Reborn One Week Before the Apocalypse

Chapter 228 - 218: Meeting an Acquaintance Again

Chapter 228: Chapter 218: Meeting an Acquaintance Again

The seat next to Mr. Wen Sr. was the seat of honor in the family. It was usually occupied by the two brothers, Wen Jianli and Wen Jianshu. But now, Wen Jianli had given up his seat for Tang Mo.

For an outsider to be given such a position in the Wen Family was enough to show how highly they regarded Tang Mo.

Or rather, how highly they regarded her personal strength and future potential.

At such a young age, she had achieved so much on her own without relying on anyone. She was clearly destined for greatness—anyone with eyes could see that.

Tang Mo glanced back at Wen Jianshu. Seeing his slight nod, she went ahead and sat down.

She gave the people at the dining table a quick scan. Everyone was dressed with unusual formality.

While no one was in evening gowns and sky-high heels, everyone else, man or woman, was in formal wear, aside from Mr. Wen Sr. who wore a Tang suit. Tang Mo’s tracksuit stood out awkwardly.

But Tang Mo couldn’t care less. She was living out an apocalypse-survival script, not one for a drama about wealthy family feuds.

Looking around at those present today, Tang Mo recognized most of them, though there were a few unfamiliar faces from the extended family.

As her gaze swept halfway around the table, it froze for a moment.

Among the crowd, she saw a familiar figure: Wenqing.

Ever since she took Wenqing’s bracelet in the woods, Tang Mo hadn’t seen her again.

She had only heard that Wenqing was later kicked out of An Yang’s team. She had no idea what she’d been up to since.

Tang Mo was quite surprised to see her at a Wen Family gathering today.

’Wenqing... Wenqing. Her surname is also Wen. How had I never considered this before?’

Wenqing saw Tang Mo casually sitting there in her tracksuit. She lowered her head, a ferocious look almost breaking through her submissive expression.

You had to admit, this Wenqing woman was quite something. Her attribute values were poor, and after losing the Space—her greatest asset—and being abandoned by An Yang, she didn’t just give up. Instead, she wracked her brain and figured out another path to survival.

And that was to try her luck with the Wen Family.

Although Wenqing’s surname was Wen, she knew perfectly well that her family had absolutely no connection to the Wen Family of the Alliance.

But now, she’d truly been backed into a corner.

Wenqing had gathered all the information she could and came knocking directly at the Wen Family’s old residence. She claimed her parents had died in the apocalypse and had told her to seek refuge with the Wen Family at S Base.

She naturally knew her story held no credibility, so she "casually" let it slip that she used to have a Space and had used it to save many, many people at her school.

Mr. Wen Sr. of the Wen Family was a most compassionate man. He could see through the young lady’s schemes, but after sending someone to inquire about the school she mentioned, he found that many people at T University had indeed survived thanks to the food from Wenqing’s Space. So, he didn’t mind her little ploys.

It seemed she had nowhere else to go after losing her Space. The Wen Family didn’t lack the means to feed one more person, and in light of her previous good deeds, it was acceptable to take in someone who shared their name.

Of course, Mr. Wen Sr. had other considerations. T University was one of the nation’s top institutions, home to many outstanding talents, some of whom were now working for the Alliance.

They were indebted to Wenqing. Now, by taking Wenqing in, he was essentially making them indebted to the Wen Family. This was a bargain that was far too good to pass up.

As for whether taking Wenqing in was driven more by compassion or by calculation, perhaps only Mr. Wen Sr. himself truly knew.

Wenqing didn’t know that Tang Mo was the one who took her Space Bracelet, but she hadn’t forgotten their past conflicts at school. She now kept her head bowed low, trying to minimize her presence.

Her being able to eat at this table today was the result of a long and arduous effort to win the favor of Mr. Wen Sr. and everyone else in the Wen Family. She could clearly see that Tang Mo’s status was beyond her reach, and she couldn’t let all her hard work be destroyed in an instant.

Tang Mo’s gaze quickly swept past her without comment. In truth, she didn’t really think much of her past grudges with Wenqing.

She had to have that Space Bracelet; it had little to do with her dislike for Wenqing as a person.

Although she looked down on how Wenqing handled things, the girl had, after all, done some good deeds. She hadn’t done anything truly heinous, nor had she significantly infringed on Tang Mo’s interests. Tang Mo couldn’t be bothered to hunt her down and finish her off.

In some respects, a person like Wenqing was very well-suited for this apocalypse.

"Momo, you’re from T University too, right? Then do you and Wenqing know each other?"

Mr. Wen Sr. was introducing Wenqing to Tang Mo. They were of the same age and would have things in common. If they could become close, Tang Mo’s relationship with the Wen Family would be even closer.

"Not really," Tang Mo said bluntly.

Wenqing bit her lip.

"But I’ve certainly heard of Momo’s name. A national scholarship winner every year. The professors were all full of praise for her."

When Wenqing looked up again, she was wearing an ingratiating smile.

Hearing how tactful Wenqing was, Mr. Wen Sr. nodded with satisfaction.

Exquisite dishes were soon brought out one after another, and the attendants beside them began setting the plates.

Wenqing got up, stood behind Mr. Wen Sr., and began to wait on him as he ate, picking out choice pieces for him from all his favorite dishes.

"Grandfather, your blood pressure is high. You should have some more of this celery."

As Wenqing diligently served him on one side, Wen Jianming’s wife, Zhou Ying, was rolling her eyes so hard they nearly popped out of her head.

She used to be the one to curry favor with Mr. Wen Sr. at home. Now, someone who was even more shameless had come along and almost completely replaced her at his side. Of course she was upset.

But Wenqing paid no mind to others. Her thinking was crystal clear.

’I can’t please everyone. In this family, all I have to do is cling tightly to Mr. Wen Sr.’s coattails.’

’Later, I’ll have him arrange a good marriage for me, and then my life will be set!’

Everyone at the table had their own schemes, and for most of them, the meal was tasteless.

But there was one person who was thoroughly enjoying it...

Tang Mo was exhausted today. She had overused her spiritual power, which took a huge toll on her body. Right now, she was doing her best to maintain an elegant posture while devouring everything in sight.

Her posture was elegant, but the amount she ate was enormous.

Mr. Wen Sr. was older and paid more attention to healthy living, so the ingredients and dishes on the table were more refined and light, which suited Tang Mo’s tastes perfectly.

She was enjoying this meal immensely, completely unconcerned with the schemes of those around her.

"Momo, you haven’t come to visit Grandfather in so long. You’re so busy eating you haven’t even talked to anyone. That’s a little rude, don’t you think?"

Wenqing looked at Tang Mo, who was eating as if she hadn’t had a meal in eight hundred years, and felt utterly contemptuous.
