Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)

When Xiao Ji came out of the study, he saw Elder Li directing the servants as they moved the betrothal gifts.

Xiao Ji still had a fairly strong impression of him. When he and Chang Jing had first arrived on Hidden Night Island, it was this man who had received them.

Elder Li’s full name was Li Jiangping. He served as an elder of the Hidden Night Sect, and Xiao Ji addressed him politely as Elder Li.

“Lord Marquis Xiao.” Li Jiangping smiled, cupped his hands, and bowed to him.

Li Jiangping had been with the Hidden Night Sect for many years and was highly valued by Chang Kun. Not only was his martial skill formidable and his loyalty unwavering, but he also possessed a meticulous mind despite his rough exterior. He was a rare master of both brawn and subtlety.

More importantly, he cared deeply for Chang Jing.

Chang Jing glanced at Elder Li, then said to Xiao Ji, “This time, I really have to thank Elder Li for speaking on my behalf, otherwise my father would never have agreed to this marriage.”

Xiao Ji burned with fury. “There was never a marriage to begin with!”

Chang Jing looked a little aggrieved. “What I meant was, it gave me an excuse to come see you… also, you still owe me several boxes of marbles.”

Xiao Ji’s body jolted. So this was your real purpose in leaving the island!

He really didn’t want to see this brat anymore. With his hands clasped behind his back, he stormed off in anger.

But then he suddenly remembered something, turned back, and sternly warned, “You are not allowed to let Yiyi play with marbles! They’re dangerous!”

Chang Jing replied, “The Princess already gave instructions. None of the little things can be given to her.”

Xiao Ji clenched his fists. So you and Qin Fengwen are that close! Looks like you’re really defying the heavens!

Li Jiangping gave an awkward laugh and turned to Xiao Ji. “Lord Marquis Xiao… you see, the thing is…”

Xiao Ji said flatly, “You also know the truth now. He only came out here to play. Take the betrothal gifts back with you. I, this Marquis, will not form a marriage alliance with Hidden Night Island.”

Li Jiangping hurriedly said, “Lord Marquis, please don’t be so quick to refuse.”

Xiao Ji’s voice was icy. “What? My daughter is only eight months old, and you really expect me to marry her off already?”

Li Jiangping quickly waved his hands and forced a smile. “No, no, that’s not what I mean. It’s like this, the young master had no other choice but to resort to this trick in order to see you again. In his heart, he respects you as a father. But if the sect leader finds out about this enormous lie, he’ll surely punish him severely. I’ve thought of a compromise that won’t trouble you, Lord Marquis, and will also spare the young master from punishment.”

“What compromise?” Xiao Ji asked.

Li Jiangping revealed his idea. “Why not have you, Lord Marquis, select a well-bred and virtuous young woman from the capital, adopt her as your foster daughter, and send her to marry into Hidden Night Island? What do you think?”

Mm, JiaoJiao is also Duke An’s adopted daughter. She married Ah Heng under the name of Duke An’s daughter.

Xiao Ji felt that this was a pretty good idea.

“Do you agree?” He asked Chang Jing.

Chang Jing said, “If you can find one that I like, then I’ll agree.”

So Xiao Ji asked him, “And what kind do you like?”

Chang Jing thought carefully for a moment, then said, “Someone like the Princess…”

Xiao Ji’s fist came down, leaving a large bump on the top of Chang Jing’s head.

……

Li Jiangping’s idea wasn’t bad, so for now, Xiao Ji arranged for him and the disciples of Hidden Night Island to stay at the Marquis Estate.

The betrothal gifts were placed into the storeroom, with the key entrusted to Li Jiangping himself.

Xiao Ji’s stance was very clear, these things are still yours from Hidden Night Island; I will not accept them.

While Li Jiangping was directing his disciples to move the betrothal gifts, a small accident happened. His hand pressed onto a rusty nail and nearly went straight through his palm.

The news reached the Princess Mansion just as the family was about to sit down to dinner.

Gu Jiao stood up and said to Princess Xinyang, Xiao Ji, Xiao Heng, and Chang Jing, “You all go ahead and eat. I’ll go over to take a look.”

