Rotting Land: Survive

Chapter 135: The "Monster" Blocking the Road

Heading north all the way, the car moved very slowly. Due to frequent car accidents and abandoned vehicles on the road, Du Jiancheng had no choice but to keep the car's speed maintained at around 30 mph. This was to ensure that in case of emergencies, his poor driving skills would have enough time to react. This tortoise-like pace of moving forward only improved after they were far from the urban areas.

The scenery outside the car passed by like a revolving lantern. They did not change because of the speed alteration. If there was any difference to note, it was only that the buildings were shorter; there were more towering trees; the modern atmosphere was weaker; and the air was fresher, brushing against their faces.

After traveling some distance further, the survivors' field of vision gradually dimmed. The large overlapping branches of red camphor trees lining the road seemed like a parade of dutiful soldiers, guarding this section of the road and blocking the scorching sunlight outside, leaving only a few mottled light spots and rare coolness.

Feeling the cool breeze from outside, a strand of calmness rose in Tang Xiaoquan's heart.

So many days had passed, and perhaps it was only at this moment that his heart was the calmest and most peaceful.

No wonder people often say, when you're tired; weary; lost, pick up your backpack and take a walk. Only when you break away from the city's clamor can you truly feel the charm of nature.

Unfortunately, this charm didn't last long and was soon ruthlessly stripped away by the scorching sun.

About another ten minutes passed when everyone could clearly feel the speeding Buick GL8 slowing down again. As they focused their gaze, a toll station marked with "Welcome to HF City" gradually came into view not far ahead.

Undoubtedly, passing this toll station implied that the survivor team was about to officially embark on a new journey.

And for each member of the team, it also meant they were about to bid farewell to this city where they had lived, learned, and worked for many years.

People are emotional creatures after all, even for outsiders like Wang Qiang and Tang Xiaoquan, there remained a shred of emotion they found hard to part with at this moment in their hearts.

After all, this city taught them too much and helped them find partners worthy of entrusting their lives to.

However, now, compelled by survival pressures and the invasion of foreign entities, they had no choice but to leave, a cruel reality that was truly saddening.

The speed of the car's journey became even slower. Through the car's surrounding glass, the survivors could see many vehicles piled up in rear-end collisions; ground littered with shattered glass; scattered roots of shoes; and various items and equipment scattered on the ground. Just seeing it from afar was enough to make one's hair stand on end.

What a tragic scene it was, those survivors who had similar experiences could imagine the fear and helplessness in people's hearts when the crisis erupted here.

Zombies still wandered aimlessly. Unless the large patches of dry footprints at their feet evidenced their former 'grand masterpieces,' you might genuinely mistake them for tourists here enjoying a 'sunbath.'

Indifferently closing his eyes, Tang Xiaoquan couldn't bear to continue looking and thought only of leaving.

A-Cheng chose a path with comparatively better road conditions to slowly drive through. In the past, paying the toll was something every driver passing here needed to do.

However, today... it seemed unnecessary.

Because a black Range Rover "Evoque" stood firmly lodged in the original toll booth's position. Its fierce body had even pierced through and destroyed the kiosk.

As for the toll collector who should have been performing duties with a smile... the bloodstains splattered on the Range Rover Evoque's front windshield told the whole story.

With the roadblock bar in front of the toll lane knocked over, A-Cheng managed to drive out without much effort. He then took a small auxiliary road for another ten meters or so and decisively stepped on the gas pedal, causing the Buick GL8 to speed up instantly.

The feeling of speed was exhilarating, the wind blowing directly through Tang Xiaoquan's clothes, causing them to flap wildly. His fringe danced wildly in the wind.

Undoubtedly, in this near 100 km/h sprint, the disturbances of zombies were gone, the terrifying roars were gone, and the survivors finally had a broad sense of safety.

So not long after, the crowded car was filled with the sound of snoring.

A-Cheng remained focused on driving, his tightly gripping hands not daring to leave the steering wheel.

This was his first highway trip, and the tension mixed with the excitement of novelty made his spirits exceptionally high.

The outside temperature was already over 40 degrees, and in an environment without tall buildings or trees to provide shade, the eight-person-loaded Buick GL8 quickly became a sealed iron can.

Sweat poured down like a waterfall. To save fuel, A-Cheng didn't turn on the air conditioning, leading the evaporated and dried sweat marks to inevitably stick to his eyes, blurring his vision.

The car had been steadily speeding on the highway for nearly an hour. Besides occasionally seeing abandoned cars, A-Cheng saw nothing else.

He instinctively raised his hand to wipe the sweat between his brows, and suddenly, at the moment his hand passed by his eyes, he vaguely saw something lying across the road through the gap between his fingers.

Once he leaned forward to look closely, A-Cheng gasped in surprise.

"Screech~" His right foot stomped down hard, the screeching caused by emergency braking abruptly came to a stop after a series of shrieks.

The huge inertia from stopping the car caused all the sleeping survivors inside to be thrown back and forth, tumbling over one another.

If it weren't for Hu Xiaodong's foresight of fastening the seat belt properly, the co-driver might have ended up with a swollen nose, bleeding profusely.

"Damn it! What the hell is this! A-Cheng, you..." Halfway through his rant, Wang Qiang was stunned, his hand previously scratching his head now hovering frozen in mid-air.

Not only him, but the rest of the survivors also showed terrified expressions, mouths wide open unable to close.

It was a semi-trailer truck overturned on the road, and the massive body blocked half of the road.

Behind it, dozens of small cars 'entangled' together, perfectly blocking the other half of the road.

Undoubtedly, given the current situation, charging through was clearly impractical. Although the Buick GL8 was heavy, it wasn't a tank, so...

Tang Xiaoquan opened the car door!
