Rotting Land: Survive

Chapter 151: Midnight Memories (Part 1)

The sky gradually darkened, a bright full moon quietly climbed into the sky. After enduring a whole day of scorching sun, the steaming earth finally returned to its former coolness.

In the night, a black silhouette was swiftly moving through the factory area, heading towards the warehouse where the survivors were located.

"Snore~ Snore!" The snoring was thunderous, the survivors inside the warehouse slept deeply, with each nasal inhale and exhale orchestrating a "symphony of fate" that was truly full of ups and downs, deeply moving.

At this moment, a slight sound of a lock opening suddenly echoed outside the house. The sound itself wasn't loud, certainly incomparable to the symphony inside the house, but even so, the deeply groggy Zhao Yunhai still alertly snapped his eyes open, his round pupils in the dark warehouse emitting an eerie ghostly glow.

Instinctively reaching towards his side, this was a habit Zhao Yunhai developed while he was trapped alone in a building.

At that time, he lived every day in extreme fear and tension, without the help of others, he had to remain vigilant and alert around the clock, to prevent any possible dangers and calamities from occurring.

As expected, Zhao Yunhai found nothing after groping around; he only touched a row of stacked cardboard boxes and nothing else.

Then, the door of the warehouse was gently pushed open from the outside, the cool night breeze rushed in, instantly freshening the previously turbid air inside the room.

Zhao Yunhai suddenly bounced up from the cardboard box bed, clutching his fists tightly to his chest like a startled bird, instinctively calling out questioning, "Who!?"

A slight pause, as if startled by Zhao Yunhai's reaction, the foot that had just stepped in beneath the shadow retracted upon hearing his question: "It's, it's me!"

"Ah!" With the moonlight shining on the newcomer, Zhao Yunhai could vaguely make out the figure, and immediately shouted with uncertainty: "You are... Lin! Lin Guan?"

"What? Uncle Zhao! What are you buzzing about!" A lazy reprimand came from inside, clearly Zhao Yunhai's series of reactive responses had disturbed his companions.

"Um~ everyone, I'm really sorry, I didn't know you were resting, oh~ right," As he spoke, Lin Guan placed a pot he was carrying onto the cardboard box beside him, then continued: "Dinner from the kitchen is ready, I figured you all might be hungry, so I hurried over, how about you all eat while it's hot?"

"Hey! Lin Guan, look I just..." Zhao Yunhai scratched his head awkwardly, ashamed of his earlier panic and outburst.

However, Lin Guan didn't mind, he waved it off with a smile, then opened the pot lid, took out bowls and chopsticks from a plastic bag, and neatly placed them one by one: "Everyone, please understand, our supplies here are scarce, so there's nothing good to entertain everyone with. Let's just have some porridge to fill our bellies for now."

At this point, the survivors who had been asleep gradually woke up. Tang Xiaoquan tidied his slightly messy hair, stretched comfortably after getting up, and dragged his sluggish self to sit beside Lin Guan.

"Haha, Lin Guan, you are too kind, having a hot meal in these times is already a blessing!"

Waving his hand, he quickly urged everyone to take the meal; after all, Lin Guan graciously brought it over after cooking tirelessly, it would be rude to ignore it.

Each person took a bowl, and as Lin Guan said, the quality of the dinner was indeed a bit "meager". At least to Tang Xiaoquan, it seemed even stingier compared to the "cuisine" he had before.

The supplies here seem worse than I expected! After sipping some hot water, Tang Xiaoquan couldn't help but lament internally.

"Um~ I was busy with some tasks at noon, so I didn't have time to introduce myself to you all, I'm Lin, Lin Junfu. I used to be a traffic police officer. After the chaos broke out, I came here. Just like I mentioned before, our supplies are indeed a bit tight, but security, overall, is still manageable!"

Nodding instinctively, the survivors exchanged glances, then took turns reporting their names, considering that as a self-introduction.

Upon finishing introductions, Tang Xiaoquan casually asked, "Lin Guan, how did you end up here?"

"Well... it's a long story!" Perhaps something difficult to talk about, Lin Junfu slightly shook his head and fell silent.

Seeing that he wasn't going to continue the topic, Tang Xiaoquan didn't press further and instead asked another question, "Lin Guan, on the walkie-talkie you told us to leave the highway quickly, saying it was dangerous. To be honest, afterward, we encountered groups of zombies. There's just one thing I find strange, because when we first arrived, we checked thoroughly, and there wasn't a single zombie on the road. They seemed to disappear into thin air. Do you know why? Or have you ever encountered a similar situation?"

As those words fell, the warehouse fell into a deathly silence.

After a while, a faint flicker of candlelight rose under Lin Junfu's hands.

"Sigh~" Another long sigh, under the candlelight, Lin Junfu pulled out a pack of cigarettes from his bag, only to find it empty after opening.

Helplessly, he threw it outside, and almost as soon as he looked back, a pair of rough big hands reached out to him.

"Try this!" Zhao Yunhai offered his "Red Wanhua" towards Lin Junfu, who, not being shy, took one with a word of thanks, then lit it up using the flickering candle flame.

Everyone knows smoking is bad, but why do so many people chase after it eagerly? The reason is that it can somewhat ease people's anxiety and distress.

Taking a few energetic puffs, it wasn't long before swirling smoke enveloped Lin Junfu's worn face, making it look dreamy and surreal.

He sat quietly for a few seconds, his gaze gradually becoming distant, a common expression when reminiscing about the past.

Seeing his expression, the survivors tactfully sat quietly, even their eating motions slowed down.

For over a minute, Lin Junfu's right hand holding the cigarette finally began to slow down.

Then...
