Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)

Everyone present had a visible change in their expression.

Gu Jiao’s standing in the household was now distinguished; even little Yiyi happily let her pinch her tiny feet, so any small movement of hers could stir up great waves throughout the estate.

Xiao Heng was the first to react. He quickly stood up and went to her side. Gently stroking her back, he bent down and asked, “What’s wrong? Do you feel uncomfortable anywhere?”

Gu Jiao endured the queasiness in her stomach and said, “I suddenly feel a bit nauseous.”

Princess Xinyang’s eyes instantly lit up with a sharp gleam.

Xiao Ji’s gaze also began to subtly change.

One had given birth herself, the other had had a woman give him children. In any case, both had been through this before, and compared to Xiao Heng, who was just a novice in such matters, their reactions were much keener.

Princess Xinyang said to Xiao Ji, “Step outside for a moment.”

Clearly, there was a private matter to discuss. Xiao Ji was not like that block of wood General Qian; he understood what was going on.

He asked, “Do you mean step outside, or call for an imperial physician?”

Princess Xinyang paused, taken aback, and gave him a rather surprised look, as though saying, so your brain actually works this well?

“Tsk.” Xiao Ji caught her gaze and shook his head with self-mockery.

First having Chang Jing “collect his body” , then having his intelligence doubted by Princess Xinyang, all in one day. Life truly was tragic as blood.

With a long sigh, he left.

Princess Xinyang turned to Gu Jiao and asked seriously, “Have you had your monthly period this month?”

“Hm?” Gu Jiao froze.

“No.” Xiao Heng answered for her.

Exercising his rights as a husband every day, he certainly remembered that since their marriage, she had not once had her period.

He had never been a father before, so his reaction was somewhat slow in this area. But he was good at reading expressions. Since his mother asked this, suddenly everything became clear to him.

“Mother, could it be that you mean…”

Princess Xinyang neither confirmed nor denied it. “If your period hasn’t come, didn’t you ever suspect anything? Especially you, JiaoJiao. You’re a physician yourself!”

Gu Jiao said, “My period has been irregular for the past half year.”

Whether it was because of puberty or because of the toll taken on her body by battles and overexertion, her cycles had become unstable this year. Sometimes skipping two months in a row, sometimes coming twice in one month.

At first, Xiao Heng had kept track of her little days, but once her cycle became irregular, he could no longer keep up.

Princess Xinyang was astonished. “Even so, you could still conceive… It must be thanks to my fertility tonic!”

“Cough!”

Xiao Heng choked hard.

He could not bear to tell his mother that she had only started taking that medicine after the two of them had begun taking precautions.

He thought silently: It was only that one time…

That one clumsy, awkward, not-very-good first time, and yet it had worked? And afterward, their efforts at contraception had all been for nothing?

This really was——

Hard to put into words.

Wait a moment. It was only dry heaving. That didn’t necessarily mean she was pregnant.

Perhaps his mother was just rejoicing too early.

Xiao Heng poured Gu Jiao a cup of warm water and had the dish of braised pork knuckle taken away.

Princess Xinyang preferred lighter food. During the years when Xiao Heng was away, she had turned vegetarian, and after becoming pregnant with Little Yiyi she resumed eating meat to get enough nutrition. Even now, while still nursing, she could not do without fish soup and similar dishes.

Overall, however, her diet was not greasy.

Dishes like pork knuckle and braised pork were mainly prepared for the children’s tastes.

Out of concern that the two of them might not be used to the heavy food, she had the servant girl bring out some pickles and preserved vegetables instead.

The imperial physician arrived very quickly. Before the meal was even finished, he was already waiting in the courtyard.

“I’m full.” Gu Jiao said.

“I’m full too.” Xiao Heng said.

Today, since Yu Jin was not around, Princess Xinyang summoned other servants to tidy the room, while she herself took the two children, intending to meet the imperial physicians in the side chamber next door.

However, as soon as the three of them stepped over the threshold, they were stunned by the scene before their eyes.

A dense, dark crowd of heads filled the place.

Had the entire Imperial Physician Bureau been emptied out?

They didn’t even leave a single night-duty physician for the Emperor?

Xiao Ji turned around, chest puffed out, and declared to the imperial physicians, “One at a time!”

That night, Gu Jiao did nothing except sit in a chair and let one physician after another feel her pulse.

In the end, every single one of them reached the same conclusion: A happy pulse.(Indicates pregnancy)

“Gentlemen, you have worked hard.” Princess Xinyang gave each imperial physician a hefty red envelope, and all their complaints about being dragged over with Marquis Xuanping’s blade at their necks vanished into thin air.

“Alright, the two of you should also go back and rest early.” She told Xiao Heng and Gu Jiao, “Be careful in the first three months, and don’t overindulge yourselves too much.”

To forbid them completely was impossible, so she had to take a step back.

Xiao Heng coughed lightly. “Understood, Mother.”

He held Gu Jiao’s hand and led her back to Lanting Courtyard.

Little Jing Kong and Shangguan Qing were out, not at home.

Lanting Courtyard was very quiet.

The two of them strolled along the stone path, heavy with the fragrance of flowers. When some servants came forward intending to salute, Xiao Heng lifted his hand slightly, and they understood at once, withdrawing silently without a sound.

Yu Ya’er came from the veranda with freshly dried clothes in her arms. She had just opened her mouth to call “young miss” when the older female servant beside her tugged her sleeve.

The servant shook her head at her.

“Oh.” Yu Ya’er was not slow-witted; she turned and went back to her own room.

“Just now… was that morning sickness?” Xiao Heng asked.

From the mealtime until now, Gu Jiao had not said a word.

Unable to gauge her thoughts, he could only try to break the silence.

Gu Jiao gave a soft “mm”, “I suppose… it should be.”

Since she was at least willing to speak, Xiao Heng secretly let out a breath of relief. Turning to look at her still-calm expression, he could not tell whether her heart was truly as composed as she appeared.

“Actually, having a child wouldn’t be bad.” He spoke softly. “If it’s a boy, then he’d be like Jing Kong or Xiaobao. If it’s a girl, then she’d be like Yiyi. Thinking about it that way… isn’t it rather cute?”

Gu Jiao gave him a surprised look. “You actually said Jing Kong is cute.”

Xiao Heng froze. “Uh… did I say the wrong thing? He’s not cute?”

If he isn’t cute, then how had you been tricked by him at the start? And why do you let him cling to you every day without feeling annoyed?

Gu Jiao said, “He is cute. It’s just rare to hear those words come out of your mouth.”

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
