plop!
Plop!
Five sea demons in total dared to leap from the rocks as their enemies drew nearer. As the waves crashed down, the massive sea monsters and serpents converged upon them, forcing the five sea demons to flee desperately, unaware of how long they'd been chased, though all appeared somewhat breathless.
Pfft.
Blood splattered everywhere!
One of the younger-looking sea demons was a step too slow, swept up by the wind and waves and crashed into the rocks, failing to keep up with her companions. The next moment, a bloody maw appeared with sharp teeth biting into her. The sea monster devoured her whole, crunching her in half on the spot.
The part of the sea demon with the fish tail was eaten, leaving only a woman's upper body with her intestines and viscera spilling out. Blood mixed with seawater spread around, and her bewitching face was consumed by pain, emitting shrill screams. Before she could climb the rocks, another sea monster swallowed her whole.
Crunch, crunch.
The head of the sea demon was crushed, with bloody foam spreading through the seawater.
The slaughter continued!
The two sea monster serpents, still unsatisfied after feeding, continued chasing the sea demons. Their long, slender bodies could enter the shallows with the help of waves, but they weren't agile enough to avoid the rocks, making them appear slightly clumsy.
The four surviving sea demons had almost no power to resist, lacking weapons, and their song couldn't affect these monsters, akin to the higher food chain preying on the lower.
Ah!
A piercing scream resounded once more.
The coastal gales and waves also impacted the sea demons' movements. One glamorous sea demon with golden hair was swept by the wind and waves, smashing against the rocks and got a severe laceration on her waist, stained with blood. The blood's scent provoked the sea monster serpents, eliciting a mania, throwing caution to injury and surging ahead.
Blood and visceral rain filled the sky!
Two of the serpent-like sea monsters each bit a side of the demon, slicing them in half with chilling cries, consuming the remains in an instant.
This was naked predation.
The three remaining sea demons were nearly paralyzed with fear. They frantically swam toward Duncan, diving into a fissure beneath the rocks. It was a dead end, but deep enough to climb ashore along the rocks.
At that moment, Duncan halted on the nearly six-meter-high rock cliff.
Phew!
He took a deep breath, sparing no glance at the remaining three sea demons, and concentrated instead on whether the two sea monster serpents would follow.
They're coming!
The thirstiest sea monster serpent crossed the rocks with its serpentine body—about sixteen or seventeen meters long, as voluminous as a titan python—with a head diameter nearing 1.2 meters, full of sharp teeth, and bloodthirsty eyes, charging like a predator into the sea trench.
The final three sea demons let out terrified screams!
—Great Frenzy.
His breathing grew heavier, and his blood coursed like a torrent, the heart thundering like a war drum.
Duncan's muscles coiled like robust marble, his figure leaping from the several-meter-high boulders. His Oathkeeper sword in hand turned into brilliant cold light, stabbing through the monster serpent's skull with a pfft.
Instant kill!
Duncan plunged into the water, struggling to stabilize himself. Even with the enormous strength of the dying sea monster serpent, he couldn't retrieve Oathkeeper, but he maintained composure. Facing the oncoming sea monster serpent, he swung his fist mightily at the monster's head.
Bang!
A dull thud.
The serpent's skull seemed to have been hammered heavily, even denting in part. Its mark showed a fleeting dizziness, yet its massive body instinctually coiled around Duncan, seemingly intent on dragging him to the depths for a deadly twist.
Duncan grabbed the franc gun from his waist, shadowy axe cleaving down, spurting blood, spiraling hard as it almost gutted the creature.
He grasped a rock with one hand using astounding strength, imprinting a clear handprint on the rocks!
"Die for me!"
Duncan roared to the sky, supporting himself with one arm, while the other reached inside the serpent's opened stomach, grabbing—who knows what—be it organs or bones, any leverage would suffice. With his right leg braced against the rocks, the terrifying brute strength of Great Frenzy, Giant Strength, and Holy Grail's Blood burst forth in an instant!
Boom!
His figure astonishingly leapt from the trench, clutching the sea monster serpent's head and slamming it against the rocks.
At that moment, it was truly a force beyond ordinary people.
Blood and viscera were sprayed all over, covering Duncan almost entirely in blood!
Bam! Bam! Bam!
Once, twice, and thrice, when Duncan finally relented, the sea monster serpent's head had been smashed to smithereens, with brain matter all over the place. Not far from him, three surviving exquisite sea demons huddled with fear.
It's terrifying!
It's brutal!
Even the heroes of the mythical era probably weren't any better.
Duncan breathed slightly, sitting on a piece of rock. His waist and abdomen had mild scrapes, fortunately spared from the monster serpent's bite.
Plop.
One of the gorgeous sea demons dived underwater, emerging not long after with Oathkeeper's sword in hand, swimming to the shore, almost crawling, eyes filled with reverence and awe, kneeling like a human by the rocks, presenting Oathkeeper to Duncan.
The other two sea demons also swam over, busily approaching, each holding a serpent's gallbladder from the sea monster serpent.
Duncan slowly stood up, picking up Oathkeeper, sheathing it.
The three mermaid-like sea demons still knelt by his feet, refusing to leave, even wrapping their slender, fair arms around his calves, emitting a lingering and melodious chant.
