"Long Yi, take Jing Kong with you and get in the carriage first." Xiao Heng instructed Long Yi.
Without a word, Long Yi scooped up the little one and swiftly went to board Xiao Heng’s carriage.
Xiao Heng’s carriage was parked right beside the Crown Prince’s. As Long Yi passed by, the Crown Prince, who had been unconscious, began to groggily awaken, managing to open his mouth weakly, "Somebody——"
Long Yi didn’t even lift an eyelid. With a flick of his finger, he sent a burst of internal force that instantly knocked the Crown Prince out once more.
Holding Little Jing Kong, Long Yi settled into the carriage.
Now, only Xiao Heng, Gu Jiao, Gu Chengfeng, and Liao Chen remained in the alley.
Liao Chen slowly picked himself up, his body aching as though it had nearly fallen apart. He hadn’t sustained any injuries in his fight with Long Yi, but thanks to his own disciple’s shout, he had ended up with a bruised and battered face.
Where was he supposed to go to seek justice for this?
Wiping the blood from the corner of his mouth, he looked coldly at the three people standing before him and asked, "What exactly is your relationship with that man called Long Yi?"
Gu Jiao met his gaze seriously and replied, "He is our friend."
"Friend?" Liao Chen looked over at Little Jing Kong, who was sitting in the carriage chattering away, and at Long Yi, who silently stood guard beside him like a human-shaped listening device. His fingers clenched into fists. "A man like him… does he even deserve to have friends?"
Xiao Heng’s brows furrowed slightly.
Gu Jiao said, "You seem to know Long Yi. And you also seem to know about his past."
Liao Chen’s voice was icy. "Of course, I know him! Even if he turned to ashes, I would still recognize him!"
Xiao Heng stared at him intently and said, "I’ve always been curious about your identity. There’s no way you have no connection to the Xuanyuan Family, yet I searched through their portraits and genealogy and found no trace of you. The Third Princess and Duke An have never heard of anyone named Xuanyuan Zheng. So, who exactly are you?"
Liao Chen let out a cold laugh. "Who I am doesn’t matter. What matters is this—if you want Jing Kong to stay alive, you’d better let me kill him!"
He didn’t say that Xiao Heng or Gu Jiao should do it, because Gu Jiao had made it clear that Long Yi was their friend. He would not force her to make that choice.
He would do it himself!
Xiao Heng cast Liao Chen a sidelong glance and said, "You won’t be able to kill him."
Long Yi had watched him grow up. The bond between them surpassed any worldly connection. There was no way he wouldn’t stand on Long Yi’s side.
And he would never allow anyone to harm Long Yi.
Liao Chen’s peach blossom-shaped eyes were filled with boundless hatred. “I may not be able to kill him tonight, but one day, I will take his life with my own hands!”
Gu Jiao said, “He doesn’t remember the past anymore.”
Liao Chen let out a cold laugh once more. “Oh? That doesn’t surprise me. No wonder a cold-blooded killer has turned into what he is now. But even if he has forgotten, that doesn’t erase the sins he has committed. Tell him to be careful. One day, I will come for his life!”
With those words, he turned around and left without looking back.
Watching the now-empty street corner, Gu Chengfeng patted his chest in confusion. “What’s going on? Jing Kong’s master and Long Yi are mortal enemies?”
Gu Jiao and Xiao Heng both turned in the direction where Liao Chen had disappeared. Gu Jiao said, “It seems he doesn’t intend to tell us about the events of the past.”
Xiao Heng’s expression was grave as he said, “Because that is the most painful memory of his life.”
Gu Jiao let out a questioning hum and tilted her head to look at him. “Do you know something?”
Xiao Heng also looked at her, his gaze gentle. “I just confirmed it now. Before, it was only a guess.”
“Then tell me. I want to hear it.” Gu Jiao tugged on his hand as she spoke.
Xiao Heng glanced at her tenderly and held her hand in return. “Alright.”
