Chapter 227: Chapter 227: Noah Operating System [3]
Back in the library, Ye Ling walked straight toward the spot where Ning Ruoxi was sitting, with Luo Yue happily tagging along behind him.
"Here’s your milk tea."
Ye Ling handed the milk tea to Ning Ruoxi.
"Thanks, handsome. Mwah~"
Ning Ruoxi happily took the milk tea and planted a quick kiss on Ye Ling’s cheek.
"Wow! Ruoruo, you’ve really changed since you got together with Master!"
Luo Yue’s eyes widened. ’Are they even going to let a single girl like me live? Starting off so strong!’
"Yueyue?"
Hearing the voice, Ning Ruoxi froze for a second. She turned to see Luo Yue, and her face immediately flushed a little. "What are you doing here?"
"We ran into each other at the milk tea shop, so she followed me over."
Ye Ling shot a helpless glance at the tagalong.
He had come to the library to spend time with Ning Ruoxi, hoping for some time alone with her.
But instead, he’d ended up bringing back a third wheel. ’Just my luck.’
Ning Ruoxi, however, was delighted to see Luo Yue. The two girls sat down together and started chattering away.
Of course, since they were in a library, they kept their voices down. As a result, Ye Ling, sitting right beside them, couldn’t hear a single thing they were saying.
And so, Ye Ling felt as if he’d been hit with an Isolation Buff.
’What the hell.’
’I knew I shouldn’t have let that girl Luo Yue tag along!’
Ye Ling sat off to the side, bored. He couldn’t focus on his book anymore. Suddenly remembering the mission he’d just received, he pulled out his phone, intending to contact Zhou Xing.
...
「That afternoon.」
After lunch, Ye Ling arrived at Zhou Xing’s office.
Inside, Zhou Xing was accompanied by several men in suits. They appeared to be in the middle of a discussion.
"Ah, Ye Ling, you’re here. Have a seat. We’re just discussing a few things and should be done shortly," Zhou Xing said upon seeing Ye Ling arrive.
"Okay."
Ye Ling nodded and sat to one side, listening quietly to their conversation.
The men in suits were from the Xia Wei Group. They had come to Modu University to discuss the Noah system, which the company was currently developing, with Zhou Xing.
"Our main problem right now is the ecosystem. While the core of the Noah system is basically complete, we still have a long way to go to build a proper ecosystem around it."
The man in the suit sighed, articulating the biggest problem the Xia Wei Group was currently facing.
.bg-ssp-10081{margin-left:auto;margin-right:auto;display:flex;justify-content:center;}"Both Little Green People and Fruit have already established stable ecosystems."
"They have established user bases, which attract talented developers. Those developers, in turn, attract an even larger user base. It’s a virtuous cycle."
"Why did previous systems like Symbian and others get phased out?"
"The key issue was that hardly anyone even knew those systems existed. Consequently, there was no chance of development teams creating apps to support them."
"And without development teams, there’s no software."
"If it has nothing, what good is the operating system?"
"Yes."
Zhou Xing nodded in agreement.
"But the Xia Wei Group probably doesn’t have enough time to build that ecosystem now, does it?"
Ye Ling, who had been sitting to the side, suddenly spoke up.
Hearing Ye Ling’s comment, the three men from the Xia Wei Group were taken aback for a moment and turned to look at him.
"This is Ye Ling. I’ve mentioned him to you before."
Seeing their expressions, Zhou Xing chuckled and introduced Ye Ling to the group.
"So this is the computer genius you were talking about."
One of the men immediately spoke up, a hint of surprise on his face. "Hello, I’m Lin Xiao, the current head of the Technical Development Department at the Xia Wei Group."
"It’s a pleasure."
Ye Ling nodded at him.
"Ye Ling, if you have any thoughts, feel free to speak your mind," Zhou Xing added.
"I don’t think you should be in a rush to build a system ecosystem right away," Ye Ling said, sharing his idea.
"But without a system ecosystem, the Noah operating system is useless," one of the men behind Lin Xiao immediately interjected with a frown.
"I wasn’t finished."
Ye Ling chuckled and slowly rose to his feet. "My point is, for the operating system the Xia Wei Group is developing, you could consider temporarily using a hybrid of multiple kernels."
"A hybrid?"
Hearing this, both Lin Xiao and Zhou Xing fell silent, deep in thought.
"Since the Noah operating system’s kernel currently lacks a complete ecosystem, why not borrow the ecosystem from the Little Green People kernel for now? Once the Noah system’s own kernel ecosystem is fully established, you can switch it back to a single-kernel OS."
Ye Ling explained his idea.
In fact, ever since he received the system’s mission at noon, he had been thinking about how to help the Xia Wei Group solve its current system problem.
The problem was the incomplete system ecosystem. There were barely any applications that could support the Noah system kernel developed by the Xia Wei Group, so how could one even begin to speak of an ecosystem?
"You mean... a dual-kernel?"
A flash of inspiration seemed to strike Lin Xiao, and he stared at Ye Ling.
Ye Ling’s words had truly given him a great deal of inspiration.
"You could put it that way, but not entirely."
Ye Ling then continued, asking,
"I’m sure you all know that whether it’s the Windows system, the Little Green People system, or the Fruit system, they all have their own limitations, correct?"
Hearing Ye Ling’s question, the group fell into thought.
As high-level experts in the computer science field, they naturally understood the limitations Ye Ling was referring to.
Take the Windows system, for example. Could you say its ecosystem is lacking?
Most computers today run on the Windows system, yet modern phones all use either the Little Green People or Fruit systems.
There are two main reasons for this situation.
The first is hardware. A mobile phone processor can’t handle the Windows system. With current technology, this is still a difficult problem to overcome.
Second, even if future technology breaks through and makes it possible to run, you still couldn’t use it!
After all,
the Windows system is primarily designed for computer users. It’s different from a mobile OS; the commands are not the same.
"My suggestion is that in its early development, the Noah operating system should consider a multi-kernel hybrid. At the same time, the system should adopt a distributed architecture."
"The advantages are obvious. First, it temporarily solves the ecosystem problem, as software compatible with Little Green People can still run on the Noah OS. Second, if the Noah OS adopts a distributed architecture, it might be able to resolve those kinds of limitations in the future."
Ye Ling concluded, laying out his thoughts.
"A multi-kernel hybrid..."
Lin Xiao mused, "Your proposal sounds feasible. However, for multi-kernel development, the source code alone would need to be completely rewritten. It would be like starting from scratch."
"Not quite starting from scratch. After all, a lot of code is referenced directly from open-source libraries, isn’t it?"
Ye Ling said with a small laugh.
"Ye Ling, could you design such a multi-kernel operating system?"
Zhou Xing looked intently at Ye Ling.
’Letting Ye Ling sit in today,’ he thought, ’was truly the wisest decision!’
’This young man has brought me far too many surprises.’
