Chapter 3785: Way Longer Talk
Normally, Roan would simply check the guy’s soul directly. Unfortunately, it wouldn’t work on an Umbra, whose soul was different from normal beings.
Naturally, for that Level Three Umbra, that was the best outcome since the other choice was death. "Yes! Yes! Please ask anything, friends."
Rean and Roan, as Rion, started. "First, do you have a name? We noticed the Level One Umbras don’t seem to have names of their own."
"Yes," the Umbra nodded. "You can call me Erxando. As for the reason Level One Umbras don’t have names, that’s because the many memory fragments and emotions that gave birth to them cause this. They need to reach level two so their own sense of identity solidifies, and at that point, they will notice the lack of a name and usually name themselves."
"Good." That was pretty much the same thing as Rean commented back when they met Hura. Rion continued. "Erxando, are all Level Three Umbras able to detect our Umbra’s presence?"
Erxando looked at Rion and the layer of Shadow Energy. In the next moment, Xian detached himself from Rean and Roan, taking his kid form. "I can feel your presence even now."
Erxando nodded and began to explain. "We can. At Level Three, our sensitivity to Shadow Energy increases many times, different from Levels Two and One. That’s why you won’t see any other Level Two Umbra in this place, let alone further ahead. Naturally, I was very curious about why I was feeling a Level One Umbra, which was almost unheard of here."
Xian couldn’t help but ask. "I was also able to sense your presence. Was that supposed to be possible? From what you said, it seemed like someone at my level should never have sensed you."
Exrando rubbed the back of his head in response. "You shouldn’t indeed... It’s just that I was bored, so I made it so you could feel me. I wanted you to flee while I hunted you slowly. Otherwise, you wouldn’t have noticed my approach, just like you said."
Xian quickly looked at the twins. "Sorry, seniors. It seems like I can’t help you anymore. I can’t hide you from Level Three Umbras."
Rion continued with his eyes fixed on the Umbra while answering Xian. "Don’t worry about that now." Then, Rion continued his questions to Erxando. "What about the Living Beings? Were you able to feel our intents and souls while Xian covered us?"
"Xian?" Erxando looked at the leel One Umbra. "You gave yourself a name? Oh, I see! The Living Beings made you notice you lacked a name, right? That’s why you have a name."
Xian confirmed. "Yes."
Erxando continued from there. "Answering your question about sensing you, no. Xian’s Shadow Energy does indeed cover the presence of your soul and intentions. What I felt was the fact that Xian was separated into two parts. When I aimed at the two parts, I just so happened to find you. As you saw, we Umbras can separate our bodies. It’s just that we can’t go too far from each other. Even a Level Three Umbra like me can’t have its several parts more than ten kilometers away. Otherwise, the furthest one simply dies and dissipates. There is one more reason why no Umbra would do that, though."
"Which is?" Rion asked.
"Because separating one’s body into different parts makes each part weaker. Portions of our soul exist inside those parts. So, if one is destroyed, our soul is damaged," Erxando explained with a bitter smile. He gave up fleeing just in time. If a few more portions were destroyed, he would probably lose his own sense of self.
Rion was satisfied with the answer. "You are being more helpful than I expected. Guess I might ask this as well. You were controlling Celestial Laws, but it felt like you were paying a price for it."
The twins couldn’t use Celestial Laws, but they still had their own in their souls. That’s why they could tell more or less what was happening to Erxando.
Erxando didn’t even want to talk about it now. Too bad he couldn’t stay silent, as it would probably mean his death. Even now, his mind was working at full speed, trying to find a silver lining while the wins’ group made more questions. "We do... We lose our comprehension of laws."
That aligned with the twins’ knowledge, and especially Roan’s conjecture. "Sure enough, Level Three Umbras are like Semi-Celestial Experts. He can pull the Celestial Laws from the Celestial World by force, but he loses his own comprehension of laws in the process, just like the Semi-Celestials back in Lisan."
’Well, he had to be like a Semi-Celestial, right?’ Kentucky shrugged while commenting through their connection so Xian and Erxando wouldn’t hear. ’If he truly had the power of a real Celestial Realm expert, I don’t think we would have stood a chance at all. In fact, he is a lot weaker than a normal Semi-Celestial if you compare him to the Semi-Celestials we fought back in Lisan Universe.’
’Indeed,’ Rion agreed with Kentucky.
As much as the twins improved to their past selves, they fought a Semi-Celestial when they had a cultivation of Peak Stage Divinity. Right now, they are still at the Space-Time Realm Late Stage in their Rion form. Their new techniques haven’t made them as strong as they were at the Peak Stage Divinity.
Their strength right now would likely place them somewhere around their past Middle Stage Divinity.
Rion spoke again, saying, "Now he will have to comprehend those laws again."
"He won’t be able to," Xian was the one to speak.
Erxando felt even worse. "Xian is right, I can’t comprehend the laws anymore. The Umbras’ comprehension of laws comes from the memory fragments and emotions that gave birth to us. As I am right now, I definitely wouldn’t be able to use the Major Laws of Fire and Lightning as I did at the start."
Rion and the others were surprised. "So it is an even greater risk for the Umbras, uh? Is there no way to recover?"
"I don’t know," Xian answered. He was never able to use Celestial Laws to start with.
"There is," Erxando knew how, though. "It’s just that all Umbras would do their utmost to avoid it. To recover your comprehension, you need to accept more memory fragments from other Umbras, and obviously, Umbras that use the same laws. But that could possibly cause you to lose yourself. That’s why I haven’t used Celestial Laws at all until I truly felt the threat of being killed. Only at those moments does the price of using the Celestial Laws become acceptable with all its risks."
[Rean, Roan, don’t forget the Rion form costs 10 Celestial Points every ten minutes. The system will charge another 10 points in two minutes.]
Turns out the conversation was taking way longer than the fight, which had lasted slightly less than a minute.
