Chapter 222: Chapter 222: 100% an Inside Job
Hearing this, WorryFree’s husband looked at her skeptically. "Don’t tell me you’ve been scammed!"
"No way!" WorryFree glared at him. "You don’t know anything, so don’t talk nonsense!"
Her husband, his brow furrowed in doubt, said, "I’m telling you, don’t just go around sending gifts to people!"
"Get lost!" WorryFree waved her hand in irritation. "Even if I do send gifts, it’s with my own money. I don’t need you nagging me about it."
[What’s going on with this couple?]
[I don’t know what’s going on, but I love what she’s saying. It’s not like she’s spending his money, so why is he being so controlling!]
[Are they just dating or are they married? If they’re not married, she needs to run.]
WorryFree took her phone and moved to a different spot. Glancing at the live comments, she explained, "Can’t run. We’ve been married for over six months."
She looked at Renee Jennings and greeted her with a smile. "Hi, streamer. My name is Vance. I don’t have any pets myself, but we’re at my husband’s hometown right now, and they have a little black dog here."
Renee Jennings smiled faintly. "Hello, Vance. Is there something you’d like my help with?"
"Yes." WorryFree nodded, a troubled look creeping into her eyes. "To be honest, I just couldn’t let it go and wanted to give this a shot. I never expected to actually get connected with over a hundred thousand people watching."
Hearing this, Renee Jennings said softly, "Why don’t you start by telling me what’s troubling you."
WorryFree sighed. "Sigh... Remember how I said I’ve been married for over six months? Well, for the wedding, my in-laws gave us five gold pieces, and my dowry included four gold pieces, making nine in total."
She paused, then sighed again. "My husband and I rent an apartment in the city, and we were worried it wouldn’t be safe to keep all that gold with us, so we left it at my in-laws’ house."
"And then?" Renee Jennings asked, though she could already guess what was coming.
WorryFree said, heartbroken, "My husband and I took a few days off to come back to his hometown. Last night, on a whim, I decided I wanted to take a look at the gold jewelry, but... it was all gone! I regret it so much now. If I’d known this would happen, I would have taken it all with us!"
[Huh? It’s all gone?]
[Oh my god, that’s just awful.]
[Nine gold pieces... altogether, that must be worth hundreds of thousands, right?]
Seeing the comment, WorryFree nodded heavily. "The pieces from my in-laws were worth about a hundred thousand, and even though my dowry was only four pieces, they were bracelets and necklaces, so they were worth another hundred thousand or so."
"Why not call the police?" Renee Jennings asked.
WorryFree’s brow tightened as she said miserably, "I wanted to, but we have no idea when the gold went missing. It’s been sitting in the house for over six months, and there are no security cameras out here in the countryside. It would be incredibly difficult to investigate."
[This kind of situation is definitely hard to deal with.]
[It was probably an inside job.]
[I think it was someone they know, too. How would an outsider know they had that much gold in the house?]
WorryFree glanced over her shoulder and lowered her voice. "Actually, my own parents suspected the same thing. But this is my in-laws’ house, so it’s not really my place to say things like that. The more I thought about it last night, the worse I felt, so I mentioned it to my husband this morning. He had a huge reaction, accusing me of suspecting his parents."
"Then we started arguing, and we were still fighting right up until I connected to your stream."
[All that gold is missing, and your husband isn’t the least bit worried?]
[Wait, your in-laws live there. How could a thief get in without them noticing?]
WorryFree explained, "My in-laws live on the first floor, while my husband and I are on the second. They don’t usually come upstairs unless there’s a reason."
Renee Jennings noticed the security bars on the window behind her and said calmly, "Are there any problems with the security bars on your second-floor windows?"
"I don’t think so." WorryFree got up and did a quick check. "They’re all fine. No problems."
Renee Jennings asked again, "Do you have a third floor?"
WorryFree shook her head. "No, it’s just a two-story house."
Renee Jennings stated, "Then for a thief to get to the second floor, they would have had to come in through the front door on the first floor."
"Exactly!" A thought struck WorryFree, and she frowned. "If they came in through the first floor, how could my in-laws possibly not have noticed?"
[It’s 100% an inside job!]
[Let me throw out a conspiracy theory: maybe your in-laws took the gold..."]
[If it wasn’t the in-laws, it was another relative.]
WorryFree saw these comments, her feelings a complicated mess.
Truthfully, she had only suspected it was an inside job; the thought that her in-laws could be involved had never crossed her mind.
A clear, pleasant voice interrupted her thoughts. "Vance, didn’t you say your in-laws have a little black dog? If a thief had gotten in, it should have barked."
"Right!" WorryFree’s eyes lit up, and she said excitedly, "Streamer, can you ask it for me? Ask if it saw anyone go up to the second floor to steal something."
Renee Jennings nodded. "Okay."
[What if your in-laws did steal it? Will you get a divorce?]
[I bet your husband will expect you to forgive his parents.]
WorryFree put on her headphones. "Honestly, I don’t know. I just hope it has nothing to do with them."
With that, she hurried downstairs.
Her husband was in the first-floor living room, drinking tea and chatting with his parents.
When WorryFree saw this, she seethed with anger.
’Over two hundred thousand worth of gold is missing, and he’s not the least bit worried. He’s actually in the mood to sit here drinking tea and chatting!’
’That bastard!’
She cursed inwardly.
Seeing her come downstairs, her in-laws smiled and invited her to sit down for tea.
"No, thank you." WorryFree’s tone was cold. "I’m going outside to play with the dog."
Her in-laws stared at her back, their faces clouded with displeasure.
"Listen to what your wife just said!"
"We ask her to have tea with us, and she says she’s going to play with the dog?"
WorryFree’s husband tried to smooth things over. "She’s just in a bad mood because of all the missing gold. Please try to understand."
WorryFree went out into the yard and saw the little black dog lying on the ground, looking bored.
She flipped her phone’s camera to face the dog and cautiously approached it. "Shadow, let’s talk."
To be honest, she was a little afraid of dogs.
Hearing the movement, the little black dog stood up. It stared at her with bright, curious eyes, wagging its tail furiously. "Aren’t you scared of me anymore?"
WorryFree instinctively took two steps back.
The little black dog whimpered pitifully and lay back down on the ground.
"Vance, are you afraid of dogs?" Renee Jennings asked.
WorryFree replied, "Yes, a little."
Renee Jennings chuckled. "Don’t be afraid. Shadow won’t hurt you. He knows you’re scared of him. When you approached him just now, he thought you weren’t afraid anymore. When he saw you back away, he lay back down."
"Really?" WorryFree looked at the little black dog, hesitated for a moment, then tried approaching it again. "Shadow..."
The little black dog looked up at her again and barked. "I don’t bite people, so don’t be scared."
Renee Jennings translated, "He says he doesn’t bite and that you shouldn’t be afraid."
Hearing this, WorryFree pressed her lips together and tentatively reached out her hand toward him.
Seeing this, the little black dog stretched out its neck, offering its head to her.
WorryFree’s fingers were stiff as she gave his head a quick pat before snatching her hand back.
The little black dog seemed to grin at her, its tongue lolling out. "Heh heh, see? I really don’t bite!"
