"Boss, this is a Daoist robe!" Old Zhou's eyes sparkled with a mysterious air.
"Aren't Daoist robes a common sight?" Su Xuan asked. "Aside from being a potential antique, is there anything else special about this one?"
"Yes!" Old Zhou nodded. "This robe was taken from a pile of corpses," he said slowly. "For all we know, the owner of this robe killed all those people whose bodies haven't decomposed. That shows you how formidable he must have been! This robe is likely no ordinary item. It might have even developed a spirit of its own, continuing to suppress those bodies for its master long after he died!"
After a pause, Old Zhou continued, "Plus, look at it—not a single sign of decay. Give it a wipe, and it gleams brightly. It must be made from extraordinary materials, worth a fortune!"
"The way you put it, I'm actually tempted," Su Xuan said. He shook the Daoist robe clean and held it up against his body. It was a pretty good fit.
"Boss, if you put on this robe and pair it with your divine rod, you'll look majestic and otherworldly!" With a look of utmost sincerity, Old Zhou laid on the flattery.
WEE-WOO. WEE-WOO.
Just then, the wail of police sirens echoed from outside the funeral home. In the blink of an eye, several officers rushed in.
"Uh..." The officer in the lead saw Su Xuan, and her beautiful eyes widened in surprise.
Su Xuan's eyes widened as well.
"Su Xuan!" The leader of the group was none other than the beautiful police officer, Long Xiwen. She looked Su Xuan up and down. "Didn't I just warn you not to run around? You're still a person of interest in the Bai Family case, so what are you doing here? Why is it that wherever there's trouble, you show up?"
"And another thing!" Long Xiwen's gaze fell on his clothes. "What in the world are you wearing?"
It had all happened so suddenly that Su Xuan was still wearing the Daoist robe Old Zhou coveted, and he was holding an iron rod. He did indeed look quite majestic and otherworldly... or perhaps just unhinged.
Su Xuan shrugged. "This funeral home is my property. It seems something foul has appeared here, so can't I come over in the middle of the night to exorcise some demons?"
"This funeral home is your property?" Long Xiwen's beautiful eyes widened again. Just how many businesses does Su Xuan own! She had investigated Su Xuan before but had no idea he owned a funeral home, let alone one that was part of a chain with hundreds of branches nationwide, valued at tens of billions!
"Yes, yes," Zhang Shan quickly chimed in to corroborate Su Xuan's story. "Boss Su just acquired full ownership."
"Why did you buy this?" Long Xiwen frowned at Su Xuan. Su Xuan owned hotels, private hospitals, and high-end restaurants... all of which made sense. But why would he buy a funeral home? Is he too rich? Just buying something unusual? Preparing for his own funeral?
Then, Su Xuan said something that made her want to tear her hair out. "I wasn't even planning to buy it. I was in a daze, and the next thing I knew, it was mine. I'm helpless, you know!"
"Alright!" Long Xiwen rubbed her forehead and sighed. "You just bought it, correct?"
Su Xuan nodded. "Yes, just bought it. Today is my first time here!"
Long Xiwen turned to Zhang Shan. "Is what he's saying true?"
Zhang Shan nodded frantically. "Yes, yes it is."
"Alright, then. This whole incident has nothing to do with him." Long Xiwen waved a hand, and two officers stepped forward, snapping a pair of silver bracelets on Zhang Shan's wrists.
"You're under suspicion for involvement in a case concerning the destruction of cultural relics. You're coming with us!"
Zhang Shan was then escorted away by the two officers.
Su Xuan pursed his lips. "Why did Old Zhang have to burn those things? Retribution came swiftly."
Old Zhou chimed in, "Yes, he got what he deserved."
Long Xiwen looked at Su Xuan. "You knew he was burning things?"
Su Xuan said, "When I was exorcising demons earlier, I made such a ruckus that he got scared and confessed everything. I was just about to call you to come and arrest him!"
"Who would believe that!" Long Xiwen shot Su Xuan a look. "Besides, who uses an iron rod to exorcise demons!"
"Believe it or not. If there's nothing else, I'm out of here!" Su Xuan picked up his iron rod and walked toward the exit, still wearing the Daoist robe.
Watching his retreating back, Long Xiwen called out, "You really weren't involved in destroying the cultural relics at Chongming Park, were you?"
Without turning his head, Su Xuan replied, "Old Zhang said they only dug up a bunch of weird corpses. Why would I want to mess with those? It's not like they're pretty girls like you."
"You!" Long Xiwen stamped her foot, and the magnificent scenery on her chest undulated spectacularly.
Once outside the funeral home, Su Xuan ripped the Daoist robe off his body, rolled it up haphazardly, and tossed it into his car. In doing so, he exposed his shoulder, where the woman in red had torn his shirt.
If Long Xiwen were to ask how his clothes got torn, he wouldn't have a good explanation. He didn't want to tell anyone what had happened at the funeral home for two reasons. First, nobody would believe him. Second, if word got out, his funeral home could no longer serve the public. After all, who would dare to come?
"Boss, is your funeral home perhaps in need of a general manager?" As Su Xuan got into his car to leave, Old Zhou held the door, his face creased in a wide smile. "I'm quite experienced in this line of work. Do you think I might be a good fit..."
"We'll see." Su Xuan shut the car door and sped off.
Staring at the departing taillights, Old Zhou shouted, "I'm really good, I swear! Please give it some serious thought!"
「After getting home」
Su Xuan filled a basin with water, submerged the Daoist robe, and poured in a bottle of laundry detergent. He then took a long, hot shower himself.
As he bathed, he thought back on the events at the funeral home. In hindsight, he felt a lingering fear. Thankfully, the woman in red had been there to handle the situation, allowing him to escape what could have been a disaster.
And what was behind that door? Why didn't the woman in red let him see? Yet it seemed she herself knew. And the wound on my shoulder... it was healed by two wisps of white qi. The woman in red called it 'incense qi' and told me to earn more. Do I earn it by helping ghosts?
I don't know...
A sudden wave of curiosity washed over Su Xuan. He picked up his razor and made a shallow cut on the back of his hand, then stared intently at the wound.
Immediately, faint white qi began to emanate from the cut, and the wound healed at a rate visible to the naked eye.
"Amazing!" Amazement filled Su Xuan's eyes, yet he felt a twinge of dissatisfaction. This white qi was far fainter than the dense qi at the funeral home.
This incense qi is a consumable! I really need to earn more of it! The benefits are undeniable!
Su Xuan made up his mind. From now on, he would have to find more opportunities to earn incense qi.
After leaving the bathroom, he changed into a dry pair of pajamas and squatted down in front of the iron rod that was leaning against the headboard, studying it closely. Some of the rust had flaked off, revealing peculiar patterns underneath. As he stared at the patterns, his mind seemed to enter a strange resonance with them...
