Chapter 3207: People Died for Wealth
People died for wealth, just as birds perished for food. Wasn’t Marquis Xuanping’s household destroyed precisely because of their wealth? It had stirred envy and displeasure in those seated high above.
Ning Shu stared at the ancestral hall, thinking she would have to tear it down sooner or later.
That place was simply too dangerous. Surely the ancestors buried underground would not blame her?
After all, their descendants were in danger now, and the family line could no longer be carried on if they were all dead or ruined.
“Miss, we should leave,” Lianqiao said while rubbing her arm. Even in the height of summer, the place felt cold and eerie.
Ning Shu nodded and turned to leave.
Back in her courtyard, she took out an ornate invitation card, wrote it out, and handed it to Lianqiao. “Deliver this to the Yin family.”
Lianqiao looked at the finely crafted card with an expression full of displeasure. “Miss, why bother keeping in touch with Miss Yin?”
“Just deliver it,” Ning Shu said irritably. “And have someone keep an eye on the Yin household while you’re at it.
“Be careful. The maidservant at Miss Yin’s side is highly skilled in martial arts. Don’t try to win with words and end up suffering for it,” Ning Shu reminded her.Lianqiao muttered an acknowledgment and left to deliver the card. When she returned, her clothes were covered in dust, and she stormed angrily toward Ning Shu, looking utterly wronged.
“Did Hongling, the servant by Yin Qing’s side, beat you up? Was it because of your attitude?” Ning Shu asked without looking up. She was busy with her embroidery.
“It was that Hongling! Without a word, she threw me out of the Yin household. Their family is nothing but petty officials, yet she dared to toss me out as if to slap you, Miss, in the face!” Lianqiao stomped her foot in anger.
Ning Shu set aside her embroidery and poured herself a cup of tea. “Go wash up. Don’t try to play the pitiful one in front of me. Did Miss Yin accept the invitation?”
“Miss, she really did have me thrown out! I felt so humiliated—humiliated on behalf of Marquis Xuanping’s household!” Lianqiao’s face flushed red with frustration at Ning Shu’s calm indifference.
Ning Shu nodded. “You deliberately provoked Hongling. It would’ve been strange if she hadn’t thrown you out. Hongling serves Prince Xin’s heir. Why would she bother to respect a maid from Marquis Xuanping’s household?
“I knew you’d end up getting beaten.”
Lianqiao: …
“Miss, then why did you still make me go? I shouldn’t have gone, I shouldn’t have!” Lianqiao whined in grievance.
“All right, I know you’re upset. Go clean yourself up. By the way, when you were thrown out, what expression did Miss Yin have?”
Lianqiao thought for a moment. “I didn’t notice clearly, but… she did try to stop it.”
Ning Shu fell silent in thought.
“Miss, the Yin family looks down on us! After you went out of your way to send a golden-embossed invitation, this is how they treated us? Miss…”
“That’s enough. You silly girl, go wash up. You’ve had a hard time.”
Lianqiao quickly responded, “If the master is insulted, the servant should die for it. I’m fine, but the one truly insulted was you, Miss.”
Ning Shu set down her teacup. “This was all within my expectations. There’s nothing about insult or shame here. I know what I’m doing.”
Lianqiao said no more and went off to wash up.
Ning Shu stood and stretched her limbs, preparing to take a walk around the courtyard.
While wandering, she spotted the young servant who followed Gu Fanlu. The servant had gone back to the Gu family’s residence to report the matter of his illness to his family there.
Now that he had returned, it could only mean that people from the Gu family had arrived to fetch Gu Fanlu.
After some thought, Ning Shu made her way to the old madame’s courtyard to massage her shoulders.
At the gate, an old nursemaid stopped her and bowed. “Miss, the old madame is entertaining guests right now.”
Ning Shu said nothing more. She simply turned and left. It was most likely people from the Gu family. It was a matter of course that they would come to pay respects to the old madame, who counted as their elder.
