Chapter 2554: Getting a Job
"What’s with that reaction? Have you never worked before?" Officer Mei asked with her eyebrows raised.
"Even if you tell me to find a job, I don’t know what to do. Any recommendations?" Yuan sighed.
"..."
Officer Mei pondered for a moment before responding, "If you want to increase your credentials as fast as possible, then you will want a job like mine."
"You... want me to become an officer like you?"
"Of course not. You don’t even qualify in the first place," she quickly denied. "However, with my mother’s Endorsement, you should be able to work as an assistant with ease. If you work as my assistant, I can keep an eye on you. As much as I dislike my mother, I don’t want you to destroy her reputation."
"Working as your assistant, huh? Why not? It’s not like I have anything else in mind," Yuan quickly agreed with her idea.
"In that case, let’s head to the station now."
They left the villa shortly after and made their way to the police station that Officer Mei worked at on the surface.
’This Gaia’s Cultivation System is quite ridiculous... It completely cultivates for me, similar to my soul cultivation technique.’
Yuan was beginning to understand how everyone, including children, acquired their high cultivation bases.
And as he gathered more Limitless, his comprehension of it improved as well.
’Limitless... It’s basically Eternal Essence, but altered and weakened to allow even humans to cultivate it. It may not be as powerful as raw Eternal Essence, but it’s definitely stronger than even Celestial Essence.’
Even though Yuan hadn’t even begun to understand Celestial Essence, which is required to reach the Absolute God realm, he could tell that Limitless was far superior.
’Whoever created this Gaia’s System that is capable of all this is definitely at the level of an Eternal, perhaps even a Prime Eternal!’
Upon arriving at the police station, Officer Mei brought Yuan to the front desk and said to the officer behind the desk, "Sign him up to be my assistant."
"What...?"
The officer stared at them in disbelief.
"He has my mother’s Endorsement. You can check if you don’t believe me."
"Y-Your mother’s Endorsement?!" The officer stood up in shock. "Isn’t your mother—"
"I don’t need you to remind me of my mother’s identity," Officer Mei coldly interrupted. "Hurry up and sign him up so we can start working already."
"..."
After a moment of silence, the officer sat back down and started working.
"I have never seen you so eager to work before," the officer remarked as he worked.
"I’m not doing this because I want to," Officer Mei sighed.
A few moments later, the officer looked at Yuan and asked, "Hey... weren’t you the oddball who was arrested by her earlier today?"
Yuan nodded with a smile, "A lot has happened."
"..."
Since Yuan was endorsed by Officer Mei’s mother, the officer decided not to question it anymore.
A few more moments later, the officer handed Yuan a badge and said, "Here you go."
The instant Yuan accepted the badge, a notification appeared before him.
<You have been accepted as an Assistant Officer>
<You have been assigned to work as Officer Mei’s assistant>
’I get the job just like that?’ Yuan thought, a bit dumbfounded.
"Make sure to change out of your weird outfit before you leave this building," said the officer as he glared at Yuan’s robes.
"Follow me," Officer Mei said before guiding him to the men’s locker room.
"Inside, you’ll find some tall machines. Remove your clothes and stand inside."
"Okay."
Yuan entered the locker room shortly afterward, and sure enough, several upright, cylinder-shaped machines stood along the wall.
After removing his clothes, Yuan stepped inside the machine. Without requiring him to do anything, it began scanning him from head to toe.
After the initial scan, the machine paused for several seconds before scanning him again. This time, however, it did more than examine him, and it began creating a suit directly on his body, spraying the material over his skin.
Yuan stepped out of the machine once it was all done.
"This feels... odd," Yuan mumbled as he looked down at the skin-tight suit. It was so light and breathable that it felt as though he were not wearing anything at all.
After leaving the locker room, Yuan asked Officer Mei, "How durable is this suit?"
"Don’t underestimate its durability because of how thin it looks and feels," she remarked. "It is enforced with multiple protective enchantments and can easily withstand attacks from anyone below the Fifth Ascension."
"How many cultivation realms are there?" Yuan then asked.
"There are nine realms in total."
"Nine..." Yuan swallowed nervously at this information.
’If First Ascension is God Ascension, then I can probably assume that Third Ascension is the realm of Absolute God...’
The discovery of Absolute God was already shocking enough. Yet there were six more realms above that in this world.
’Good heavens... just how advanced is the cultivation in this world? I wouldn’t be surprised if the top cultivators of this world can rival even Eternals!’
"Let’s get to work," Officer Mei said, snapping him out of his thoughts.
"How does it work?" he asked as he followed her outside.
"If there are no active threats or issues, we simply patrol the city."
"What about my credentials?"
"It will increase gradually as long as you are on the job, but it rises much faster when you take more active actions. For example, arresting a criminal will earn you far more credentials than simply wandering around a park."
Yuan sighed. "I still do not understand what doing a job has to do with one’s credentials."
"Your credentials are essentially a measure of how much Gaia’s System trusts you. The more you contribute to society without doing anything wrong, the more access you will receive, improving your overall quality of life."
"Faster cultivation. Higher clearance. Better jobs. You name it. This entire world revolves around Gaia’s System."
"With a system like that, I do not see the purpose of police officers. Can’t the system simply punish criminals outright?" Yuan asked.
Officer Mei raised an eyebrow at him before responding, "The system is neither omnipotent nor absolute. Although I do not know exactly how it works, it never acts according to its own interests and likely has rules of its own."
