Overpowered Resident Doctor

Chapter 458 - 457: Won’t Help No Time

Chapter 458: Chapter 457: Won’t Help, No Time

It was Sunday again, the day Yan Feifan was scheduled to perform a guest surgery at Jingcheng Bai Ning Hospital.

This time, he was traveling alone.

Yu Suye, who had planned to accompany Yan Feifan to Jingcheng, had been called to the hospital at the last minute by Dr. Qin Ying to perform ankle surgery on a track and field athlete.

Yan Feifan waved goodbye to his sister, who had dropped him off at the airport. After clearing security and entering the departure lounge, he unexpectedly ran into an acquaintance.

Chan Weiwei, the Executive Director of the Dawn Charity Foundation.

"Mr. Yan, I haven’t had the chance to thank you for making the connection. I’m on my way to Jingcheng to meet with Miss Ding Xuan and discuss a partnership."

Chan Weiwei explained, then asked, "Are you going to Jingcheng too, Mr. Yan?"

As they spoke, they discovered they were on the same flight.

"What a coincidence."

Chan Weiwei smiled warmly. "We’ve tried to contact Miss Ding in the past, but we never heard back."

"This time, we got a definite response as soon as we reached out."

"Also, the amount of exposure the Dawn Charity Foundation has gotten in the last few days is more than we’ve received in the entire year since our founding."

"Mr. Yan, you’re truly our benefactor."

Yan Feifan replied politely, "I’m no benefactor."

"With Mr. Deng’s influence and your management, success is only to be expected."

Chan Weiwei brushed a stray lock of hair from her forehead and said with a beaming smile, "You’re being too modest, Mr. Yan."

"To be honest, we’ve organized two other aid campaigns before, but they barely made a splash."

"This is the only one that’s brought us such a pleasant surprise..."

Yan Feifan cut in, his tone a bit cold. "It’s mainly because the twins’ situation was so tragic."

Chan Weiwei sensed his disapproval and let her smile fade. She sighed softly. "I don’t like it either, Mr. Yan."

"But I have a job to do. Mr. Deng has only one requirement for me: to make the foundation a nationally recognized charity as quickly as possible."

She said with a bitter expression, "Given the nature of a charity, the only way I can get attention is by marketing other people’s tragedies."

Yan Feifan could understand her position to some extent.

He was vaguely aware that some entrepreneurs in China had made their fortunes through less-than-honorable means.

Once they reached a certain level of success, they became desperate to build a respectable public image for themselves through charity and other philanthropic activities.

They did this to gain a certain degree of social, and even political, standing, hoping to avoid being held accountable for their past actions one day.

This was also a major reason why some of China’s wealthy were so quick to emigrate.

They knew they couldn’t withstand an investigation from the relevant authorities.

After making a fortune, they would flee the country before their past dealings came to light.

Yan Feifan said quietly, "A good deed is still a good deed, even if there’s an ulterior motive. As long as those who need it receive real help, that’s what matters."

"After all, true saints who do good for its own sake are few and far between."

A smile returned to Chan Weiwei’s face. "Thank you for understanding, Mr. Yan. That’s how I see it, too."

"Regardless of the motive, the goal is to ensure that people in real need get the help they require."

After a brief pause, Chan Weiwei changed the subject. "Mr. Yan, I know that your Extraordinary Fund provides ongoing funding for reconstructive surgery for disabled and disfigured children in orphanages."

"Would you be open to the Dawn Charity Foundation contributing as well?"

Yan Feifan smiled. "I’d welcome it."

"At the rate the Extraordinary Fund is spending now, the money in the account will be gone in less than six months..."

The two discussed the potential partnership for a short while before the boarding announcement came over the speakers.

After boarding, they went their separate ways, as Yan Feifan had a business class ticket while Chan Weiwei was in economy.

They landed at Shoudu Capital International Airport a little after 9:30 AM. Once they exited the terminal, they parted ways and got into their respective cars that were waiting to pick them up.

The car sent to pick up Yan Feifan was the same Cadillac minivan as before, driven by Yu Youhai’s chauffeur.

However, there was another person in the car this time.

It wasn’t Lu Yao, but Zeng Ni.

Zeng Ni, whom Yan Feifan had dubbed the "silver-haired monster," was still dressed in a sexy, summery outfit, but her full head of silver hair had been dyed back to its natural black.

Sitting next to Yan Feifan in the back seat, Zeng Ni flicked her short hair and complained, "I was grounded for over half a month. They only let me out after I dyed my hair back."

"Mr. Yan, don’t you think I looked better with silver hair?"

Yan Feifan looked away and said slowly, "Our complexion, black hair, and black eyes—that is the look of us Chinese people, shaped by genetics and natural selection."

"It’s also what best suits our traditional aesthetic."

"Silver hair is just unconventional; it isn’t necessarily more attractive."

Zeng Ni scoffed. "You’re so young, but you think like my grandparents. So old-fashioned."

"Hey, Mr. Yan..."

She reached out and patted Yan Feifan’s shoulder. "I came here today to apologize to you in person."

"I’m sorry!"

Zeng Ni rushed through the apology, then quickly added, "And thank you for not holding a grudge and agreeing to operate on Yein Xiaomei’s mother."

Yan Feifan turned to look at the scenery blurring past the window. "No need to thank me," he said casually.

"I’m just fulfilling my contract with the Baining Group—three surgeries every two weeks. It doesn’t matter who the patient is."

Zeng Ni said with a serious expression, "It might not be important to you, but it’s extremely important to Yein Xiaomei."

She patted his shoulder again.

"Mr. Yan, how about we partner up on something?"

"Not interested," Yan Feifan replied flatly.

"It’s like this..."

Zeng Ni ignored his refusal and launched into her pitch. "There’s this jewelry store that sells jadeite. All their pieces are top-grade."

"The store is running a promotion to test your eye for quality."

"Of course, it’s targeted at amateurs, not jadeite experts."

"They mix one real piece of jadeite jewelry in with nine nearly identical fakes. For just one-tenth of the real item’s price, you get three chances to pick it out."

Zeng Ni’s voice was full of excitement. "Mr. Yan, you have a photographic memory. We can work together! If you pick out the real piece, I’ll give you a cut equal to one-tenth of its value."

She added, trying to entice him, "And don’t think that one-tenth is a small amount."

"A lot of the jadeite pieces they sell are worth over a million."

"If we just pick out a few pieces, you could make hundreds of thousands, even a million. That’s way more than you make from a day of surgery."

Yan Feifan shot her a sideways glance. "You’ve already tried this a few times and never picked the real one, haven’t you?"

"How did you know?" Zeng Ni asked, surprised.

Yan Feifan said scornfully, "As the saying goes, the seller is always shrewder than the buyer. If they’re running a game like this, you can bet they’re confident you won’t win."

"In my opinion, it’s just a disguised form of gambling. It’s best to stay away from it."

"Just consider it the price of learning a lesson."

Zeng Ni grabbed his arm. "I can’t do that! Mr. Yan, I’ll be honest with you..."

"I wanted to buy my grandmother a jadeite bracelet for her birthday, but I ended up spending all my money and still didn’t get it."

"It was so embarrassing at her birthday party."

"I just can’t let it go."

"Mr. Yan, please, just help me this one time. Okay?"

Yan Feifan rolled his eyes and replied curtly, "No. I don’t have time."
