Roadmap to the Boundless Sky

Book 3 Chapter 376: Test

Book 3, Chapter 376: Test

After Chen Chuan checked up on Dawncall, Zhuang Ke brought him to a scenic area. The screen there showed a simulated version of Dawncall in a fight, which was provided by passive biosentient entities.

Chen Chuan could see Dawncall flying in the sky. After receiving some sort of signal, it locked onto an armed target. Then, it dived down like lightning to tear into its target before swiftly rising into the sky again.

The entire process was quick and smooth. The simulation made Dawncall appear agile and fierce. The mutated tissue involved in the attack was also marked with red light.

“This simulated diagram is provided by the headquarters’ active biosentient entity. It shows the strength your pet will have once it grows up,” Zhuang Ke said

“If you’re willing to, you can implant domain connection entities into your pet. Then, even if you’re in the wilderness, you’ll be able to give orders to it while it’s high up in the sky.

“If you don’t need that, you can communicate with it verbally through some tools, but you'll lack an element of stealth. After getting mutated tissue, your pet’s vision has improved considerably. You could teach it some gestures, movements, or even information cards to communicate with it just like how one could communicate with it through a domain connection entity. If you need it, we can train the pet for you.”

With a wave of his hand, the screen changed to show Chen Chuan some teaching videos. The information cards were colorful cards with their function written clearly on them in order to prevent the owner from forgetting what each card meant. Meanwhile, the pets would remember what each card symbolized through color and carrying out the owner’s requests.

They were just some simple commands, though. The pet wouldn’t be able to understand anything complicated.

Zhuang Ke then continued, “After your pet comes out of the cultivation area, it will need to receive some training. Our company has come up with a set of training methods based on its mutated tissue. You can use it without worry.

“But you need to pay attention to one fact: Generally, the mutated tissue in pets grows in two stages.

“During the first stage, after the mutated tissue takes shape, it enters a growth stage. The pets become bigger because of it, but they don’t grow too much. Let’s take Dawncall as an example. It will grow to its adult size.

“Then comes the second stage. This is where our unique technology comes in. Just like how a martial artist’s mutated tissue grows when they reach a new limit, the pets’ mutated tissue will grow once more. If they reach this stage, they surpass their natural lifespan.”

“How long will that take?” Chen Chuan asked.

“Every creature is different, but we’ve performed a detailed analysis for your pet. If we do things according to the plan we’ve set, it will take around three months to half a year for it to complete the second stage of growth.”

Chen Chuan nodded at that. It wasn’t long, which made sense. Such creatures did not live long. If they didn’t reach a breakthrough quickly, all the effort invested in them would go to waste.

“It’s growing so fast. Will there be any consequences?” Chen Chuan asked after some thinking.

Zhuang Ke smiled at that. “We’re using a recently developed gentle medicine. We’re not draining the pets’ potential.”

It all depended on how much money the clients were willing to put in. As long as they could pay enough, Photon Nest was willing to provide all the necessary resources and technology. Then, nothing would go wrong.

“During the second stage, we control the pets’ growth and size, but if they ever reach the third stage of growth, the mutated tissue stops growing according to our plan. Then, the pets themselves become in charge of guiding their mutated tissue’s growth.

“Few pets are able to reach the third stage, though, because they act according to instinct. At most, they receive some training from their owners, which is not enough to make them wish to surpass their limits. It requires the pet to make adjustments and control the growth of its mutated tissue by itself, and that’s difficult.”

“Has there been any precedent of pets reaching the third stage?” Chen Chuan asked.

“There’s quite a number of them, but most of them only reached that stage because of coincidence.

“According to the data we’ve gathered, it often happens in the Sarmanj Continent Guild because they put a lot of resources into modifying living beings. Wars also break out frequently there, which leads to some individual creatures outperforming their peers.

“Your pet is really smart, Lead Investigator Chen. Perhaps it can cross that threshold,” Zhuang Ke offered.

Those were just polite words. In reality, if Dawncall reached the third stage, Photon Nest might turn things around and pay Chen Chuan to monitor and research Dawncall. Any animal who could reach the third stage would provide data that could help the company reach its next stage of development.

In this day and age, the entire world was being driven forward by great pressure. All living beings were searching for breakthroughs, and so did the companies. They were looking for them in terms of technology.

Chen Chuan knew that it would be no easy feat to reach the third stage. It should be the same as for martial artists. Without a complete system supporting them, they would have to rely on their talent and luck to get stronger.