“I’ll go with you.” Xiao Heng also put down his chopsticks. “Do we need to bring the medicine chest?”

“Yes.” Gu Jiao said.

“Wait here for me.” Xiao Heng went to Lanting Courtyard to fetch the little medicine chest, then left together with Gu Jiao and Chang Jing for the Marquis Estate.

Outside the storeroom, Li Jiangping sat on a small stool, his injured left hand already wrapped in a cloth by a disciple of the Hidden Night Sect.

“Let me see.” Gu Jiao said to him.

Li Jiangping looked at Gu Jiao in astonishment, then at Chang Jing.

Chang Jing explained, “The young madame is a physician.”

Li Jiangping suddenly understood. “Ah, I see.”

But perhaps because of the difference between men and women, he gave an awkward smile and said somewhat embarrassedly, “Then… I’ll trouble the young madame.”

Xiao Heng had someone bring over a table and set the little medicine chest on top of it.

Gu Jiao opened the little medicine chest and took out saline solution to clean his wound.

“Show me what kind of nail it was.” She said to the Hidden Night Sect disciple.

The disciple stepped forward and handed her a bloody nail wrapped in a clean cloth.

Gu Jiao frowned. “It really is a rusty nail…”

It looked like he would need a tetanus shot.

Gu Jiao checked inside her kit. She had it, but it wasn’t the tetanus immunoglobulin, it was the kind that required a skin test first.

“You’ll have to bear with it.” Gu Jiao said to Li Jiangping.

Li Jiangping looked curiously at Gu Jiao’s little medicine chest, dazed. “A-alright. But tell me, young madame, what sort of treatment method is this? I’ve never seen anything like it before.”

Gu Jiao replied, “It’s something created by my master. It isn’t convenient to disclose further.”

Li Jiangping chuckled, tactfully dropping the matter, and instead said, “Then your master must be a reclusive expert. Our Hidden Night Island’s very first Island Lord was also a man of great mastery.”

“Chang Jing.” Xiao Heng called.

Chang Jing understood and turned to the disciples of Hidden Night Sect. “You all withdraw first. I’ll call for you later.”

“Yes.”

Everyone retreated.

Only then did Gu Jiao take out the injection. After administering the skin test, Li Jiangping grimaced and pulled a whole series of pained expressions.

A quarter of an hour later, no adverse reaction appeared.

Gu Jiao proceeded to give him the tetanus injection.

Once again, Li Jiangping contributed another round of exaggerated pained expressions.

Chang Jing said to him, “Uncle Li, it’s enough for you to know about the young madame’s medical skill. Don’t speak of it to outsiders.”

Li Jiangping wiped the cold sweat that pain had drawn out on his forehead and said, “A man without sin, yet guilty because of the treasure he holds. I understand. Don’t worry.”

Chang Jing stayed behind to look after Li Jiangping, while the young couple returned to the Princess Mansion.

As soon as Gu Jiao sat down, she noticed a bowl of medicine had appeared in front of her.

Princess Xinyang said evenly, “The medicine just finished brewing. Drink it first, it will be more effective if taken before meals. I asked the imperial physician.”

Gu Jiao secretly sighed for her.

No prescription would be of any use, after all, little dudu was simply that powerful.

Xiao Heng looked at the inky-black decoction. Even without tasting it, he could guess how bitter it was. Leaning closer to Gu Jiao’s ear, he whispered, “How about not drinking it?”

“It’s fine.” She downed it in gulps, nearly gagging after finishing. “Today’s medicine is really bitter.”

Princess Xinyang was puzzled. “Bitter? Isn’t it the same as yesterday’s?”

Xiao Heng could no longer bear to watch his beloved wife tormented by the bitter medicine. He decided to tell his mother the truth. “Mother, actually, we’re not planning to——”

Just then, a glossy, fragrant, tender braised pork hock was set before Gu Jiao, glistening with sauce.

It was even garnished with her favorite little chili peppers.

But the moment Gu Jiao caught a whiff of it, she suddenly turned away and dry-heaved.

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