Gu Chengfeng: Hello? There’s still someone else here! Can you two stop acting like I’m invisible? Can you at least stop making eyes at each other right in front of me?
The two carriages moved along at a steady pace, with the two of them walking leisurely beside the first carriage. Meanwhile, Gu Chengfeng sat inside the second carriage, rolling his eyes.
Xiao Heng spoke in a soft voice. “The story begins more than thirty years ago with the Xuanyuan Family. At that time, although the Xuanyuan Family was a military aristocracy, they were not nearly as powerful as they would later become.”
Gu Jiao nodded. “I’ve heard about that. The Xuanyuan Family rose to power under Xuanyuan Li’s leadership, and the Black Wind Army was also founded by him.”
Xiao Heng shook his head. “That’s not actually the case.”
“Ah?” Gu Jiao looked at him in surprise.
Xiao Heng chuckled and reached out to ruffle the small tuft of hair on top of her head. “The founder of the Black Wind Army was actually someone else. The strongest person in the Xuanyuan Family was not Xuanyuan Li, but rather the first commander of the Black Wind Army—the so-called Lord of the Shadows of the Xuanyuan Family’s shadow force. He was the true soul of the Xuanyuan Family’s military power.”
Gu Jiao stroked her chin. “The Lord of the Shadows? That sounds really impressive. What kind of character was this person?”
Xiao Heng said, “No one knows exactly what kind of person The Lord of the Shadow was. What is known is that The Lord of the Shadow was also the founder of the Imperial Advisor’s Hall.”
Gu Jiao couldn’t help but recall that faceless portrait. Could it be this person?
If it was this person, then they must have been the third small clay figurine sitting beside Xuanyuan Li and the Imperial Advisor.
She remembered that the Imperial Advisor had once said that person was both a mentor and a friend.
Seeing how intently she was listening, Xiao Heng continued, “The Lord of the Shadows never revealed themselves in the open, but they were the one who compiled the six national texts of Great Yan, they were the founder of the Imperial Advisor’s Hall, they established the Black Wind Army, and left behind countless wealth. The Lord of the Shadows fought alongside Xuanyuan Li in countless battles, but always remained in the shadows. Even when The Lord of the Shadows went to war, they never left a name behind. Because of that, people simply assumed The Lord of the Shadows was just another powerful soldier, never thinking much more of it.”
But in the end, the secret was discovered.
The imperial families of the States of Jin and Liang both attempted to recruit The Lord of the Shadows. And when they failed, they decided to eliminate the other party instead.
And then, one day, The Lord of the Shadows suddenly vanished.
Some speculated that they had died. Others believed they had gone into hiding somewhere.
Gu Jiao asked, “What does this have to do with Liao Chen?”
In her dreams, she had seen fragments of the past, but not the full story. At the very least, she had only seen the ending regarding Liao Chen, not the history behind it.
Xiao Heng hesitated for a moment before saying, “Liao Chen’s father was the second Lord of the Shadows.”
Gu Jiao asked, “That person’s son?”
Xiao Heng shook his head again. “No, that person was not a member of the Xuanyuan Family. But Liao Chen’s father was. However, because The Lord of the Shadows always operated in secret, they could never appear in the open. That was the rule set by the first Lord of the Shadows. Thus, Xuanyuan Li’s younger brother, Xuanyuan Qi, faked his own death and became the second Lord of the Shadows of the Xuanyuan Family. Only the heads of the Xuanyuan Family knew about this shadow force. That’s why neither Duke An, my mother, nor even Xuanyuan Li’s eldest son, Xuanyuan Sheng, had any idea of its existence.”
“Twenty years ago, Xuanyuan Qi took his eight-year-old son, Xuanyuan Zheng, to the State of Zhao in search of a rare medicinal herb. Along the way, Xuanyuan Qi was ambushed by assassins and succumbed to his injuries.”
“Based on Liao Chen’s reaction, the assassin who killed him… was Long Yi.”
However, although Long Yi had killed Xuanyuan Qi, he had paid a heavy price. He lost all of his memories and became half-stupid.

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