But as long as Dawncall could live past its original lifespan, Chen Chuan already considered it a win. He wouldn’t ask for much else. “We’ll just have to wait and see.”

After checking up on Dawncall, Zhuang Ke escorted Chen Chuan out of Photon Nest. Then, he just stood outside the company with a smile and watched him get into the limousine.

Chen Chuan gave Zhuang Ke a nod too before saying to the driver, “Send me back to Martial Valor University.”

The armored motorcade headed toward the university.

As Chen Chuan watched the passing scenery, he thought about the fact that Dawncall would be able to leave after a few days. He could bring it with him when he went back to Yangzhi City. Three months was a decent amount of time, so it would be better for Chen Chuan to keep it by himself.

The moment he got back into his room, he logged onto the university’s platform and submitted his application for a teaching license. Then, he went to his training room.

In just half an hour, he received a message that his application had been reviewed and accepted. He was now to pick a time for his test.

“So soon?”

Chen Chuan was quite surprised. He wasn’t expecting to get a reply after just submitting his application, but after some thought, he figured that it was due to his current status.

He checked the available slots for the test. Starting from tomorrow, he could take his test from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. every day in the upcoming ten days.

Chen Chuan set his test at noon the next day. Then, he returned to his training.

***

After Chen Chuan finished his morning training, he rested for a while, took a few tubes of nutritional paste, waited until it was almost time, changed his clothes, and left his room to head to the test venue on the seventy-fifth floor.

When he arrived, he saw a few people already waiting there. One of them surprised him. The moment he saw him, he smiled and greeted him. “Hello, Lead Investigator Chen.”

“Mr. Ling, hello. Are you in charge of the test?” Chen Chuan asked.

“Not me. While I want to test your strength, we have rules here, and I can only send someone more suitable forward,” Ling Jianxing said.

He motioned at a lean man with a sharp chin. He was in his thirties. “This is Mr. Yang. He will be the one to test you.”

“Hello, Lead Investigator Chen. I’m Yang Jianying, and I will be in charge of your test,” the man said.

“Hello, Mr. Yang,” Chen Chuan responded politely.

Yang Jianying nodded with a smile. Even though he was the examiner, he felt quite nervous, since he could clearly sense the difference in strength between them.

Before coming, he had read up on Chen Chuan, and many of his fights shocked him, especially the one slash he used to cut through the Ferris wheel. Chen Chuan truly lived up to the strength of a Resolution Department squad captain. He was definitely a martial artist who had learned the Heartborn Force.

Honestly, it was up in the air who exactly was the examinee here. How could he test someone like Chen Chuan? But the university had assigned him to be the examiner, so he had no choice but to go.

From Yang Jianying’s aura, Chen Chuan could tell that he was a regular Third Limit martial artist. He was at Wei Wusheng’s level, before he merged the firm and yielding forces together.

He was pretty strong, but Yang Jianying wouldn’t be able to figure out Chen Chuan’s strength if it was a regular test. This wasn’t because Chen Chuan looked down on him, but because their strength was worlds apart. Yang Jianying was no threat to him. Even if Chen Chuan stood still and just let Yang Jianying hit him, the examiner would be unable to do any damage to him.

Ling Jianxing was here, though, so Chen Chuan had a feeling that this test wasn’t going to be simple.

“Lead Investigator Chen, you won’t be fighting in this test, but don’t let your guard down,” Ling Jianxing said before turning to the empty space ahead of him. “Hongfu, show them the contents of the test.”

“Alright,” Hongfu said.

Neither Chen Chuan nor Yang Jianying knew the contents of the test. A moment later, Hongfu’s voice entered their ears.

Yang Jianying felt a flicker of surprise. He cast a glance at Ling Jianxing. This test was basically tailor made to draw out his strength. If that were the case, he could try to be a proper examiner.

He turned to Chen Chuan and said much more confidently, “Do you have any objections to the test? If not, shall we start?”

Chen Chuan’s expression didn’t change much after he learned about the test. He just nodded. “I have no problems, Mr. Yang.”

“Alright. Hongfu, please change the test venue,” Yang Jianying said.

In an instant, everything around them changed. The scenery turned to that of a dense forest, and the light dimmed, blocked by the leaves, while the ground was covered in a loose layer of humus. Only the chirping of birds and insects could be heard occasionally.

Yang Jianying vanished from sight.
